Fun fact: Ian Flynn was originally going to make a ending for Sonic Underground in one of the issues of Sonic Universe but sadly he couldn't. Sonic, Manic and Sonia would have had modern designs and presumably other characters too. Even though Ian Flynn never had the chance to make the story Archie Sonic’s fan continuation Archie Sonic Online would later make their own conclusion to the story that involves the trio getting Super forms and Robotnik getting robotizied

Supposedly in the 80s up to about the early 2000s kids shows weren’t allowed to have proper endings to encourage children to keep rewatching the show but man do I hate that they did that
I grew up with sonic underground on dvd, and I loved it to death. I still look back on it fondly. It’s sad that the show never got a proper ending.

Oh, God, I really thought this show was good back in middle school... Well, regardless, I agree that the dynamic of the main trio is the highlight of the show. I think my favorite episode is the one where they go to that parallel reality where they're the evil dictators.
It's a cliché, I know, but it was still cool seeing this "what if" scenario. It pretty much showed what would happen if the trio had all of the power they were born into, but their mom still wasn't around to guide them.
"The children grew, but didn't learn what's right."
The biggest problem with Underground was the lack of a cohesive storyline due to it being aired and released on DVD out of order.
About 10 years ago, I sat down and watched the series through about 3 times with a notebook and made note of key plot and character moments. Ended up with an episode order that makes the whole series make a lot more sense, and felt like the way the story was intended to be. This episode order also fixes the problem with Bartleby's lack of character development as well by showing him actually change from a Robotnick sympathiser to a proud member of the resistance, instead of making him look like a flip-flopping double agent
You know, when you explain it that way it may explain why my experience growing up with this show seems so different from other interpretations since the DVD I had showed the correct order. Thanks, I'll watch the series again that way and relive some memories.
Not the best answer but I remember a comment on another video about 80s-2000s shows stating that they probably did that to have the audience not worry about continuity so like episode 1 will establish stuff about them but then episode 4 will change something and the episode 5 will relate to episode 1

it feels like a fever dream on its own to hear someone talk about underground in a more positive light rather than shitting on the show just for existing. It's refreshing. I want to hear about the good things bad shows did.
Not the best show ever, but it did have a lot of charm. Always remember it fondly.
I'm so disappointed that Manic never got to sing more. It sounded so cool to me (like his solo in "I Can Do That For You") and his singing voice was done by Tyley Ross, who is a Grammy nominated artist.

The premise of Sonic Underground was probably outdated by the time it aired. The idea of using musical instruments as weapons sounds like it came from a cartoon made in the 80s. Not something from 1999. It’s like someone at DiC found an idea for a possible new cartoon written years ago and decided to make it in an attempt to be “hip with the kids”. And Sonic’s inclusion looks like a last minute design choice. It’s like DiC feared that nobody would watch their cartoon and decided to put Sonic in it in an attempt to get some recognition. Jaleel White’s voice had gotten deeper. It’s almost to the point that he doesn’t work as Sonic anymore. The fan film that came out 14 years later solidified this. And on top of all that, the show would quickly be buried by the launch of the Dreamcast (which it was supposedly intended to promote) and Sonic Adventure. It’s still baffling that Sega would allow this rather than tell DiC to make a tie-in cartoon instead.
I think at time both Underground and Adventure started development at the same time, but Sonic Team and SEGA of both East & West were spiraling out of control due to national differences that plagued their egos and understanding.
Peter Moore was trying to give the Japanese studio a reality check, but was bluffed by it.
I felt show could have done without that musical band sibs. I think that even goes back to the 70's. The way this show was written, they could have written this differently and on the level of SatAM.

I own 3-4 dvds of Sonic Underground, but then I realized, 'Oh there is no conclusion, dang" So I stopped finding the dvds and welp, there weren't anymore from what I've gathered. (No, I didn't get to see the robot baby episode, which was probably one of the dvds that I could never find after production of the old sets were gone) RIP Kmart
Boy, does this take me back! I binged this show when I was a tween but never watched it since, so I only have my memories to go by. For some reason, the episodes I remember best were Sonic overcoming his fear of water and the one where Manic doesn't know whether he should stay in the hidden city or go with his siblings. I liked Sonic's development along with the weird town in the first one, it was almost atmospheric. Almost. As for the second one, I was obsessed with Manic so any episode focused on him was a win lmao
I'm a simple person. I see someone talk about Sonic Underground, I watch to see their opinion on Sleet and Dingo. (my favorite characters).
As a huge Sleet and Dingo fan, it hurts that their...lack of character development. Expecially because there was inconsistencies with them. Some episodes had Dingo like Sonia, some didn't. The actual FIRST episode that aired, being Wedding Bell Blues, had no such hint to that whole plot point, so it makes that plot point so...confusing.
Not only that, some episodes Sleet doesn't mind Dingo's presents. Other episodes, he hates the canine's guts and plots his demise! So even HE'S inconsistent in that sense.
Back with the topic of Dingo and Sonia: While we can very VERY easily write off that Sleet and Dingo are adult coded...we don't know that for sure. Their age is never mentioned. Hell, technically, the triplets also don't have an age, but we'd assume it is 15. For all we know, Dingo is not even 18 yet. We don't even know if that form we see him in IS his actual form, being a Shapeshifter and all. But, yeah...most likely, Sleet and Dingo are adults and this plot point aged like already spoiled milk.
Just another note: Bartleby is apparently 18, which is also red flagged because he was proposed to Sonia. So it isn't just Dingo.
My favorite episode was Underground Masquerade, by the way. The duo's dynamic was really nice in that one, with Sleet ACTIVELY praising Dingo. So...the wolf doesn't HATE him...at least in that story's pocket.
i always assumed the trio is over 18, and i still think they are, so it baffles me when people think dingo crushing on sonia is weird

That opening was awesome. And I personally love sonic Underground. It's a good time if you look past the flaws. And I love knuckles in this show, and his Dinosaur Chomps.

I actually have my own Metal Sonic concept for this show where Robotnik finds the same magic mineral that the amulets are made of and decides to create his own musical Hedgehog to battle them. The idea is basically metal Sonic's power source is his amulet and he has a DJ booth where he would have music battles against Sonic Sonia and Manic where he would play techno remixes of their songs.
I honestly thought I was the only one who noticed this show's shortcutting inspired knuckles' red electric powers in the movie!
I like a majority of the songs from this show, but one of my favorite episodes from the series is when they were trying to find their mother at the Castle that was "Sold" to Sonia.
Sonic Underground feels like someone gave a budget to a 12 year old Sonic fan to animate their Deviantart fanfic.
And I love it for that

Tbh I took Sonia (and Sonic by extent) to be like, 19, given the former is (or was) engaged.
I already considered this show to be pretty underrated, I actually enjoy it for what it is, but I'm even more impressed now that it's as good as it is; given how quickly everything needed to be produced. I mean I knew it obviously had a rush production (that is clear just from watching it) but I didn't know how rushed it actually was. Imagine if they actually had time to flesh things out and rework some episodes.

@@NES-ml3by Because despite the shows flaws it had its own charm and heart. Watching it again I genuinely liked the siblings interactions and dynamics, I liked the show dystopian setting, and I feel some of its episodes themes while not always well executed had good ideas.
I'm not saying Underground is the best or that it needs a reboot. I just think for what it was it was an interesting footnote in Sonic media that I wish had a better production.

Sonic series was already 8 years old when sonic underground came out, sonic never had siblings in the canon or came from royalty or fought with instruments so the story wouldn't have tied into the canon

I watched this show as a teen on youtube and crazily enough it held my attention whenever I had the time. I remember once I ended up so absorbed into the absolutely bonkers shit going on I only caught myself in the middle of the fucking night 🗿

This show’s a guilty pleasure of mine. It’s stupid, it’s weird, but I kind of like it. This show just needed five more episodes to wrap things up and it would have been great.
Sonic Underground has to be the most bizarre Sonic cartoon I've ever seen, it's even more bizarre than the Sonic OVA movie (and that's saying something, given how much of a fever dream that movie was). Where to start with the reasons why Sonic Underground is so bizarre?
* Sonic is now fucking royalty
* No Tails
* Sonic keeps his classic appearance even though his current green-eyed appearance was already made official before Sonic Underground came out
One thing I genuinely like about Sonic Underground is that it features the first (and only) appearance of Knuckles in a Western Sonic cartoon.
It’s so weird that it makes Adventures look normal.

As someone who recently finished watching this show, the first part of this review felt incredibly ostracizing to anyone who actually enjoyed it. But I liked the middle and towards the end when you started going into detail about the show’s production and praising the team for what they accomplished despite the restraints.
To address the elephant in the room: Sonia was willingly engaged to Bartleby, another adult character, at the start of the show. So whatever age these anthropomorphic cartoon animals are supposed to be, in this universe, Sonia (and her brothers) are of age. And Dingo’s crush on Sonia was meant to be comedic.
Sleet and Dingo I felt had a good dynamic. Sleet was conniving and tried to rob and even overthrow Robotnik at times. That to me made him interesting. Dingo was an idiot that sometimes got clumsy, but it serviced the comedy and plot. They also had some really funny lines I think.
Sleet: “Listen. First we nab the hedgehogs and hide them. Then we tell Robotnik, and make him pay a lot of money!”
Dingo: “Retire?”
Sleet: “Yes, retire. You can spend the rest of your life, waiting on me hand and foot!”
Dingo: “Oh, boy! Wow! Thanks!”
I felt like Dingo was heavily influenced by Sleet and depended on him, which shaped his morals. Those experiments Sleet did on Dingo to transform him on the molecular level regularly probably didn’t help much either. But Dingo did show signs of being fed up with Robotnik, and even Sleet, like when he took the chaos emerald from Sleet in the hopes of ruling Mobius himself and making Sonia his Queen. I think if the series had continued he would have eventually switched sides for the sake of Sonia, probably towards the finale.
Robotnik himself may not have been a threat to the hedgehogs (because plot armor) but he was to everyone they loved, Roboticizing their family and that of the freedom fighters whenever he got the chance. And his voice was good. He was no Long John Baldry, but he certainly still HATED THOSE HEDGEHOGS!!! XD
But I digress.
A small handful of other recurring characters, like Bartleby and Cyrus, got development, so at least the show wasn’t completely devoid of it. I liked the bright colors of the main characters set against the dystopian background. The music videos were a mess to look at but I consider them a time capsule of music videos during that period. The songs themselves were hit or miss and mainly just used to fill in a scene. But some of them were indeed catchy.
My favorite episode would have to be “Six is a Crowd” where they went to the alternate universe where Robotnik was the good guy and they were the bad guys. Not only was the song really good but seeing the corrupted versions of Sonic, Manic, and Sonia was particularly fascinating.
Overall, the show isn’t BAD. That’s the point I want to get across. I have seen far worse. It’s not a masterpiece, but if you are a Sonic fan and have seen some of the other shows and want more Sonic content, check this one out. The characters of Sonic, Manic and Sonia are the main focus and draw and I enjoyed learning about them. Like how Sonia is very smart and mature despite probably losing the most when she joined the resistance and left the aristocracy. And Manic being a thief with a little integrity, a wicked lock-pick and hacker, a very knowledgable car mechanic, a pro air surfer, and on top of that being incredibly chill (“That’s Bogus!” XD) to me makes him even cooler than Sonic.
Anyway, check it out. I’d definitely recommend it.
You know, I heard there's a lot of fan ideas involving Sonic Underground and I also heard rumors about the series either coming back or getting a reboot. To this day, it's still unknown. Like Sonic X getting a fourth season, it'll probably never happen. Only Sonic fans can dream. Only fans.
@@NES-ml3by Too true. Like I said, only fans can dream. P.S. If Sonic X did get another season, I wouldn't be surprised if they're based on the other games. Like Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, even the 2006 game, just to name a few examples.
I would love a proper remake that completely finishes the story as well as takes time to make a consistent story from start to end.
This show definitely didnt age well when air it was an okay show but now it's bad.
I was always looking for missing ending till maybe 10 years ago finding there was no ending and that still is upsetting.
These need to be fix if there was ever a remake. They dont even need a song every episode.

Sonic Underground was so underrated; I loved watching this as a kid
Here is a fun fact about this series. It was born from the cacnelltion of Sonic Sat AM. Season 3 was planned and wokred out but Sega wanted a a more 'kid' version of Sonic that was far less mature or in depth. Underground was oriignally worked on by the creators of SAT AM and they treid their best and even wrote 1 episode. But just gave up as Sega kept screwing with them and denying them so much. They littearly had to reuse so many assets from SAT AM cause Sega wanted it out fast and to have a musical theme.
But you can see the fragments of the team trying to make this work and tell an interesting story in it's set up. Premise and even how Robotnick is portayed as alot weaker and more depedant on others than his SAT AM self. They really treid to make something here, but it's sadly half baked at best cause they simply gave up due to Sega's refusal to work with them.
And theend result was this. And Sega getting what they wanted in 'adventures of sonic the hedgehog' Which everyone agrees is kinda not that good outside of Robotnick's comedic abilties..
A couple of other things I've heard over the years:
The reason the songs are at times intertwined with the story is cuz DiC wanted to get royalties and supposedly got paid every time a song played per episode.
There were only 40 episodes (although fans believed there were more) cuz DiC anticipated a renewal but SEGA wasn't doing well financially at the time and thought it would be foolish to make another season of the show to promote Sonic when the show had nothing to do with it or Adventure 2.
Another production issue I recall hearing was that the alumni writers you mentioned were tasked to make the premise/tone like SatAM, but the cattle call writers tried making it "funny" like AoStH. So just as you said, the episodes had to be Frankensteined together so they just used the same episode format.
A few of the things they allegedly wanted to be reoccurring elements or give a payoff to but ended up just kinda being there and going nowhere were the Chaos Emeralds, (obviously) finding their mother, Manic becoming less of a kleptomaniac, Sonia becoming less snobby, Knuckles appearing more, a thieves guild mentioned in an episode helping along with some of their aristocrat friends helping in a sort of final battle, Sleet & Dingo would switch sides when they were deemed useless (again), their friends getting deroboticized and the Resistance's headquarters "Sanctuary" eventually being found out and attacked by Robotnik.
Obviously I don't know how true any of these are, but some of these sound more believable to me now. Now I've gotta go meet a guy about a bridge he's selling.

Especially since I too had an immensely huge block of "unfiltered ideas" and concepts for my cartoon/comic I've been making in 9th-12th grade that was basically the mere idea of the "Stream of Consciousness". Which I've first started writing down the stories I had and drawing the characters, as well as typing down everything about my concepts on Google Documents. Which I've been working on fixing as of right now.
Making it presentable is what I've been trying to work on making so nobody would get confused by my ambitions.

I always knew the show existed, but couldnt remember the name and always felt like a fever dream, a few years ago I watched half the show before giving up.
I still wished that they haven't left Sonic Undergrond as a cliffhanger at the end of that series because we never got to see Sonic, Sonia and Manic reunited with their mother Queen Aleena as well as the prophecy fulfilled of defeating Robotnik once and for all.

My favorite episode..? Idk, there were a lot of them, and I haven't seen it in a while. Maybe... Either the big feet sonic tonic episode, or the one with the Sonic siblings going to Egypt to find their ancient ancestor AhMon Rapi. Or something like that. I remember them fighting a giant sand worm. And I know that my favorite would be a different one for sure though, if I could just remember a few more...

It would really be nice if they got Manic and Sonja in the games… At least to me. Wonder what their abilities would be since they are sonic's siblings.

@@NES-ml3by dude, they never put Amy Rose in the cartoons before, so she's technically the first American made female hedgehog mobian on TV that they made other than the anime of course. And I know they won't put manic and Sonja in the games. I'm just saying to me that would be pretty sweet. And if it ever did happen, which I know it won't, I would love to know what their abilities would be.
@@NES-ml3by it would be nice if they did change the back stories for manic and Sonia however I do like the fact that all three of them are considered royalty and rulers of Mobius if they can change that up a bit, it might work.

when i was a kid we still had a store that let you rent movies, its been closed for awhile now but lasted longer than most, there was a free section for all childrens media, i cant tell how many times i rented out the exact same sonic underground dvd. the theme song makes me cry from nostalgia. im not even into sonic but this show is so close to my heart
Got given a dvd of this show as a kid. I haven't played a Sonic game ever, even to this day. I was baffled that Manic doesn't appear in the games or any other media

This show was my childhood… I never grew up on sonic games, but this was my Sonic. I was really sad that it never got a concrete ending. But I’m glad to hear people talking about it!

The first thing I thought when i read the title was "why the fuck would you do that?"
I actually watched Sonic Underground as my first exposure to sonic the hedgehog back when I was 4. I was obsessed. Also, my favorite part was always the intro. Actually slaps dude.
Despite everything, Sonic Underground still has better hedgehog designs that most side things. Other media (such as the comics) would straight up have hedgehogs that were just sonic but purple or sonic but teal. Crazy how Sonic's own twins look less like him than some of these examples.
When I was younger, the show was on Netflix for a short while, so I binged it all there, and it was… kind of my intro to Sonic? Like I’d known about it before hand, had watched some of Sonic X, but this was the first time I had really gotten so into it. Because of all that Sonic Underground has easily made its way into my heart. Also banger intro helps.

I grew up with Thai show, I used to get up at 6am every Saturday morning before my parents so I could use the TV to watch this show, I loved it so much. my mum even keeps a picture I drew of manic when I was 6.
I watch it now I’m older and you can see it’s flaws but hell I’ll always love it, as it’s a big part of my childhood.

I‘m from Germany and born in 1994. I always wondered why there wasn’t any new episodes. I really like the animation and the animation style. The animation has nice shading.
Oh, and speaking of Sonic shows, did you see the clips of Sonic Prime, because while they were nice, I still await for a full trailer, and in terms of games, more details about Frontiers came while Origins is having problems (especially with how buggy the PC version is). Yet I have been playing Fall Guys, which became free-to-play in the summer, and it's a pretty good time, but I am enjoying MultiVersus, and I recommend it while the open beta is still going on. And a new show that recently came was Dead End: Paranormal Park, a massive hit, though I'd like to hear about anything interesting you came across...
Sonic Prime does look interesting, but I'm still awaiting a full trailer.
For the recent Sonic games, Frontiers hasn't won me over yet. The IGN demo looked pre-Alpha and not very impressive. It's the Boost gameplay plastered on top of a BOTW test map. Maybe the full release will turn it around.
For Sonic Origins, I have no interest in yet another Genesis re-release. The Tyson Hesse cutscenes are fantastic. But, I'd rather they spend the resources on Sonic Mania 2 or something completely new. Also, SEGA needs to hire more competent PC porting teams. They haven't learned their lesson from the PC disaster of Sonic Colors Ultimate.
For summer games, I dabbled into Fall Guys. It's a fun time, especially for competitive minded folks. I have yet to play Multiversus, but the roster is super interest (ultra shaggy ftw). I'll have to try it on PC soon.
For summer television, I've heard about Dead End. I'll watch that as I work on my next YT project. Two shows I used as B roll will be covered in the future (hint: one is set in middle school and another is about miracles ;) ).

I completed the series many times I just enjoy the music but I'm bummed that it never got to tell the full story there was actually suppose to be sixty two episodes but only forty where aired
