Installing a solid mount short throw shifter on our E46 track car. (2002 BMW 325i)

- On this episode we'll be upgrading the shifting in our track car by installing a short throw shifter. These cars are notorious for having a lot of play from wear and tear in the shifter over time so installing a solid mount will attach our shifter directly to the transmission tunnel. We'll walk you through the steps so you too can make the upgrade and save yourself a little headache down the road.

Well Hey howdy Doody and spank my Barber Phil! This is EXACTLY what I needed to see guys! THANK YOU! I gotta say great job on showing this job. I just bought me the exact shifter and was wondering a few things your video answered.
Glad we were able to help you out. That's what it's all about!
Nice work.

Made it look easy! This would probably be an all day ordeal for me.
It really wasn't that bad
I got the same shifter to install, now im 30 min deep into doing it and stuck on the flipclip part that he made it look like 15 seconds😂
I'm on day 2

solid Y'all
Thanks buddy finally got your old front tires mounted on my opal rear rims perfect fit
Your dad in the background towards the end. 😂
I’ve been trying to get the “flip clip” off for the past 4 hours
Yeah they can be a pain in the butt sometimes
@@InspirationNation thanks man it’s been sitting on stands for 4 months now, still can’t get it off. Heading to the scrapper next week
NOICE!
Did you reuse the white plastic piece that holds the stock shifter in or do you take it completely out? Can’t find any video showing that detail
Take it out
do you need solid engine and trans mounts? i saw another install video saying you need one or something may bend or break
As long as you have good solid motor mounts, you should be fine. We've had zero problems with 500+ miles on the track since install.
how long is it
Might be a bit late to the party for a reply 😂 but is there a way to not make the shifter sit so close to front of the dash? Looks like neutral is where the 3rd usually is with normal shifter
We don't have the issue. It sits in the factory location
You have to make sure the ring flange that bolts it to the trans tunnel is centered. If it's too far back, it will pull the shifter close to the dash. If it's too far forward, it will bring it back to you
Habe anyone a link on Amazon?
yk the lil clip yall said not to lose, what is the name of that clip. I managed to lose it in the heat shield like yall said
We just call it a flip clip, not sure if there's a more technical term.
if you make te screw below more longher, will be more shorter?
Yes
do u had any problem shifting to reverse or 2nd gear?
No it shifts very smoothly.
Does making the knob shorter increase throw or decrease?
I mean in theory yeah but it actually feels really comfortable and I haven't missed shifted with it yet and we've logged over 500 miles at the track with it
by any chance have another link? The current link in the description is no longer available
Sorry we're getting to this so late but it's any of the cheap eBay solid mount short throw shifters
Hey sorry about that. New eBay link to the shifter is up in video description 👍
Did you still use the chassismount from the oem shifter or only the shift link??
We only use the shift linkage you do not use the OEM Mount anymore.
Thanks man👍🏻 need to know for my Rx8 with m54 swap😂
@@maxvos5522 An RX8 with an M54? You gotta upload some videos dude, that's cool as hell
can the knob be changed to an oem style one?
yes
Dose anyone know where I can get that C clamp he used at 3:50
If you're talking about the little clip for the bottom of the shifter you can find it here.

How long did it take you guys to install?
Start to finish around 3 hours.
Hey bud the eBay link dosent exist anymore should you happen to know the brand name?
Hey sorry about that. New eBay link to the shifter is up in video description 👍
I know this is an old video, but I just did this with the identical shifter, followed all steps and my shifter is EXTREMELY floppy. Did I miss something?
get a dssr. around 100$
@@Luckless_Mediaany recommendations?
@@rrichiie garageistic, ecs tuning, HRBerformance. they all do the same things and are built fairly similar
Hey the part you linked is not avalible anymore can you give another link or exact name of the part?

The knob is universal we just went with a generic red shift knob
ebay link doesn’t work anymore .. name brand of the shifter ?
assuming you found something by now but i’d recommend cliqtuning
any way to fix play in the gears just got mine in but its wiggly in gear
We have a little bit of play in the gears as well after the swap. If it's real bad then it could be an internal transmission problem. Otherwise shouldn't be an issue. We've taken it to VIR since (new video coming out tomorrow) and it performed flawlessly.
Why it won't engage reverse?
Dssr can help (dual sheer selector rod) it’s the piece that connects the shifter to the transmission I believe at bottom of shifter
I just installed my shifter and the side to side play is really bad. I haven't been able to drive the car yet, but I have a feeling ill be money shifting it. I might try to make a gate like Lamborghini's have, but underneath the shifter.
@@dickfitzwelliner2807 It's the old worn out bushes in the linkages and a few other bits. Big job though, i'm not putting that much effort into a cheap car.
Is this relatively the same for a bmw z3 ?
I believe it's the same shifter but I'm not 100% sure
@@B-ray88888 yes it does fit 😂
@@jacobbmacias5437 😂 well I'm glad it worked out for you buddy
do i reallyneed to pull out the shift linkage? Can skip that part or is it really that tight?
You can't skip it unfortunately, it's part of the install process.
do you need to upgrade motor and trans mount for this?
No it's pretty straight forward. It would probably help but we didn't and it has performed well.
@@InspirationNation Thanks for the fast reply, this is going in a daily, would you still recommend?
Yes 100% because the OEM shift setup naturally has a lot of play, where with the short throw shifter it really stiffens all of that up for a more solid shifting experience.
This made me so happy I don’t own a BMW
Shift pattern location has moved forward and to the right. This side effect should be acknowledged. Not to be a Karen, but people should know what to expect.
