Becoming a Thru Hiker - Arizona Trail ep.1

- čas přidán 6. 06. 2021
- I set out to walk across Arizona, 800 miles through the heat, desert, cactus, burning sun, with all sorts of fun creatures to contend with, only carrying a small backpack of supplies. The trail begins at the Mexico border and travels all the way up to Utah, going up and over some of the biggest mountains in the state. Mt Lemmon, Mica, the San Francisco Peaks, traversing down into the Grand Canyon, and back up the other side on the Kaibab Trail. It's been more than a year since I did a long distance thru hike like this, since walking 1,100 miles on the Florida trail in the winter of 2020. I hope my body holds up, I hope I don't develop any hiking injuries. I hope the sun and heat isn't so bad, though I am starting much later in the season than most other AZT thru hikers. At least I won't have much snow to walk through. Water however will be a major problem in the desert.
I have an ultralight pack, nearly super ultralight. Carrying 7lbs worth of backpacking gear, a lot of which is camera equipment to film these hikes. I feel this UL gear is enough to keep me comfortable, happy, and safe... but you really don't know how things will work until you're out in the wilderness with no safe exit plan. Some of the gear I'm using consists of an Enlightened Equipment Enigma 30*F which is an ultralight quilt. An EE Torrid Pullover synthetic jacket. A Zpacks 7x9 tarp as my only shelter. A small Palantepacks UL backpack. And a Sunday Afternoon Sunhat. Beyond that you can check out my hiking gear listed below!!
In this first part of the trail we start at Coronado National Memorial at the Mexico Border, hike up to Miller Peak, go through the town of Patagonia, hike past Mt Wrightson, see a lot of big cactus, deal with dehydration and extreme heat, and still push 30 or more miles everyday. Fastpacking maybe, but certainly not a speed record or Fastest Known Time. Just hiking the way I like to hike. Oh yeah, I also get stung by a scorpion! It's been great out here walking across Arizona!
During this trip I unfortunately broke the fancy new camera lens I had bought to better document this hike and those I take in the future. For those interested I have made paintings to help replace it! All of these are original, and it all goes back to making these videos better. Thanks for checking out my artwork!

For those of us that want to contribute, but can't afford one of your amazing paintings, where/how could we do that?

Nice half a second pause in the intro after "left me" was a good one lmao
Silence can say more than words.
"My girlfriend has just left me... by the trailhead." I hate it when they dump you while you are in the middle of no where and just drive off.
In this instance I was very thankful that she dropped me in the middle of nowhere hah
I love the cool calm philosophy that drives you. It shows it’s beauty in every touch you make. Music choice, image calibration, views, walking beat, endurance... Basically you make everything nice. It’s soothing to the soul... thank you...😊
🔥❤️🔥
Hi Darwin.
Oh this is bringing back so many memories: my first thru hike was the AZT and I turned 61 the day after the 100 mile mark, which was my first 20 mile day. You are doing such a good job filming and have an agreeable yet interesting voice. Can’t wait to see the next episode! The wildlife in AZ is so different from other places I’ve lived. I hope you get to see them, especially the squirrels with the tufted ears💓
What other thru hikes have you done?!
@@oldtobyii7740 Black Forest trail in PA twice and I’m chipping away at the CDT in Montana/Idaho. 440 miles done and that much to go. Will test the waters on an overnight this weekend between Chief Joseph Pass and Big Hole Pass. Maybe I should say test the knees!
@@vannemocilac274 Awesome stuff! Happy trails to you (and your knees)!
Ur crazy too
Ah dude this was so good such a nice flow to it all and the cuts and transitions are so on point. I’d definitely say this is your best work to date. The trail looks absolutely stunning as well, love all the flora you captured, really gives a sense of it being a unique environment. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got for us next time ✌️ Ben.
Thanks Ben! The trail really lends itself to being photographed in a way. I like when I don't have to think too hard about it and things just kinda fall into place. Story or scenery wise
Exactly what I was thinking! Good job Jupiter
Loose-fitting light-colored shirt, broad-brim light-colored sun hat-- great to see a hiker who knows how to dress in the hot sun.
Agreed! I see so many road cycling videos where some goofballs wear black in the summer desert and wonder why they nearly die. Mad dogs and Englishmen...
@@ericpmoss Or women who rock the sports bra and tiny shorts. Like, it’s sexy but your skin’s getting scorched.
@@ericpmossI’m English so it’s in my DNA 😂
This channel is my happy place thank you
Speaking as a Yorkshire man, my first reaction to that heat would be: "K'in 'ell it's 'ot! Were's t'pub!?"
Then I'd go for a hike... to the next pub!
Great video, epic scenery- trying to hide my jealousy;)
thanks for the details (like the yellow bag)
Yes!!!!!…..A Jupiter thru hike to follow again🥾🥾🥾🥾😎😎😎😎
💛 the paintings!!
You are so mellow. "I put my hand down on a rock and a Scorpion stung me". Hope you're over it and there's no more unpleasant surprises.
Beautiful work! Arizona is a beautiful beautiful state. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. 🙂
Great series. 2nd time watching
Thank you! It's one of my favorite series I've done, glad you enjoy it too
Beautiful video!!! Had me laughing from the start!! That pause after “left me” and the advice on the hogs-OMG too funny! Florida Trail and hogs, gators, snakes, along with all our other critters, all your other trail critters on all your other hikes, cowboy camping-pretty sure you’re experienced....and then you just casually mention at the end about the scorpion...🦂😬🤦♀️🤷♀️. Hope it feels better! Amazing camera work! Loving it! Safe hiking!!!
Man, the way you captured the beauty of the "golden hour" there was done so well. Love it.
Thank you! It was for sure the best time of day to be out hiking given the heat, but also the way the sun illuminated everything it was quite beautiful each morning and evening
@@JupiterHikes as a fellow photographer I chase light too and really appreciated your artistry. Keep 'em comin' please & happy hiking!
Dude you always have the best music. Love it. Thank you.
This was so good, the music and scenery really mixed well. Jupiter the scorpion king! Stay safe out there man.
You are such a fast hiker🤩. I'm sorry you got stung by a scorpion 🦂!
Love your videos! I find them inspiring and very relaxing as well. Thank you :-)
Another great video of another great journey! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Great video! Excited to see the rest of it.
Awesome video man. Enjoyed watching! I can’t wait to see the rest of this series.
So sick! I'm so appreciative of all your effort to hike and share with us. Awesome videos!
So happy to see these videos coming out! You are one of my favourite CZcamsrs.
Good work Jupiter! Really liked this.
Beautiful job Jupiter! thx so much
Great way to see and experience the desert. No doubt about it!
I just love your vibe, great content, and down to earth attitude!
You're inspiring Jupiter! Thanks for helping me leave vicariously through your hikes.
Great to see you again so inspirational, really good video capturing the scenery. Greetings from Scandinavia 👍🏻
Great view♥️
Great video Jupiter! Of course the scenery is stunning but the way you captured it was phenomenal! Keep on keeping on! Can’t wait for the next one.
Great video. !! Love the music also 🔥🔥🔥
Loved it Jupiter!
Well done. (As always) Love the artwork too.
Yess! Nice intro and really great episode, epic scenenary!
Love your videos: great photography and music, laid back commentary, learning from your hiking style.
I really enjoyed watching this video. You captured the start of the trail fantastic. I really enjoyed your editing and the awesome transitions as well. 😀
Great video, I love Arizona and hopefully someday in my near future I too want to hike the AZT. Looking forward to following your journey.
Your video editing is top notch, and those views were absolutely spectacular! 🔥 Well done
I really like the way this video is edited, nice to see how you're improving your production over time :)
I love hiking Arizona - lived there for many years. I've hiked many places there, including the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim. Thanks for sharing this experience.
Great vid! Thanks.
Thanks for the great first episode, love the music/sound editing you chose. It looks like you got to see a few ocotillo in bloom, hopefully you were able to see more cacti blooms, they look otherworldly in the glow of the desert evening.
I love your storytelling, thank you for sharing your journey!
Thanks for watching!
Thank for the video and sharing your thru hike. Definitely looking forward to the next episode. Well done on the vid and really like the music and scenery. You have a calming voice that brings everything together and makes for a pleasant viewing experience.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed it. I'll keep them coming, and keep in mind the chillness of this one when composing more
I have been waiting on this for so long. I am so pumped. Thanks Jupiter
You and me both! Been a process but really wanted to do the AZT right
Nice to see you out on the trail again. Really beautiful video work. The sunsets are spectacular! Thanks for sharing the hike with us.
Glad you enjoyed it
I like Jupiter's style. Style is everything. Rock on, bro.
Great video!
Montezuma Pass and Parker Canyon Lake are my old stomping grounds from when I was a teen. I did a lot of volunteer trail maintenance and some cave tours in the Park. Fun video and thanks for sharing!
Yo Jupiter! It was a pleasure to meet you on trail (around Pine). Great footage and story for this first AZT episode, I’m definitely looking forward to more. Its awesome to get to re-live the experience again but through your lens.
Great filming and edit!!! Love it!!! Good to see you back on trail!!!😀❤ Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching! More to come soon
Good work mate....will be in Arizona in November so might have a look at the trail...cheers
Congratulations on passing the 100 mile marker. Your a trooper for getting through a Scorpion bite. I did the same thing on the Art Loeb trail, NC . I put my hand on a true and was stung by a bee. I completely on the beer thing and having an ice cold drink is important in the heat. Keep up the hard work.
Can't wait to watch after work!!
Beautiful video, Jupiter! Like your style!!
Glad you enjoy it!
Thank you. That was almost like being back on a trail again.
Lot of open spaces. I never followed anybody on a Thur hike in the AZT. Interested in seeing what it looks like. Congrats on your 100 miles👍👍
Thanks for the video,,,I seen those cactus with the red. Bloom in Tucson about 2 weeks ago,,,,,, it was my first time in Arizona
beautiful video! cant wait to see more
Thank you! More to come, working hard at it now
I've a problem. I think I like all your vids...
You make it look so easy!
Like muscle memory after so long! Not easy but my body knows what to do. Still so many lessons along the way. Some I have to relearn every time
Great video! Seems like a great trail!
It is an awesome trail!
I think the quality is fine! it's about your story man, it's a good one...and you're technique is worth the watch!
Awesome! Thank you!
Much respect doing those survivor man shots and having to go back to get the camera.
Just hikes Passage 34 in Flagstaff! So beautiful, the meadows alongside the mountain in the San Francisco’s section are gorgeous!
One of my favorite parts!! Loved seeing the aspen, all the pine forests, and more mild weather of course
Fantastic editing dude
Yay! I’ve been waiting for this. Those PUDs always suck. So. Much. Ocotillo.
Be careful and safe @jupiterhikes ✅ 👍🏽
Good to see you out there! I just sat down to check out the fire situation for OR PCT because I just planned out the northern 150 miles. Last year I had to hop off the trail because of my son's health problems and I want to finish it up. I can't help wonder if thru-hiking the PCT will become a thing of the past because of the fires. You are an inspiration to me. Stay true to you and have fun!
I think because it has been designated as this "elite" accomplishment to tackle the triple crown, people may never be truly deterred. In time maybe folks will start their hikes earlier and earlier though, and things will be ever more uncertain. Really though who knows! I hope it is always there
I'll take a look, love your artwork - I had forgotten about all the fences and cattle guards... I thought I saw your shirts on Garage Grown Gear or somewhere as well. The water is....lovely....
I had designed a shirt for both Enlightened Equipment and Garage Grown Gear. Though I still have my own on my website as well!
Hey Jupiter. The miles your making is making the pace of the video enjoyable. If that makes sense. 👍👍✌️
He hikes like he is trying to get away from his own shadow!
Sometimes I am chasing my shadow! Though I never catch it
Looks very hot and dry there. Wow, I feel for ya
We already know you got this man. Lol. Sorry about your lens. AZ has a beauty all it's own. I climbed Bell Rock in Sedona years ago. It was epic 😎 🙌
I love your videos. That's all.
Nice to see Jupiter back in his natural habitat 👍🏻 And the AZT! OmG 🙌 He went north in the Spring - perhaps he'll head south in the Fall? I want ALL THE AZT CONTENT
I can't believe people drink beer and then hike!!😳 I'd be done for the day 🥴
Man that scorpion incident is enough for me to say I’d def bring one of my Borah or Yama bivy’s to jump into at night .. wouldn’t get any sleep if I didn’t.. lol. Grt video as always looking forward to all the rest of the episodes
meh, scorpions are not anything to worry about. they are fairly harmless unless you sit there and mess with them and agrivate them. they offer no danger in just regular circumstances.
I enjoyed that, thank you! I look forward to future installments. I think you have a really nice aesthetic sense for videography. As a Tucsonan it's fun to see your traverse through familiar landscapes. I should do some hiking on the AZT, I usually stick to local trails.
Around tuscon there were a lot of really awesome places! I loved the Rincon mountains, Saguaro NP, Mt Lemmon of course. I think the next video will highlight a lot more areas close to home for you :)
@@JupiterHikes I look forward to it! Yes, those are really great areas. I used to rock climb--did it for 10 years--mostly on Mt. Lemmon but other places southeast of Tucson as well. During the summer months we would drive to towards the top of the mountain, then in the winter months climb at the base of the mountain. I live near Saguaro West so I don't often drive across town to the Rincon district, but when I have, I really enjoy its beauty.
Cool vid man
That looks like a special hike. And all by yourself. Although I am not a hiker, I would love to experience it. Arizona seems to be quite beautiful and rough. Sorry about your new camara.
I am so proud to be on the support team , thank you , may your camera lens see clear and often.
Thank you Phil!!! The paintings will ship out in the next couple days. Can't tell you how much I appreciate it, and hope you enjoy
@@JupiterHikes Miss out on painting from San Jacinto, not this time from The Arizona Trail . San Jacinto painting available count me in.
Into the thick of it!
Nice.
Thanks for closing the gates behind you. I don’t especially enjoy cow pies on my trail, but the ranchers have a right to be there too, and wandering cattle are a headache for them.
Sure are a lot of ranchers! Given the hikers rely on them currently for so much water I wouldn't want to anger them. Sharing the space as best we can
great vid man :) keep it up
Appreciate it!
Really beautiful, man! Beautiful photography, great commentary. Some of the skies made me want to cry, lol, (I NEED to find a way to make more miles so that I can do some of these trails)! Watched the latest Q&A w/Darwin (loved) and not that you asked, but a shoe recommendation for really wide feet (mine!) are topo's. Not sure if you've tried, but the MTN Racers from last year are amazeballs (imo). Thanks for getting my mind off of everyday life ish and out on the trail! Happy hiking!
Thank you for the shoe recommendation! Always looking to try something new in the hunt for the perfect one.
@@JupiterHikes Good Luck! 😊
Awesome jupe. I wonder if it’s common to hike 6-10am, pause for heat, then go again 6-10pm. Two a days, like football practice before school starts in August.
When did you start? I was in Arizona working s few weeks ago and it got pretty hot late in the afternoon.
When did you start your hike?
I'm going to start my thru hike next week.
Have to pack a little more since it will be a little colder.
Drinking a PBR is closer to water than you might think
Question, no trekking poles to take the weight off your legs and propel you a bit faster?
I recommend them to everyone as the science for sure backs the use of them, but after a decade of not using them it's been hard to get into and I just kind of like not having them, despite the advantages they pose. I like my hands free, and I like carrying one less thing, though I still think everyone should use them
Great video. What time of year did you do this, would you do it the same time of year again? Im planning on doing this myself. Thnks.
Jupiter: “So, my girlfriend has just left me..
Me: See ya! I’ve got a hike to…
Jupiter: ..at the trailhead.”
(Doh!)
What date did you start? Great video work - thanks!
