Another fun fact related to these areas, each one is actually based on one of the four seasons. The Ruins is Fall since throughout the area you can see piles of leaves lying around. Snowdin is winter for obvious reasons. Waterfall is Spring since it's filled with plant life and blooming flowers. Hotland is Summer since it's a really hot area. Also when you start up the game, if you go to the settings menu, how it looks and the music that plays there will actually change depending on what season it currently is in real life.
