He is currently 9 and was diagnosed with asthma at 6 months old because I saw him mouth breathing/panting like a dog and took him to the vet. They checked his heart and discovered the lung inflammation. We tried the inhaler first and it stressed him out so much we switched to oral steroids, but then he gained a bunch of weight. Now, he is more chill and I am able to do the inhaler every day with very little fuss. We also have an albuterol inhaler in case of longer asthma attacks. I did get an air purifier, which seems to help reduced the amount of attacks on per year, but we have not discovered the cause of the asthma (no smoking, perfume, flowers, etc in my apartment).
Would an allergy panel/test help figure out the triggers? I’m not sure how to figure it out.

The video linked in the description has info on what a proper food trial is, and it also discusses how it may be necessary to work with a veterinary dermatologist.
In that video, I also discuss secondary skin infections as those symptoms are the most common... Obviously that isn't applicable to a cat presenting with asthma!

@@VetMedCorner thanks! I appreciate you touching on this for me- it’s good to know that I’ve got a handle on what’s going on. The first vet I took him to didn’t really understand asthma and sent me to find someone else, so I’ve been weary.

My little girl, she's about 4 years old, short-hair. She does cough/wheeze but I don't really know how to call it because it happens very rarely. So rare that I forget it happens when it does. I think I've seen her doing it maybe twice up until now. I do have another cat, a senior cat, and I've never seen him doing the same thing so I wouldn't know. I'm really concerned because my girl does it when she's laying down with me and she starts positioning like she's about to throw up. When she does it, I try to tap on her to see if it gets better. It lasts about 1 minute. Is it a good idea to send her to the vet for x rays?

Did you happen to watch the video? As it describes, taking video of an episode (if possible) and seeing your veterinarian for a physical exam and chest x-rays is the necessary start to an appropriate medical work up.
      All the best!

Is is fair to assume most, if not all of the information you provided for cats works for our dogs as well?

    • @VetMedCorner

      Excellent question!
Asthma is significantly less common in dogs (but is still possible for them to get).
Yes, reducing exposure to respiratory irritants and treatment with corticosteroids +/- bronchodilators is still the cornerstone of treatment for dogs.
However, off the top of my head I'm not sure if food allergies ever present as asthma in dogs... So a prescription hypoallergenic food trial may not be necessary.

Is cat panting cause for concern? After running around a lot my cat pants and I’m a little concerned

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner  Před 2 měsíci

Thanks for the question. Yes, this is a serious concern and you need to see your veterinarian for an appropriate medical work up. This generally means chest x-rays and an echocardiogram. In the meantime, reduce your cat's running so you don't cause panting.

What would you reccomend for an emergancy , in case of an asthma attack.
If we're not aware our cat has asthma, is there a treatment that would help while on the way to the vet?
Some way to help the breathe easier ?

      Excellent question!
Unfortunately, there's nothing to administer at home. What you should do is work with a skilled positive reinforcement trainer to teach your cat how to be relaxed while traveling. Stress reduction is important for any animal with respiratory distress.
You should also already know who is available for emergency care so that you know who to call and where you are going *before* an emergency ever happens.
