    Is splooting a sign of hip dysplasia?

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner Před dnem

      Excellent question! It can be, but there are also dogs who 'sploot' in order to press their less thickly furred abdomen to a cool surface (like a freshly dug dirt bed, water, tile etc) to help them with temperature regulation. And there also seem to be some dogs who just like to lay in that position. So, if you are seeing a change in how your dog lays, or have concerns, your best bet is to consult a rehab or sports veterinarian for an assessment.

    Thank you for the video, Dr. Em! You're correct in saying that there is no tradition of acupuncture in China. I have Chinese family members and I've never even heard of it practiced in pets before! I think it's one thing for humans to willingly consent to acupuncture since they know what they're getting into and actually can determine the effects. On the other hand, it feels unfair and maybe even a bit cruel to subject our pets to this practice when they have no say in the matter and no understanding in what's going on!

    • @VetMedCorner

    Love your fact based info. Much needed in this day and age. Something truly beneficial we can all use! Recently our 13 year diabetic terrier passed and she went downhill so quickly we couldn't get to the vet in time. She stopped eating and drinking on Friday morning then whimpered and whined at night which she never did. We tried to comfort her as much as possible but could only wait until the vet opened on Monday. All through this our eight year old Australian shepherd witnessed and heard the cries and acted concerned. Our little terrier died a few hours before we could get to vet's office. After calling the vet we decided to bury her at home. We let our Shepherd be with the body for a few minutes before we went outside to perform the burial. The Shepherd approached sniffed and sniffed some more. We thought she might understand. Later that day she acted restless and was looking for her 'sister'. She acted confused when we invited her to go out in tbe yard alone and went to bed alone. It's been 3 days and our surviving dog is eating less and while being just as needy as ever she is now sitting in her doggy bed in the living room instead of at our feet and occasionally goes and sits in the terriers doggy bed which is still here. She gets it but not completely. It's a process that we know is going to take some time to adjust to. I recommended we get another small dog to keep the routine and familiarity going but my wife says it's too soon. Just a note that I was preparing for this last year by trying to get the shepherd bred but it never took. I was planning to add a puppy into the mix to soften the blow for the shepherd because our Terriers prognosis last October wasn't good.

    Thanks for this video. I wish more people were educated about the health problems in brachy breeds and some other breeds too. There was an English Bulldog in my neighborhood who "snored" a lot while walking (slowly) out with her family... and, sadly, people thought it was cute. The one Frenchie in my neighborhood has lots of health problems. His owner has done a pretty good job addressing them, but still he has skin issues (hair loss, etc), for a while had a spinal issue (seems better now), and recently had one eye removed and is mostly blind in the remaining eye.

    Unfortunately, I hope it won't be long before you have to remake this video yet again! They really need to change this no dogs under 6 months of age nonsense, especially if they are coming from a country that is "safe" in terms of rabies. While I applaud the CDC for changing this and cleaning up the mess they had, they still need to work on it. I haven't heard of any dogs important into the U. S that have brought in any diseases or issues. Many breeders import puppies, rescue groups bring in dogs under 6 months. And don't say "just wait" on those little rescue dogs until they're 6 months of age. Those little rescue dogs will be dead by that time.

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner Před 3 dny

      Unfortunately, there are many 'rescues' who are forging paperwork and I've encountered so very many dogs from these situations. It's a huge mess. As I mentioned in the video from last week, the CDC is noting a 150% increase in dogs with rabies being brought into the USA. So there is a real issue here, and obviously protecting animals and people from rabies is very important. However, my argument is that the CDC has gone about this in a very poorly thought out manner... This latest change is much 'better', but it still punishes people who have very legitimate reasons for importing a dog that is younger than 6mo of age. I'm hopeful that the next update video will include positive news 🤞

    We had covid thank God my animals didnt. I could not get my animals to wear a mask no matter how hard i tried. Any ideas? Do they have any animal masks?

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner Před 4 dny

      No, there aren't any safe/effective masks for species other than humans at this point. That's why it's so important to have HEPA filters running in your home, and to have the humans wear properly fitting masks whenever they are sick and whenever they are around people outside of the home.

    • @Karen-wo2yk
      @Karen-wo2yk Před 4 dny

      @VetMedCorner if ur sick wearing a mask aren't u breathing in all ur sickness? Can't be good when I wore a mask my asthma got so bad. My pulmonologist said I didn't have too. When I had covid no way was I suffocating myself in my own germs.

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner Před 4 dny

      No, you aren't breathing in all your sickness, that's not how respirators work. At all. Sounds like your pulmonologist is not current on their research. Here's a video explaining how respirators work: czcams.com/video/ahX27q83Nek/video.htmlsi=yfKIk034c41giSg- ETA - wearing a properly fitted mask while sick protects both you and the people/animals who have to be around you. Wearing one when you aren't sick reduces the risks of getting yourself sick and reduces the risks of bringing home illness to the people and animals you live with.

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner Před 5 dny

      You haven't done what is discussed in the video because the dog isn't being heavily reinforced for eliminating outside, and also isn't being supervised appropriately inside so is eliminating inside as well. You'll need to make those changes, and as I mention in the video, be consistent for a good month without any indoor eliminating before considering a slight relaxation in supervision.

    apologies for commenting on an older video, but i have a question after watching. i've struggled for about two years with one of my dogs eating from the litter box. i admittedly don't scoop every time that the cat voids; usually once or twice daily. to combat the dog problem, i purchased "furniture" that conceals the litter box. it's a three-sectioned cabinet with a center entrance for accessing two side cabinets at the back. my cat moves freely in and out & my large dog is blocked from accessing the litter box. there is also a motion-activated light so that my cat is not using his box in darkness. the side cabinet doors open to allow me to scoop easily. on occasion, the cat will open the cabinet door from the inside, which does give the dog litter access if the room is open (it's a cat only room via cat gate when humans are not home), but i feel better knowing that my dog isn't eating the clay, urine, or feces & that my cat can void without the dog hovering impatiently waiting to grab a snack afterwards. my cat seems to use the "hidden" litter box without issue. my question: was it a bad idea?

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner Před 8 dny

      From this description, it's tough to know. The 'issue' with covering litter box locations are twofold. First, it will trap odour, which the cats tend to find off-putting as they tend to be fastidiously clean. As an analogy, I tend to think about how I don't want my bathroom to smell of urine or feces and how much I dislike it when it does smell. The second issue is that cats tend to prefer being able to watch the environment when they are vulnerable (ie eating, drinking, eliminating). That's why we should give them litter box locations that allow them to watch the environment while they eliminate as that helps them be comfortable in the box. When I have a situation where my dog wants to help themselves to a litter box I will tend to block off the rooms the boxes are in (use baby gates or cat flaps or something else that allows the cat in easily but keeps the dog out). In situations where that isn't possible, I would consider a tall sided clear large tote that doesn't have a lid on it, with cat entrances and exits cut into the sides as that would still allow for the cat to monitor the environment while they eliminate. ETA - never worry about commenting on an older video, that's totally fine! I may miss some of those comments due to the number of them, but if I see them I do try to reply where I can!

    Bro FINALLY i can start figuring out why my orange mutt cat is so twitchy. I'll have to save up for a vet visit but I'm 99% he has this and maybe hip pain that sets it off. I used to have him in a much smaller apartment and his episodes were much worse, and i always thought it was maybe something seizure adjacent. He's never really had skin issues or fleas and the twitching/rolling itself is centered like, below his shoulder blades around his ribs instead of near the tail, he grooms that spot like CRAZY when it's acting up. sometimes he'll calm down and come lay with me and he's just soaking wet on both sides 😭but the clip of the little tortie cat freaking out you used is literally exactly what he does, down to the 'seeing ghosts' face and way she bounces around after nothing. fingers crossed it's just this and not a tumor or other seizure disorder!

    Hello, I adopted my cat last year and she was being caged and mistreated in her past 9 years of life… She used to have these symptoms, and sometime ear and head twitching (like focal seizures), and the vets and I also thought that would be some psychological issues, and she got better from time to time… Until now, she got serious gastroenteritis two weeks ago, and was having cerinia, cyproheptadine/ mirtazapine for more than a week, and even have to give her gabapentin if I bring her to the vet. After having the med I found her always being very tired and those FHS symptoms getting significantly worse, I have told my vet she seems to have focal seizures with the med and if it this because of the med and he just asked me to reduce the dosage of the med… I have stopped giving her the medicines for two days, her energy level is much better but those FHS symptoms are still quite serious… Should I be worried?

    Pugs have many similar features to the french bulldog and are also unhealthy. What makes the French bulldog less healthy than the pug? Is it the fixed mutations mentioned in the video?

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner Před 14 dny

      You are absolutely correct - frankly every brachycephalic breed is rife with health issues, and there is research from the UK about pug health issues in particular. The French Bulldog has a shorter lifespan due to more frequent, and more severe, health issues. I suspect this is partially because of breed popularity leading to more unethical/poor breeding of the French Bulldog along with the fixed genetic mutations and the severity of the brachycephaly. However, I don't have research to prove that, it's my educated opinion based on the research we do have and my clinical experience.

    In your experience, why do you think these dogs are still so popular? When you see these dogs in clinic, are the owners not aware of their health issues? Do they think the health problems are less serious than they are? I just struggle to understand how they remain so popular when they are so obviously unhealthy. It can't just be that they look cute, almost every dog looks cute! They could get a different cute dog!

      Excellent question, I've thought about this a lot. I wasn't able to find any specific research studies on this precise question, so take my theories as just that. I think it's a combination of people wanting to be a part of a fad, unethical breeders prioritizing money over animal welfare, and a lack of education. As I note in the video, most people think these dogs and their suffering is 'cute', instead of understanding (or caring about?) the reality of what's going on. Additionally, by the time they see me in the clinic, it's too late. They already have the dog. That's a big part of why I made this specific video, I want people to find the info *before* they choose a dog to add to their family. I fully agree with you, there are many dogs who are far cuter, who can breathe, and who have reasonable lifespans. We should be supporting ethical breeders for those breeds!

      It truly is. I also feel so incredibly sad when I see them after surgeries, fully alert and responsive, with their breathing tube still in. Animals that can breathe immediately want the tube out as they wake up, but the brachycephalic dogs breathe better with the tube in... So we leave them intubated for as long as possible. It's incredibly upsetting 😞

I absolutely hate it when animals suffer/have poor welfare. I find it incredibly distressing. Breeders/confirmation show judges/industry have had a long time to course correct and prioritize the welfare of the animals... But haven't. So I suppose that it needs to be legislated, for the sake of the animals.

    My cat has a nasal tumour and was on high dose of steroids. She stopped eating and would attempt to drink but seemed she couldnt. She tried to sleep but seemed she couldnt. She was pacing and crying for over 3 days and 3 nights. Vet said she was likely senile and not distressed or in pain when she did it few weeks previous after her blocked teared duct burst. I wanted her pts at the time but was convinced it wasnt the tumour but dementia. Although my vet didnt see any videos. She said if they are in pain they tend to not pace and cry but instead lay there and maybe hide. She also said that she would be constantly rubbing or pressing her face if she was in pain. I let my cats goes days of pacing and crying, she wore herself out. I had to syringe water and supplements in her until I could see my usual vet. By day three she was doing more pitiful cries. Like she was fed up. She would lay on her side trying to sleep but would suddenly lift head and do pitiful and fed up cry. She would change position have just flop down. By day 4 when I took her to see vet, she noticed her eye had tilted where the tumour had likely grown in muscle behind eye. She agreed then that is was likely the tumour. I left her all that time, thinking it was dementia and she was unaware. I even slept in another room when she needed me most because I want sleep. She cried outside the door and weed on the little bed I had there. Which was unusual. I'm barely sleeping and struggle to eat. I'm overwhelmed with guilt at the thought she had suffered so long and i ignored her pleas for help. Because i was convinced she was totally unaware due to dementia I've since learnt dementia usually is a night thing. Her memory seemed fine too. Her pacing and cries were loud and despite being an indoor cat with garden access only. She was constantly looking up at top of fence looking like she was going to attempt to climb fence and escape. Which she wouldnt have been able to do. I will share link of video I have of her in garden on the night before her pts. Her eyes looked not tilted here but couple hours later is when I noticed it looked strange. In the video she was more worn out and her cries because quieter. But for days she was crying louder. If you watch it and at the end she comes toward camera after attempting but not drinking. She does do a quieter cry in this one and wish I recorded when she was louder first few days. Before wearing herself down. If you look at her face. What would see? There is a video in that playlist with her twitching her head. That was from week previous and I was concerned so shown video and vet said she wasnt concerned because its seen in older animals and not tumour or pain related. It went on for hours but did lessen. m.czcams.com/play/PLquDR4q6oBotFxhaF-W44YAI0S_JlwqqG.html Please could you advice if from the garden video, if she was in pain. Just be aware she was drained by this point and not got videos of her when her cries were louder and more distressing. m.czcams.com/play/PLquDR4q6oBotFxhaF-W44YAI0S_JlwqqG.html

    This is very interesting. We used to feed our Boxers Purina Pro Plan shredded and they never had issues. Now I have a little rescue Chi/yorkie mix (or at least we think that is what she is) and I have been feeding her that ToTW. I'm thinking of going back to Purina Pro, especially seeing it's on the WASVA approved list. Just curious, but what do you feed your lovely pooch? I saw your video about the DNA testing and that was really interesting!

    • @VetMedCorner
      @VetMedCorner Před 17 dny

      Unfortunately, ToTW does not meet WSAVA guidelines and is causing nutritionally related heart issues (ie daDCM aka nDCM). If your dog has been eating this for over 6mo you should see a veterinary cardiologist for an ultrasound of your dog's heart to screen for DCM. I've fed my dogs a variety of formulas from a variety of companies (all that meet WSAVA guidelines), depending on what their current needs are. My current dog is a Labrador who would eat as much as she could find. She also had an elbow injury, and now has mild bilateral OA in her elbows. As a result, she is currently eating Royal Canin Satiety + Mobility. But what's best for my individual dog would not be best for every dog and the specific formulas you should consider depends on their age, lifestyle, body condition score, and medical history.
