  • We have been lighting our home with kerosene oil lamps for over 2 decades and just recently run into a problem of why some kerosene oil lamp users may find their oil lamps smell, especially upon extinguishing them.

    I get good kero at the gas station. But be sure to buy it during the heating season cause if you buy it in the summer it will be skunky

    Give Kleen Heat a try. It does cost more but it's so worth it. No smell at all! We have ask people when they would come over and our lamps were burning and they would say they smell nothing at all.

    We use a kerosene alternative, called Kleen Heat, and it has a faint smell when you blow it out, just for a moment. I use to watch for it on sale at the end of the season and found out it gets stronger with age too, so we buy it fresh and check the date on the boxes at Home Depot.

    I use to use that same kerosene in my lamps too and had the same issue with the horrible smell. I too started using Kleen heat and that has been the best fuel I have used. As already mentioned, the cost is quite a bit more but I feel that if it burns cleaner it must be better for your health too.

    i used the 1-K same as yours in the white bottle last night, in my oil lamp. i trimmed the very top of my wick so it would be 100% fresh, and burned the fuel for 6 hours. it was extremely clean. i couldn't even smell anything putting my nose right up to the top vents. Very strange. And a very nice even flame. Even turning it up high, no soot no smell.
    so i brought it inside, once i felt safe with it and it seemed stable, it's even more clean burning than my normal oil lamp oil, or even denatured alcohol which the stuff i get for both, is very clean. You'll only have a faint smell barely noticable only if you have basically no ventilation for a long time. Like over the course of hours. Otherwise, both my alcohol stove and heater, and oil lamp can be run all night and are fine with just minimal ventilation which u should have anyways when burning anything ya know..
    But This fuel was even less than that! lol i was kind of shocked. Super clean. i hope my next bottle will be consistent though. guess we will see.

    Lol, everyone complaining. I am over here burning diesel in my lamps. I don’t mind the smell and it is way cheaper. Off road diesel is cheaper still but I found it doesn’t burn as well. I had to mix it about 1 part clean K1 to 10 parts off road diesel so the wicks wouldn’t burn down so quick.

    I have also learned that some burners are better than others. The Queen Anne burner I have found is the best and burns clean. A few other "no name" burners always put off a burnt oil smell no matter what fuel I used. The burners that have an "insert" in the dome that directs the air seems to be the very best. Queen Anne made a few of these and Rayo also made a few. The Steel Mantel Burner is also in the best category.

    try paraffin no smell at all even when just sitting in the lamp, if you can find alladin lamps they use a mantle and the light is pure white and ,beautiful lamps and still being made

  • @georgesilverhawkstrailcame2297

    I very late to the party. I burn the smokeless no smell lamp oils, and I add a few drops of essential oil to each lamp and it really makes the house smell wonderful. Have you or anyone else here tried essential oil in the kerosene in your lamps? Just wondering if it would work as well.

  • @taniawallace4771

    I didn't even know you could burn kerosene in oil lamps. I always buy paraffin lamp oil. The actual lamp oil that Walmart has is cheap and it does smell horribly so I make sure I buy the paraffin. And they can still smell a little bit and I've had some of my burners specifically say paraffin lamp oil only. So I may have to give that kerosene stuff a try

      I thought Kerosene and Paraffin were the same thing. I thought it was called Paraffin in the UK, but Kerosene in the USA. Paraffin has been the oil used in the UK from way back. I was trying to see if I could make my oil last longer by lighting only one of the two wicks. It smelled quite a bit though. It is my first oil lamp and I was not sure how fast the oil burned. Last night, I lit both wicks and turned them down low for a while especially since it was cold. I gradually turned it up after a couple of minutes. I ended up with it turned up without any smoke but giving a really satisfying and relaxing lovely amount of light. The point I’m making is that I think the unlit wick being saturated with oil, but unlit, was giving off more of a smell because it was only warm, not burning. I only paid £8 for 5 litres of Bartoline Premium, so it’s not too expensive.

    If I buy kerosene by the gallon which is like 15$, the reason why it’s cheap is because it’s not very refined. I noticed that it has a bad sulfer smell, which may be due to the impurities that are burning. If I buy a lamp oil, it’s usually by a half gallon and it’s like 18$, but it has little to no odour, probably because it is more refined.

    We had power outage last night, so I put some old colored fuel in the oil lamp and it did gave a bad oder while burning.
    After lights came back on, I got rid of bad remaining oder by running Ozone Generator, the oder was soon gone.

    Thought, can you mix some lemon juice in with the kero? Furniture polish has lemon essence in it :) In my trade we use Peperment Oil, obtained from mega pharmacy, putting oil in pipes filling with water or nitrogen, doing a sniff test for leaks. Q: can mix pepermint oil in with kero? Have a (Zippo) pocket warmer, will give it a shot. Ps: In my neck of the woods, Speedway Gas Stations have Kero. In closing, Best Wishes to all.

    A little off topic, but from time to time I'll see some poor oil lamp that got stuffed with red diesel fuel on sale at the local flea market and I'll know the story behind what happened. I could wish people would do a bit of RESEARCH before trying to use something they are not familiar with, geez.
    Also, I found using paraffin lamp fuel is best for my nutmeg lamps as kerosene makes them flare up a bit before settling down and my #2 lamps perform best with kerosene especially when the fuel runs low. What do you think?

  • @gregpeterman1102

    I just paid over $10 for a gallon of clean burning kerosene from Walmart, and it smells worse than $4.50 a gallon red dye from the shell station.

  • @adama1294
    @adama1294 Před 3 lety

    I would also suggest to filter the fuel that keeps out the water and debris. You could have water in the lamp and if it gets to the wick it will burn bad.

    I made the mistake of getting the "Kerosene 1-K" in the gallon size from Wal-Mart once. I ended up using it strictly for lamps and tiki torches outside. Now, for most of my inside flat wick lamps I use the Florasense Lamp Oil sold by Wal-Mart. For my Aladdin Caboose Lamp and my Rayo Circular wick lamp, I buy the gallon of Kleen Heat (about $11 at Menards) as some others have already mentioned. Of course, I am not dependent on these as a regular source of light, but I do enjoy them on a regular basis and It's good to know I have them if I actually need them.

  • @DarkMetaOFFICIAL
    @DarkMetaOFFICIAL Před 2 lety +1

    yea. if it's dark yellow it's got some impurities. it should be pretty clear but kinda syrup like i guess. i just got this stuff today, and it's very strange. it doesn't smell like something in specific, like whatever this distillate concoction is, is not a particular precise thing. like smell gasoline.. that's gas. smell some denatured alcohol. you know immediately. if it smells even slightly NOT like that exact smell we all know, you immediately know something is a little off. like smelling your food and you just can't put your finger on exactly what it smells like or if it went bad but it feels weird. it makes me feel uneasy. and overall, when i just opened the bottle itself, it literally immediately smelled like i was in a garage or around diesel engines running. i feel like if i use this stuff indoors just having the bottle around will make it have that permanent shed smell. but i'm going to try burning it outside and see how it goes.
    but yea, every process is a unique process, it's tough to make petroleum products exactly the same every batch as time goes on many factors are always in flux constantly changing. The bottles and branding always are the same but what's in those bottles can vary drastically. or even be defective product or stale yep. plus from walmart who knows where anything comes from maybe aliens no one knows 😂🇺🇸 lets go brandon

  • @DarkMetaOFFICIAL
    @DarkMetaOFFICIAL Před 2 lety +1

    i feel like this company is probably using or attempting to use (probably improperly) a huge fractional distillation setup and most likely are just not that good at actual chemistry lol. not being consistent and precise. or just not completing the process or using a crappy method cuz it's easier and or cheaper. plus who knows with employees and strikes and whatnot. it could be a bunch of secretarys in there running around trying their best to read all the technical manuals and just winging it hoping to distill kerosene into "clean burning fuel" but failing. lol just send it out. shhhh. fill the barrels no one will know 😂
