Replacing PTO bearings is a simple task with just a few shop tools that you have laying around my method works flawlessly but I’m sure there are thousands of other ways to do it and this is just one of them

Excellent video and clear video. Helps a great deal, particularly the "rigged" set up to remove and press in the bearings and bell housing.

Awesome tip! I have a Stihl FS131R with a stripped gear head. It requires a really long pair of snap ring pliers. Do you have any advice on how to disassemble the newer style gear head on the Stihl trimmer? Would love to see a video on rebuilding one. Thank you for the awesome videos. Please keep them coming.

Some of the Stihls are a pig as the circlip is deep with narrow access. I ground down some long reach pliers to points which worked.

When pressing bearings in, you should press the outer bearing race, not the inner bearing shown in this video. Pressing in on the inner race can damage the bearing.

These bearings are not an interference fit . Were using the tiniest amount of pressure here, no damage to anything I assure you. thank you for your concern. The way it is designed to be able to press the clutch drum in you have to press on the center race no other way around it

I've also heard you can press out that bearing with kerosene!

What size weedeater was this? I have a echo 266. The housing is getting extremely hot. Do you have a part number on those bearings if it’s a 266

There are no circlips on my Echo GT22GES housing that I can see. Should I go ahead and try to press out the clutch drum ?

  • @waylonlegend4603

My drum looks new, but it sounds like the bearing grinds loudly when it’s running.

    Can the clutch get stuck

My 242 has a snap ring but there is nothing on each end for a tool to grab onto. Even if there was the hole it is tiny and all of the pliers that I have found are too big to work.

Will bad bearings cause the clutch cover to get really hot?

      Absolutely

Ok cool I’ll start with replacing the bearing. It gets so hot that it had almost burned my arm when taking the clutch cover off is there anything I would need to be aware of?
