  • Sorrento is one of Campania’s most stunning destinations, cascading down a steep hillside and spreading across the clifftops above the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s arguably Campania’s hub, with ferry links to Capri and Ischia, easy road access to the Amalfi Coast and Naples, and fast rail connections to Pompeii., that's probably why Gennaro Contaldo loves it so much!
The town overlooks the Bay of Naples, with fantastic views across the water to Mount Vesuvius. The old town is a warren of narrow streets lined with small shops and hole-in-the-wall cobblers (handmade sandals are something of a speciality here). Stretching from the seafront onto the main street, it's the ideal shopping location. Antiques can be found at the Teodoro Del Giudice, while the weekly market is the place to pick up everything from jackets to handbags. The streets of Sorrento come alive at night thanks to an array of restaurants and bars. In the summer months the locals will fill the outside terraces of the cafes and restaurants creating a bustling atmosphere, particularly around the pretty main square, Piazza Tasso. For a seafood supper, head down to the waterfront Marina Grande, where you'll find a selection of wonderful fish restaurants.

Going in May (2019) staying at the Art Hotel Gran Paradiso in Sorrento. We will do the trip on the Circumvesuviana narrow gauge railway to Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station, which I am told is about €2.50 per person each way from Sorrento. Looking forward to our trip and hoping weather will be kind to us.

I got pickpocketed in train to Sorrento from Napoli, and that completely ruined my day.

That train is a commute train, not recommend to tourists. You should have used a private car transfer, that is normally what the majority of tourists do since that train is slow and always crowded.

Sorry to hear that. I went a year ago, took the same train. You have to be careful like anywhere else.
