hashbrowns is another one of those odd American words. it is both singular and plural.
      one order of hashbrowns
all twenty of us want hashbrowns
almost everyone eats catsup on their hashbrowns.
as for the bacon, i like mine crispy, but not brittle. my oldest daughter likes hers SUPER crispy. my middle girl likes hers soft. my youngest prefers hers like mine; crispy but not brittle. message here is to do what makes you happy and leave everyone else in the dust.

Hashbrowns are easy to make from scratch also. Simply grate potato.....soak them in water for about 30 minutes to pull out the starch. Drain and press dry in cheese cloth or a clean kitchen towel and fry the exact same way you just did! You can add diced bell peppers and onion to your hashbrowns if you want to jazz them up a bit too.

@@kattat919 If they were grey it is because you did not rinse the starch out of them first. If I don't rinse them, they do indeed turn a shade of grey. If you don't want to rinse them, avoid them turning color by spreading them thin and let them sit in the pan and completely crust on the bottom and then flip the whole thing over like a pancake and then brown the other side. Doing it this way will help keep them from becoming grey glue in the middle.

A tip for getting your eggs to not pop: turn the heat to medium-low and let your pan cool down before adding the eggs. Keep the flame low and use your spatula or turner to cut through the egg whites as they cook, letting the raw white flow down to the hotter cooking surface. It takes longer, but you will never have burned lacey edges on your eggs. Then when the yolk is still runny, flip the egg gently over and cook the yolk as long as you like. I am an "over-easy" girl, so I only cook it another 15 seconds. But eggs are so delicate, they cook better over low heat.

the tough part on hash browns is letting them sit long enough to brown... first few times most people make them they flip to early and to often, and then you follow it by flipping to little and not often enough LOL.
Good rule of thumb is let them sit on medium-high heat for a solid 3 minutes before trying to flip. The goal is a crisp golden brown

  • @tj_2701
    @tj_2701 Před rokem +2

If you want to make your hash-browns like an American then you cook them how you like them. Season how you want, add what you want, make them cakes or loose if you want. Eat them with what you want and when you want.

  • @AlyseKnits
    @AlyseKnits Před rokem +4

When I make hash browns, I just use raw potatoes. I grate them using a cheese grater, squeeze them to get out excess moisture, then I fry them in a pan like you did. I cover them first with moderate heat so that the steam cooks them, then take off the cover, raise the heat to brown them. You can form them into cakes if you like, or cook them scattered, like you did. You can cook them with onions (you can precook the onions until they are brown, then add them at the end, so that you can get them completely caramelized), and diced ham, and covered with cheese. Also, if you don't peel the potatoes before you shred them on the grater, you will get more potato flavor.

Hi from another Carol! Wonderful "not" a cooking show!! Hash browns can be seasoned anyway you want. Most common is onions or onion powder or onion salt and pepper. Stir and fry for a bit then leave them alone to get crispy , then divide up into servings and flip and let that side get crisp. I eat mine with ketchup but sometimes we have them with the white country or sausage gravy on top. When I don't have the time to make biscuits, we do toast topped with the fried egg and pour the country/sausage gravy over that along with over the hash browns. And of course, a side of bacon!!! The hot fudge sauce I will warm up and spread as a thin layer on top of a vanilla or chocolate cake. I love it more than frosting on a cake and so much easier!

The fudge that hardens on the ice cream is used a lot of times on an ice cream cone. The ice cream is covered and doesn't melt as quickly outside in the heat. You can start at the top and work your way down the ice cream before it all melts and makes a runny mess. It kind of keeps it all contained a little longer.

We have bacon in various flavors such as black pepper, hickory smoked, applewood smoked, honey, honey barbeque, pumpkin spiced, apple cinnamon, jalapeno, cajun, maple syrup, etc. We also have crumbled bacon bits in jar or packet & bacon spice in a jar.
You did hash browns right. Personally, I only use salt & pepper. If you want a different taste, add what you like. Some people like them with ketchup or salsa.
After adding hot fudge on ice cream, add whipped cream, sprinkle with chopped peanut bits, & maraschino cherry on top & you will have what we call a "hot fudge sundae."
When cooking, you are ones eating it, so make it as you like it.

When the hash browns are fully cooked, you can add a slice of cheese on top. When cooking you can add mushrooms, tomatoe, ànd green or regular onion to your taste. I also eat ketchup on mine!

    Tater Cakes:
1/2 cup mashed potatoes PER SERVING (cold leftovers work best)
    RECIPE
    1-2 cps cold mashed potatoes
2 TBS flour (add more if need to thicken to form cakes. They should be of good consistency, like a burger patty)
1 egg (helps hold it together)
Salt and Pepper to taste or any spice that floats your boat
    Add-in options:
    Onion, diced small
    Kernel corn
    Bacon bits
    2 cps potatoes = about 4 cakes
Form into thickish patties and put in a frying pan with hot shortening. Do not put in a cold pan.
Remove when both sides are nicely browned.
Serve while warm with eggs or serve cold and make a sammich (sandwich) with ketchup, BBQ sauce, a picante sauce or salsa.
    Bon Appétit

With the hashbrowns, you didn't do anything wrong and can do whatever is to your taste...salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, etc., just remember it's however YOU love to spice up potatoes. You can totally add ketchup to eat them. Some would use hot sauce. You can even melt some shredded cheese over them :). A lot of stuff like that box of hashbrowns is really just for convenience, like instant mashed potatoes, pasta/sauces, etc. The frozen food section also has hash browns. I can't think of anybody I know outside of them working as a cook/chef who like grating potatoes just to make hashbrowns, lol. I've done it and it was a PAIN :). If you do cakes or patties, you have to add an egg and flour to the potatoes to bind them. Looked fabulous!

Those hash browns turned out absolutely perfect! You can buy the pre-formed "cakes" of hash-browns here in the US, and they're definitely good, but I prefer mine the way you guys made them... just add a little salt and pepper, and I'm happy! Bacon, eggs, toast and hash browns,... mmm mmm yum!

Restaurants form them into "patties" so they can stack them up to have them ready for a quick reheat when needed.

Lowry's seasoned salt would be good with hashbrowns. I think a lot of Europeans think of hashbrowns like the ones McDonalds sells but you got the good stuff today.

Recky, what you were thinking of is a pancake. Whenever I make hashbrowns, I finish cooking by adding a bit of butter to help brown the potatoes. Potato pancakes are really good, but you'd have to find a recipe.

When you add eggs and bacon or other protein to the skillet and mix them together, it's called a hash or sometimes called a skillet or gridle. And yeah, you can definitely add anything with a hashbrown to make a hash. Peppers, bacon, sausage, gravy, chicken, onion, whatever vegetable or flavor you like can easily find its way into a hash.

My dad was from Louisiana and used Cajun or Creole seasoning on everything that wasn't sweet. 😂
I usually make my hash browns from scratch but shredding the potatoes can be a pain. Other than that I buy these hash brown patties in the frozdn section and just pop them in the oven. I like mine eith bacon and eggs or with biscuits and gravy. Eggs or gravy eother one taste great on hash browns.
Nothing like hot fudge on vanilla oce cream with whipped cream on top. The Magic Shell is supposed to be similar to the coating on an Eskimo Pie or Klondike Bar.

I'm from San Antonio, TX, so of course I like salsa on my hash browns. If you REALLY want to go Tex-Mex, you guys should try Pico de Gallo. It's like a fresh chunky salsa, made with chopped onions, tomatoes, jalapenos and cilantro (fresh coriander leaves). Very, very good, tho some people HATE cilantro.

You can make homemade fudge sauce, chocolate sauce easily at home using any chocolate bars or chocolate chips. Then add slices of your favorite fruit. Strawberries or bananas are my favorite and taste delicious with chocolate. Or, both at the same time. lol.

I like to cut up the sausages and eggs, and just mix those and the hash browns all together and just devour it… Another favorite is Belgian Waffles topped with strawberries and a whipped cream… sooo good

A very easy way to cook hashbrowns from scratch is to grate potatos, squeeze some of the water out, and then spread them on a cookie sheet or a bakeing dish. Salt and pepper to taste. Then bake in the oven at around 350F-400F (180-205c) until crispy on top (around 10-20 minutes).

  • @breadmakerbreadmaker5283

Another incredible video from Recky and Carol's "It's not a cooking show." Recky looks so sweet in his apron. I have never seen potatoes that have to be soaked in water prior to frying, so if this is a American thing, I am not aware of it. I grate my own potatoes and do them from scratch. I will have to try this way as it seems much easier than my way of cooking hash browns. You both were a delight with your hot fudge topping and the "shell" topping. I love hot fudge topping and you would be amazed Carol if you look up recipes on youtube for hot fudge. It is very easy to make at home. Much love, hugs, and prayers to you both. Great video!

That fudge topping in the jar is as close to homemade as if you made it. butter, cream , & cocoa -perfection! My husband likes it out of the jar on a spoon too Recky 🤣
