Chopping Harley Sportster Ironhead Chopper Fender And Making Sissy Bar Fender Strut From Raw Steel

  • Yes, I'm still waiting on parts for the 76 Ironhead Sportster Chopper project; namely for the heads to come back from the shop. While still waiting, I decided to take a stab customizing one of the fenders that I had lying around by chopping it with the cutting wheel.
One of the things I was also in need of for the rear fender scenario was a sissy bar fender strut to suspend the fender from the tire. For the front side of the fender, I had at one time purchased a weld on rear fender mounting kit from Low Brow Customs, but decided to go a different route from using the weld on kit to using a couple of knucklehead/panhead style rear fender mounts that I found on ebay.
In this video, you'll some wrenching, drilling, and cutting. But I must make a disclaimer. When cutting with a cutting wheel on an angle grinder, or grinding with a grinding rock... Don't be stupid like I was in this video!!

If that XLH is a 1973, doublecheck whem re assembling that oil return holes and bolt pattern varies between early '73 and late '73-'74. Head gaskets won't interchange. Also you probably know to fit your intake manifold before tightening headbolts so you can get as close a fit as possible by moving the heads slightly. You are doing ok.....

I know this is an older video but I've gone back to the very beginning and have been going through to present-day watching all the episodes I missed since I started following you last year and I know you're a humble guy but you did an excellent job on the fabrication (especially for not doing any welding)! I really appreciate all your videos and really appreciate the underlying tone and the positive message they portray! God Bless you brother and thanks for all you do to contribute to the motorcycling community! It may not seem like it but you do make a positive difference in many peoples' lives and thank you for that! I hope that I can aspire to be like that as well someday soon (I recently created a similar type of channel about motovlog and vintage bike repair but more so focused around metric bikes and still trying to kick-start it and get it off the ground hopefully in the near future). Do you have any recommendations or wisdom for someone starting off with a new channel; or things you've learned and wished you had done differently? Thank you again for all you do brother, it is very much appreciated!

I notice you have the dunlop harley 402 rear tire on your bike. It's a great tire, but the dunlop harley 401 rear tire has 12/32 tread depth vs 9/32 tread on the 402 tire. It definitely lasts longer. The 401 does have a slightly lower weight rating than the 402 but that's not a problem for my fxr.

That scoot is really taking shape. I see one thing that doesnt fit already. The twilight. I think you need something custom there. The old harley taillight is wrecking the look. Maybe you should Bob the fender and put a light under the lip. Other than that your looking good. By the way I love that alligator tail seat your fixings to install.
