I am 40 weeks and 2 days pregnant, but my doctor says I can't be induced. Why?

- In the days to weeks leading up to delivery, your body is doing some prep work. Your body starts to release prostaglandins, or hormones, that act on your cervix and actually ripen it. That is the medical term we use, just like a fruit is ripe. So this means that your cervix starts to soften, it moves forward in your pelvis, and it begins to thin out. And then at some point, your brain will start to release oxytocin, which is a hormone that acts on your uterus and tells you to contract. Now these contractions, once they get intense and frequent enough, will act on cervix and it will begin to dilate. Usually this prep work, like I said, happens in the days to weeks leading up to delivery, and most first-time moms deliver between 39 1/2 and 40 1/2 weeks, but for an unfortunate few, they get to 41 weeks and they still haven't delivered. And of course, the problem is that their body hasn't done any of this prep work.
If you get to 41 weeks, then you have to be induced, and here's the reason why: placentas have expiration dates on them, but they're just not stamped anywhere we can see them, which means that they will eventually stop feeding your baby like they should. This can lead to a deprivation in oxygen and cause problems for your baby. Studies have shown that nothing good happens after 41 weeks - there is no benefit to you still being pregnant. So we induce you and get your baby out. Of course, most moms are up for this, because they're sick and tired of being pregnant. The induction process can be long and hard in these circumstances, because we have to do what your body should have been doing in the days to weeks leading up to delivery. We just try to squish it into a day or two. So we bring you into the hospital, and we give you medications to ripen your cervix and to mimic what would naturally happen. And then after this ripening process, we give you pitocin, or it's also known as oxytocin, and this causes your uterus to contract, which makes you dilate, and puts you into labor, and helps you have your baby.
Now you mentioned that you're 40 weeks and 2 days, and your doctor says that they can't induce you yet. And that's probably because, until you get to 41 weeks, it's not medically indicated. And we don't usually just induce first-time moms for fun, because your body is stubborn. So in most instances, we wait until it's medically indicated, which is at 41 weeks. Now if you have more specific questions about your circumstances, your OB provider will be able to give you the best information, because they know the most about you. And seeing that delivery will probably be at least in the next few days for you, I want to congratulate you ahead of time, and I hope that everything goes well for you. If you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.
If a baby is full term a mother should be able to CHOOSE when they should be induced.
i hate how they choose for u between 41 to 42 weeks as of 40 weeks isnt full term. There should be nothing wrong with inducing you at 40 weeks as if a mother isnt already miserable waiting till a due date as it is.
Yet they let women kill babies at 39 weeks just because they feel like it.
Amber Delivered no woman has an abortion this late “just because they want to”
@@juliaarnold1078 you have no facts to say you know these women at all. We can't speak things we are unsure of with no facts. It just makes us look emotional or ignorant.
I fucking agree. 40 weeks, 5 days, miserable, painful, sick...
Thankfully I have a doctor that believes going past 40 weeks is pointless. The nurses said that the placenta starts to deteriorate after 40 weeks. I am 38 right now so we shall see..
These damn doctors need to listen to their patients! I told my doctor to induce me and she said I can wait. Had I not listen to myself and walked around to the emergency right after that doctor told me no, my baby would have been a still birth bc they said I was actually have contractions and my baby heart rate was going down and I had to have an emergency C-Section that same day. I was 1 week over due. I would have sued the mess out of that doctor and pressed for her license to get taken away or at least not able to practice in America any longer.
Omg, r u and the baby ok????
My doctor said I won’t go past 41 weeks. We’re gonna schedule my induction at 40 weeks and 2 days. I elected to do it, realize that you have that choice mommies.
Delivered my baby at 40 1/7 weeks via emergency cs because of the result of my ultrasound - Oligohydramnios and 4 nuchal cord coils on my baby's neck... My o.b. and I wasn't aware of this. I dont have any follow up check ups because ill just wait till my labor starts.. but i felt anxious..i so worried that i dont feel any contractions until my due date which is april 18.. save by my instincts that i visited my o.b. to check my progress and requested an ultrasound if my baby's still okay.. thank God that my instincts were true.. mother instincts that my baby is not okay. I have close cervix.. no progress.. thankful that my baby didn't die because of those cords in his neck... Super thankful to my doctors and specially to God! ❤️❤️❤️
Same in my situation now. It’s my 40weeks today but still no sign for labor. So my doctor said I need to admit in the hospital to do induce labor. I hope and pray that me and my baby is will be ok by Monday.
Sarah Jane shimakami did u deliver ur baby?
Did you deliver it ?

Thank god my doctor is going to induce me when i get 40 weeks i told her i dont want to go to 41 or 42 weeks pregnant she said no girl were not going to torture you lol that melted my lil heart iam now 38w&3d and 1 cm dilated first baby👣👶🏽ive been walking and doing squats to try to induce labor naturally but hes so stubborn i think he's not gonna come any time soon

I'm 40 weeks and 2 days pregnant my baby is still not entirely engaged in my pelvis I believe I'm -2 from what I saw in a chart where the head should be. My Dr already scheduled an appointment at the hospital for an induction. Either Friday or Saturday. I'm kind of nervous since i could end up with a c-section, but I would say as long as he is a healthy baby at this point I don't even care if is not natural. Lol
How did it go? Hopefully all is good for you and your little one
how did it go???
I am 40+2 days today 😢 no sign for labor yaa allah I’m tired stress and ready to give birth pray for me
I’ve been induced 2 times at 38 weeks for no real reason and now I’m older and wiser having my last child I’m 40+2 weeks and nothing is happening I’m having the bloody mucus and contractions on and off but the last time was checked I was 1cm.
The only thing is due dates can be off so you could be more like 39 weeks instead of 41 and that's why the body hasn't gone into labor.
i was literally just looking at the calendar to see if i could pin point a time frame when i became pregnant. I’m going to be 40 weeks pregnant on my next doc appointment and i’m so nervous he’ll try to convince me to either do a membrane sweep or schedule an induction, he’s a good doc i’m happy with his care but i don’t want any type of interference 😬
@@danielat1420 How did everything go!? Congratulations on your new bundle of Joy!
This is exactly what I was thinking about. Even though they say I am 40 weeks 2 days but I believe I am actually 39 weeks 2 days instead. My body is still doing some preparation... I don't feel any bad contractions at all yet.
I'm 40W and 2 days and I feel like I'm being strangled. I can't even lay down because I feel like I can't breathe and food is coming back up😩 what's going on with me?
Same 😢 I feel youu!! And I am sure we both had/have other symptoms on top of those just testing my patience skills at this point.

I'm 40w1d going to ask my doctor to be induced today. They usually don't induce until 42w😢 my son came at 41w so I'm hoping they induce today.
Jazmin M :( I feel your pain
how was your induction? labor?
I am due today and my obgyn scheduled me for induction starting tomorrow night then hopefully delivery the next day, but everyone else is saying I should have my baby naturally unless I get to a week or two late so now I’m having doubt. But no one is really saying why I should wait
How did everything go!? With future pregnancies don't let no one tell you to wait. You will risk having your baby infected with it's own bowl movement and possibly still birth because they poor little heart can be in destress with no room to move around any longer.
I'm 40 weeks and 3 days today, I'm so nervous, scared. Going to see my gyna today. I really don't want to be induced at all. I wonder what he's going to say. So God help me
Ugh 🤦🏻♀️ I need this baby out I’m 40 weeks and one day I just can’t no more my hips hurt my legs are swollen and I’m 208lbs I want to be induce and not have to wait until 41 weeks that’s too much ☹️😫
i feel you i’m in the same boat except i don’t want any interference i just want my baby to come already 😭
@@danielat1420 i went over 3 days late like around midnight I stared to get the contractions bad .. but Im glad she was born also the hips kept on hurting for almost 2 months .. and back pains too
That’s exactly how it happened to me like you 😅 my legs were shaking because of the contraction were so strong and it happened exactly at midnight my baby girl was born at 1:59am March 2021 … congratulations to you and your new baby ..
When you go into labour after induction it does cause more labour pain because it causes the labour to progress faster compared to a natural labour. I'm not mentioning this to scare any women here but at least know the reality to be better prepared for pain management.
That is true
Hi frnds my delivery date 14-6-2019, but my baby is not engaged plz gives suggestion for normal delivery
I'm 39 weeks and my Dr won't induce me won't even talk about it but baby is measuring bigger then 39 weeks it's sucks and I've very upset with my Dr
I have no signs of labour yet...i am taking pineapple as well , another Dr said your bone size is good enough you can wait
This my third pregnancy, i didn't go through this with my first and second. My doctor did mention that it is a risky situation keeping the baby till 41 or 42 weeks pregnancy. It had to be only emergency reason or struggling hours with dilating 3cm or 4cm to be induce before my due date. My doctor wants me to have the possibility to have my baby naturally. Now I am 40 weeks and in 4 days my induction is set. God's well be done, blessings to all mothers.

I was induced at 41 for 3 days. Did not work. Ended up with Keizer at 41 weeks 3 days . I think waiting to 41 weeks for induction is not malpractice. In canada they wait till 42.
I’m getting induced at 39 weeks because of baby’s size in order to avoid C-Section
Lucky u
Why do Americans WANT to be induced all the time? Is this a cultural thing? Really just curious, I don't mean to sound judgemental.
Oh and the time at which doctors feel a baby HAS to be induced is different in other countries. I had babies on day 13 after pregnancy and my placenta WAS STILL HEALTHY.
Doctor worship
You are gorgeous 😍
Am 40 weeks and 2 days my doctor wanted to induce me but I refused, am giving my baby another week if she doesn’t show up then I will go back to the hospital
I really don’t understand this ‘waiting game’. If the pregnancy gets to due date but no baby yet why women can’t choose when to be induced? The baby is fully grown and pregnancy is overdue so why wait for something bad to happen? 🤦♀️
i think doctors just wants your body to do it on its own because naturally will always be better but like u say woman should always have an option to choose
For real. The baby is ready to go. Give that mom some relief!
I’m a mom and I would hope my body would do it’s thing which is natural for Womens body to do. It will come out - trust me.
@@VanessaSamparras it doesn’t always happen naturally. I had to be induced at 41+1. They were about to send me home but luckily one of the Doctor did an ultrasound on me and we saw that my amniotic fluid was way too low so they had to induce me the next day to get the baby out.
I think women should have a choice after they reached the full term and the due day! That's my personal opinion!
@@MC-ih1ic choice is the key word. Some doctors just want to get in and out and over it.
I had a scheduled C-section my first child because she “scared” me into thinking I could go into labor at 39 weeks while my baby was head up.
I changed doctors after that.
I watched that documentary “the business of being born” and was eye opening
I am 40 weeks still paining every night and is very concerned, paining but no baby

I’m 40 weeks pregnant & this is my third baby-girl I talked to my midwife about inducing me she said not until your 41 weeks or 42 weeks but she said baby’s head is down your pelvic area I’m like either way she’s already full term so what’s the difference between 40 & 41 weeks been having sharpness pain like my water trying to break having cramping but nothing too serious other then my back 🥺
I’m the same way! Exactly 40 weeks pregnant today and have been at 1cm since 38 weeks, baby is head down but my doctor said he is still high up. Did you go into labor naturally or were you induced? I’ve also been getting sharp pains & back pains, period like cramps but no baby yet :(
@@jasminesandoval7345 i went to my appointment at 40 weeks & 5 days & I told them I wanted to get induced so they sent me the next day to the hospital & because my baby was already a full baby the doctor said you wanna have her already so we can induce you I said yes.
Im 40 weeks but didnt feel any labour yet, why whats happen
Being induced sucks! I have a 8 year old I was induced at 42 weeks and wasnt dilated or nothing .and now were barely having our 2nd child I'm now 41 weeks and I hope I go into labor naturally before my induction appointment. Im barely 2 or 3 cms dilated on my own.being induced sucks it's like asking for ur body to be put in more pain .I've waited all I can honestly ..
The due date is an approximate. So that means it not an exact date. So why the request an exact 41 week to be induce?. And they will not before that?. If I'm 39 week it can easily be 40 weeks as it's not and exact date? So waiting for a 41 week to be "medical indicate" it can also easily be 42 or 40 weeks.
It might only be an estimate but once that baby pass that estimate due date, you are risking your baby getting infected with it's own bowl movement and possibly a still birth. So don't let no doctor tell you other wise because trust me you will be sad as hell if they cause you to lose your baby just because they don't want to induce you
Am 40weks 2 days but no sign of labor am feeling pain at my left side my doctor said is labour pain but don't feel it like that
My dr want to induce me at 41wk 2days I asked if I could get induced a bit earlier but she said no I have to be at least 41wk 😒
i am 40 weeks and 2days pregnant now ..but still i never feel contractions. but i like to labor in normal delivery
My wife was 41 weeks n 3days doctors suggest for c section as baby head was not dropped.when contractions started we went to hosptl den also dey told to have c section so some mid wives suggested some exercises den my water was broken den I had normal delivery. It was only becaz of god n mid wives
I’m exactly that today and all my midwife can suggest is a membrane sweep on Wednesday. So frustrated because that can take up to 48 hours to have and that’ll take me to the weekend which will be 41 weeks. Then I’ll have to wait a few more days for an inducement appointment. In my opinion if it’s your first baby (in my case it is) I think they should induce once you’re past 40 weeks. I’m in the U.K. so this isn’t common.
plz what are the exercises I need that.
I was 40 week passed due. I was given petosin i stay 1 centimeter 5 am till i gave birth C-section 5:16 pm. I was told that my baby umbilical cord was wrapped around my baby neck, and plus the amniotic fluid had meconium green the dr. @@danielat1420 absolutely. I believe it was because it just wasn’t time for my baby. I should have waited and let him come out when he was ready. Pitocin did nothing for me. If you can wait, wait. Otherwise get induced only if you have to.

What does it mean if you are having contractions but not dilating?
I was the same, and my Doctor ended up using pitocin on me because my labor wasn't progressing, I don't know why they wanna wait until 42 weeks to get a baby out. My baby was almost 9 pounds and she was 38 weeks. Talk to your Doctor because if you are having contractions and not dilating they should do something about.

Meet a lady that had her baby at 45 weeks, she told me her baby was so big he ripped her all the way to her anus. Yikes! I think it depends on where you are at her child is in his 30 now. I had my second child at 42 and half weeks everything was just fine I was induced had to have my mucus plug stripped it hurt so bad I was crying, my baby girl came out within 5 hour. I really think it depends on each persons body. My opinion the placenta will produce what is needed as long as it should. I mean what where they doing before all the medical technology?
The fear they put into pregnant, hormonal and worried mamas is disheartening. I’m having my third and although I’m considered high risk this time, I am still trying to filter through all of the opinions and information to make the best decisions for myself and my baby. If it’s not exhausting enough to be 41 weeks pregnant, having to advocate whilst uncomfortable is so hard.

40 weeks 5 days not a hint of progression. But because my blood pressure isn't high, theres no protiens in my urine, and baby is fine they refuse to induce me until 41 weeks. In this last trimester I've been to the ER 5 times due to my other complicated medical that is made worse with the pregnancy. I havnt been put on bed rest by my doctor but I've been housebound and bedridden for TWO WEEKS now because I can't go far without blacking out or falling down... I'm eating up my maternity leave and I have no baby yet... When he's born I will only have four weeks to heal before I have to go back to work, quit, or be fired.
At least you are for sure not having csection.

Disagree! some women go into labour before the induction appointment. The due date is an estimate that is why they are given a few days past the due date. Having your baby naturally is better than being induced.

Gia de Quiroz you will be induce at 41 weeks you don’t get a c-section just because your baby didn’t drop into your pelvis you get a c-section if your baby is breach or medical emergency
Sometimes baby’s don’t drop until you’re in actual labor
Seems risky stillbirth can happen at 40 weeks but instead of that baby being induced and saved they tell the mom to wait.
This happened to me on 20th July. I was 41 week pregnant and was asking doctor to do somthing but he sent me back home. Suddenly movement stop and I lost my baby girl. Doctor don't know what happened. We are still searching for reason of this demise.

I'm confused, you just said if your 41 weeks you HAVE to be induced. I know plenty of moms who delivered at 41-42 weeks naturally. And the AMA defines a healthy term baby from 37-42 weeks gestation. I feel like your misleading some women to feel like they can't advocate for themselves past 7 days due. You don''t HAVE to do anything, its your body and baby.
After 40 weeks your placenta will start to decrease in functionality. It’s best to get out sooner than later at that point. Sure your body can do it… but it’s higher risk of still birth, etc. She’s not misleading as she laid out the consequences.
