  • In this video Hugh goes for a ride on SWR's class 458, which deserves some more love, especially as its current incarnation is about to be phased out.

    Also if you are wondering what 'Go Niners' means, its the Super Bowl tomorrow (the day after this gets uploaded) and the San Francisco 49ers must attain victory over the Swifties (as the pop star's boyfriend plays for the KC Chiefs). COME ON NINERS!
    Update: They Lost

    Words cannot describe the joy of seeing a 458 pull up instead of a 455 (unless it's BR livery ;)

    On the 24th, South western railway introduced the 458/4 on the waterloo to weybridge service.

    Sadly being withdrawn. And there are now no plans to introduce them (458/4) on the Pompey Direct.

    They run a service 458 going to Haslemere at 21.45 from London arriving at 22.49. They have the guard to use the tannoy to announce the next station.

    The 458's are a real workhorse of a train, and comfy seats!
    Am going to be at Waterloo tomorrow morning funnily enough, heading down to Kempton Park, all being well.

    First time I saw one was Christmas eve I was on Footplate on 41312 on Santa's on the Mit Hants 1999 Railway. It was on Driver training. But sat down on platform 2 with Electrical problems. Feel old 😪

    Many thanks for this - yes, the 458s do have a complicated history! was it only the Gatwick express ones which were known as 'Darth Vaders'? It's nice to have a bit of interest in the coaching stock - I remember catching a train on the Reading (southern) line in 1968, when the old Southern Railway 2-BILs were still running: rather elegant, and distinguished by actually having toilets! And the seats were really comfortable ... At Reading, there was just an 'add-on' single platform on the south side - sufficient for the half-hourly Waterloo service; the Tonbridge trains (not then called 'North Downs') ducked under the fast GWML tracks and had a bay track in the centre island platform.
    Look forward to your next video

    Underrated train and underrated channel. I love the 458s, they are definitely one of the better commuter trains out there. I just like something about it’s design. Earned a sub

  • @Ron_TTE
    @Ron_TTE Před 5 měsíci +1

    About the seats, I strongly agree that they are comfortable and in my opinion the best on the SWR network. Looking back at the 444s, 450s, 158s, 159s and other refurbs, The seat's are retained during refurbishment, just with new fabric covering for the seats, apart from moquette. If you smack the seats on the 458, they do have a lot of dust, so it is possible for less comfortable seats or just new padding to come, but as far as I am aware, I think the seats will retain the same level of comfort.

    Interesting history of the class 458s. I think the best way to sum up these units (and also the class 175s and 180s) is very pleasant to travel on, but notoriously unreliable

    The maximum speed of the Class 458/0 and 460 was 100mph, but the motors of these units were re-geared for Class 458/5 for a maximum speed of 75mph. The original top speed is being restored for the Class 458/4.
