      I agree. "The Continental Kit" is a silly name, too. I don't think you would've seen too many cars "on the Continent" with that ghastly contraption on the back.

    I love this car. Grew up in Mexico, and in the 80s - early 90s, this car was marketed as the Ford Grand Marquis. It was a status symbol - the car of the elite! By 1992, imports were again permitted and more luxurious cars entered the market. But, if you grew up like me in the 80s-90s, this was it! Wish I had the space!

    I love your videos Anthony. These GM B Body and Ford Panther platform cars have been forgotten by so many. These things were everywhere when I was growing up. They always felt so “substantial” when I rode in them, floating down the boulevard or interstate with those long hoods bobbing up and down over the bumps. We never had one of these cars but many of my friends families did. Those emissions choked V8s had ridiculously low HP but they always had enough low end grunt to get you moving, smoothly and quietly. Sounds stupid but I always loved the roar of those big belt driven engine fans. Still do. A characteristic not found on modern front drive or AWD cars. Also, nothing can replace that full size body on frame ride. Something that today’s car buyers will never know. So please keep those videos coming of those old survivor Caddies, Buicks, Oldses, Pontiacs, Chevys, and Ford Lincoln Mercuries. Every time I see one of your videos it takes me back to when I was about 12 yrs old and really started getting into and appreciating well built cars. Closest thing to a time machine that I can find. Thank you.

    Grandma-Key! OMG, especially with the Northeastern accent, it just says it right there. This is grandma's car. My grandma drove an '85 from 1995-2003. Something I also love about the old luxo boats is the cigarette lighters in both doors in the rear, those really come in handy today for charging and powering Phones, tablets, GPS's etc. What a nice example. That interior is fantastic. I love the gauge cluster.

    Oh Anthony gorgeous car. I would take that car over any brand new car on the road now hands down & it would probably last hell of a lot longer most likely if it was in my hands it definitely would. My first car was a 1985 Crown victoria oh I loved that car it was gorgeous. I had it for 6 years until an ass hole tow truck driver towed it from the front & it pretty much bounced for 6 miles to the tow yard. Transmission was destroyed & of course they denied it and I had a witness who saw it being towed like that but didn't want to be involved. So I had to get rid of it 😔😡 but would love to have another panther body again

    I know u love the aftermarket grilles, cloth tops and continental kits but I think those are what ruins these beauties. The Conti kits hold dust/dirt/water in every crevice. Nothing cheesier then the caddies that have the cloth strip on top of the door when you open it. Might as well put curb feelers on both sides too...lol. If they were at least only on the roof but hey, to each his own. 💯🇺🇸

      Not only for the elderly! I am a 53-year old Dutchman. I wish modern cars would have buttons or turn knobs for basic functions like heating! Now it is all included in an infotainment system, often voice controlled. Pretty annoying to operate in our busy traffic!

    Had a 89 crown Vic LTD I bought in 2007. I love that car. It was black with black vinyl in the chrome package with the royal blue interior. I wish I could find a car like that now, but now they're usually both extremes either. They're complete clunkers that need engine and transmission. Swapped with rust damage and dense and dings. Bubba and college kids have ripped out the system and rewired everything. It's all ghetto trashed or the other end of the spectrum. They're completely all original, low miles, well kept and they're like $30,000 which is like double the price that they were brand new.

  • @davidfrania8990
    @davidfrania8990 Před 3 lety +1

    What a nice Grand Marquis! It's a GS but that interior looks like the LS, so I wonder how that happens? Anyway, those were great cars meant for cruising. My Dad had an LS of that vintage, and later on traded it in for another when they were restyled. He really loved those cars...I just wish I would have kept the last one he had, as it only had 38,000 miles when my Mother passed in 2006. I know that the couple who bought it from us are still driving it today! Great cars!

    Love this 1990 Mercury! I have a 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis GS, about the same colour, but with a grey vinyl top. Mine has 364,000 miles, though, so I have no idea if it has any value at this point. It still runs smoothly, but it shows wear -- especially on the paint. I have similar grey velour seats. I like the layout of my dashboard better, and the appearance of the steering-wheel. The radio is about the same. But my cruise control stopped working a long time ago. My hubcaps also require a key, but the clips on the little caps are falling apart. My spare is a narrow whitewall Michelin. I wish I had the money to replace mine with this one. But I am 77 years old, and I struggle to live on $1,187 a month. In Connecticut, in a parking-lot, the entire right side was side-swiped about four years ago -- and there is some surface rust where the paint was scraped off. Where in Massachusetts are you located?

Never did understand why Mercury offered that...just silly looking. I would recommend replacing that spare tire as well, since it's 30 years old. The rest of the car looks incredible!! My aunt had about a 82 like this but yellow and the car wouldn't quit running, sure the door locks didn't work and half the windows didn't work and there was rust, but she faithfully drove it back and forth to church in the next town and it just got so old in 2010ish and she purchased a 2003 and owned it for the rest of her life and then they gave her car to one of the brothers after she passed and then gave the 03 to another brother when he passed and as far as I know it still runs, those old maquis never die, the problem with these is that even simple parts are becoming hard to find. Also my aunt also a 70's model maquis that was older when they upgraded when she won a lawsuit because she wanted to.

    ...Anthony...glad you followed your instincts on this " Grandma Key"... the continental kit was absolute overkill for a GS, and speaks to Merrimack's (and a number of other dealers at that time) to "over-gild the lily" ( needlessly overdecorate) their cars to boost their bottom line.
    Most dealers resisted this temptation, realizing that the bulk of their profits came not from the initial sale; but from maintenance and repairs after the sale....
    ...that said, this canvas faux-roadster roof works well by itself to enhance the pewter gray of this GS...
    ...and being a Texan, we appreciate that premium velour upholstery...no leg burns from scorching leather...
    ...kudos to the " Grandma" who took such loving care of her "Key"...

    What's wrong with the Continental Kit, I think they look good especially on a Lincoln.
