Fun fact: I told my therapist that I think of my anxiety like another voice in my head that makes me feel bad. She then suggested "Hey, try taking the authority away from the voice! As someone who's done puppetry professionally, it's worth noting that the level of personality and emotion they're getting out of the main characters is *extremely* hard to do, especially since they aren't using the Muppet style of overly animated or energetic movement, or with any moving parts other than arms and mouth. Mad respect for the puppeteers and puppet masters
Ikr I aspire for that level of expression and precision. Incredible how skilled the team behind this is, wish it was more recognized
Duck Guy’s eyelids do move, but other than that, they are pretty simple puppets.
i think that’s less of the puppeteering and more based on the writing. the script and pacing of the show fit the lack of facial dynamic, etc.
the red puppet is uncanny sometimes, it probably takes a lot of skill to move that one

It seems that they’ve moved from gore horror to psychological horror and honestly I’m loving it
With hints of comedy
This could just be me. But I feel the reason why their as much gore as their was in the web series was because of limitations. But I dunno. It could just the me.
I think they use gore or implicated gore as a method of shock or to ramp up the tone of the show in the final act of an episode, which they don't commonly do and I appreciate that. Like you said they rely on psychological horror like in the first episode they live out their lives fully, only to realize they're still in the montage of a song that's yet to be finished. And that is brilliant.
It was always psycholgical
Well they used both in this series. But this gore is more humorous.
I love how Red Guys just so patient with Yellow lmao. The last episode Yellows just throwing all the dishes away and Red just calmly explains "...they go in the cupboard" and just before the big blowup in episode 4 he stands up for Yellow and tries to get Duck to back off. Not to mention that when Yellow forgets the password, instead of getting outraged he just asks him to try to remember, even if hes still mildly frustrated.

Holy shit, you too? I thought it was just me that worried about that.
i always feared my stuffed animals and dolls were alive (anything that had eyes basically) i was afraid to treat any of them poorly because i thought they'd seek revenge. id like to think that I'm no longer afraid of that as an adult now, however i now fear spiders and insects want to seek revenge if i kill one of their buddies.

I love how Stain is a genuinely inspiring person to be around to the point where the group would be better off with him, but they don’t want to accept him as a replacement for Duck, who just harasses and talks down to everyone around him.
So they just slowly turn him into Duck until it leads to his death.
Stain deserved better tbh
Are we sure Stain was the one that died? I wouldn't put it past them to kill off the original Duck and with where they were standing when the murder happened, it very well could have been the real Duck.
@@48BoxerI just noticed that too. Stain was on the left originally and then stain was on the left with the shovel while the real duck was on the right
@@makerflaker8358also at 46:37 you can see maggots in the decapitated Duck's blood. Stain wouldn't have maggots in them, they haven't been buried like the original Duck was.
What’s even more disturbing to think about is at that point, does even matter if the real duck was the one that died? They basically turned Stain into duck already, so much that if he really did kill the real duck, he’s already become duck enough to the point that stain is long gone. Quite trippy to think about
My heart actually sank when duck pulled yellow's batteries out. They were so close.
The book going into the shredder, seeing it take the last chance for these creatures to... I don't know, do *something,* it filled me with dread.
that part made me probably the most frustrated ive ever been when watching a series lol
but yeah it sucked that it just ended on a cliffhanger. a cool detail i also noticed is that in every episode, there's always one of them who's more slightly more sane/aware of the things happening around (like with duck in the first, red driving the car in transportation, and in the last episode)
I think it’s crazy how this went from a kickstarter with 3-8 minutes of gory horror to a 20-30 minute tv show
honestly it's more funny than anything

Even after years, DHMIS is scarier and more psychologically distressing than most horror movies. Just says a lot about how much care and detail the creators have.
That's because most horror movies rely on cheap jumpscares that are supported by poorly written stories. That's why I often find myself saying "I dont like horror." when thats not really true, its just that horror is rarely done well, which is a pity because just look at this show
Most horror movies rely of physical scared then distressing types of scares and that's what tends to make DHMIS so scary is how it doesn't look scary but when the blood and gore shows up it's more so distressing to you to see
Yeah the horror in this series is more of the implications that make it so scary then the gore like makes it better

"And I look like a smart boy in my outfit"
My favourite line from Red
I realized that after the teachers do their part or before it, they are always nice.
Colin during his song he was very violent when they touched him, then glitched them out. Then during the friendship episode, he didn't care and gave them a gift.
Larry drowned Yellow guy in the dream song. He then comforted yellow in the death episode.
Tony aged them so bad in his song, but in the transport episode he was really nice to the electric dude to tell him not to waste his time because they left.
Sketch, after her song, she said not to be creative again, warning them.
It seems now they have free will before and after their time to shine, as they are basically useless to Lesley.
They all seemed to warn them in their own way in each song, like
Larry seemingly (to me) was showing yellow everything that happened so far so he can realize in his song.
Sketch, like I said, after her song to never be creative again to warn them. Yellow guy in that also said "I am going to paint a picture of a clown!" But sketch immediately destroyed it. In Colin's song, you can hear a robot voice say "I am going to paint a picture of a clown. Your not invited to a party" so those two are connected.. It can show that yellow guy is like a robotic, and we know he has batteries.
Tony said in his song that there is no future, as they are always on the same day and being repeated.
Everything is connected.
Yeah, try and keep up maaaaaaate 😏
Meat guy cuz in a certain headcannon, duck swears at yellow guy
A shame that Shrignold didn’t have a cameo like the other teachers. Perhaps in a future season.

"I'M NOT GOING BACK INTO THAT HOUSE!!"
Felt that line from Red more than any others. He clearly has serious truama from being a prisoner in the house and that line is when it all boils over for him. And the tragedy is he both saw that "freedom" isn't any better than the guilded cage and didn't even get to choose which one to be in because Lesley throws him back in the prison anyway.
That's actually really simular to how a teenager with extremely strict parents would feel. Their parents just coddle them in a environment that never changes, and often once they leave to be on their own, they find that freedom isn't any better.

I've seen a lot of people saying that Red Guy seems to be the least aware of the trio's situation, but that's not true at all, and I'm not sure how y'all're coming to that conclusion. He's more aware of their situation than either of the others, and it greatly affects his character.
The way I see it, the 'he's oblivious idea' is a misinterpretation of two of his main character traits:
*1.)* Red Guy is resistant to and questioning of a lot of the weirdness they deal with, with one exception; he will happily roll with whatever gets him the fuck out of the Nightmare House.
> Ep.1 - Being in Upper Management in a boring factory gave him a stable environment and a means to avoid the Nightmare House, so it was able to latch onto him easily.
> Ep.3 - He was enthusiastic about the family lessons and the idea that he had a 'real family' out there, because he was wishing that they could rescue him from this, in his own screaming words from Ep.4's opening, "actual nightmare". I feel that he was only so eager to dump his friends because he hoped it meant he could finally escape.
> Ep.5 - He finally Had Enough and decided to take matters into his own hands. He could have easily left on his own, but Ep.3 made him realize that the other two weirdos he's trauma-bonded with are his family and if there's something better out there, he's bringing them, too.
*2.)* Red Guy's main coping mechanism for dealing with things he can't change is to Avoid Thinking About It.
> Ep.2 - Bird Guy is dead and after realizing this means that he's never coming back, Red Guy promptly focuses on anything but his own grief (which means putting down Yellow Guy's grief in the process,) which eventually turns into trying to make a replacement Bird Guy so he can pretend nothing is wrong.
> Ep.3 - His family doesn't like him and he's immediately the odd one out. He's gone as quick as he came, unceremoniously dumped back into the house. All his hope and optimism was for nothing. He Does Not Want To Talk About It.
> Ep.6 - Just... look at the end of Ep.5. He tries to be optimistic for Yellow Guy before breaking down into quiet crying, holding himself and rocking. This man is broken. In Ep.6 he throws himself fully into the horrible strangeness. He's given up. The Red Guy before Ep.5 would have been so happy that someone else was questioning the reality around them, but when Yellow Guy's batteries are changed, Red Guy is so terrified of what the horrible truths behind their garish personal hell could be that he blatantly tells Duck Guy to ignore it and throws himself into the teacher's lesson.
So, no, he's not oblivious. He's painfully aware and it's taken a horrible mental toll on the guy.
Someone hug this poor bastard, he's fucking terrified.

And then came the announcement that it was basically UK exclusive.
Turns out, the show is incredible and I can just watch it here. Very happy :))
A few details:
- you can see Unemployed Brendan's script in the trash throughout later episodes
- the paper that contains news about Green Ducks death mentions Warren the eagle getting fired
- the apple that tries to sing but gets eaten by the twins falls off a tree in the background during Green Ducks funeral
- you can see the house the show takes place in located in yellow guys ear implying the show takes place in his head
- the business that warrens friends wouldn't invest in is the pizza place he's trying to convince the guys to visit for a restaurant style meal (one of the pamphlets he shows them is for "Worm Pizza")
- Toddney and Lily's grandmother is actually the last person to serve as their mother, the tea they serve causes people to mutate
- Roy can usually be seen when the weather gets stormy (he's one of the neighbors looking out the window during Yellow guys community fantasy)
- the Green Duck that gets offed is surrounded by maggots meaning Stain duck is the one that lived
-the picture with Dr. Bushman's diagnosis clearly show yellow guy is battery powered
- the symbols on the book Leslie gives yellow guy appear through the entire show
Another good one is the recurring motif of there being multiple ducks
Like when stain edwards replaces duck, in family when duck sings about being his own family and in electricity where Leslie talks about always having "extras". When she opens the draw though its all ducks
You deserve an award for this. Thank you
Thank you!
Someone should make time stamps for all these.

I love the different representations of family
Ducks:being cutoff from the family
Red guy:being estranged from the family
Yellow guy:being the victim of a abusive family
honestly this series really leans into the subtle and unintentional existential dread kid's shows used to give me. Even when I was a kid I kinda hated how the characters could never actually leave their sets and houses, maybe sometimes they'd have special episode where they would switch up the set or something but they usually only pretended to experience the world they were trying to teach about. One that sticks out to me is the Upside Down Show. As charming and lovable as it is, most of the episodes are the main characters trying to leave their impossible surreal house to get somewhere in the real world. It gave me a feeling of dread and discomfort, maybe the hard parallel between the surreal puppets and the real world is what really kicked it into uncanny for me. regardless, i think the use of playful child like imagery is used very purposefully and effectively in this series
All this existential dread is giving me acid flashbacks
I used to watch Upside Down Show and I used to hate opening doors that I can’t see the other side of and I didn’t think it would be connected
i used to watch the upside down show too, i loved that show but it always gave me an uncomfortable feeling when the rooms they would go in also had puppets or other dimensional aspects to it, making it seem like their world is just all a facade in a way, and at the end of each episode then they would find their way into the real world
Shane and David experience existential dread for the very first time!
Oh my god shut up
If there has ever been a series I was eager to watch a multiple hours long "behind the scenes" episode about, this is it. The animation techniques coming in motion, the writers' room, character design sessions, the storyboard workshops, or even recording the voiceover... geez, what a creative ride it would be!
I feel so bad for yellow guy in the transport episode. He seems so naive although it's pretty clear that he has his own desire. He just wants a community and I'm guessing he's the representation of a kid that cant make decisions for himself and just goes along and accepts everything Red and Duck say because he's afraid of making others unhappy.

I love how they play on the "one adorable little girl having fun among the cute puppets" trope by having a creepy grown-up woman as the only human character.
I think the subversion is the uncanny puppets are the scared confused ones while the flesh lady is acting creepy and absurd.

1:37:05 I like the detail of how he says “this is our- where we are” instead of “this is our house/home”. It just shows that he also, like red guy, does not think of this place as a home, rather just a place he is.
It’s also just really funny
1:45:43 "look how excited im getting"
i think duck had a different kind of excitement in mind with the way he looked down
why
Red's emotion at 1:54:31 was actually real in my opinion. It's like he couldn't handle going back 2 that house and if he did then he'd go insane since he's stuck there most of the time. He was desperate 2 go anywhere but that house and I feel sry 4 him. (Red is literally my favorite character in DHMIS cuz he's the most aware of things that go on around him and also cuz I think he would have the potential 2 break the loop and put an end 2 whatevers pulling the strings in DHMIS.)
@Deer Lord yeah, I think it was by accident.
Pretty sure the most that Red Guy knows is that they are trapped.
There’s a pretty nice theory about it all!
The other elements that the characters are most aware of are the fakeness and the danger
YellowGuy is the one attributed with the former in the theory, but Duck has completely refused the realities pressured onto him multiple times now. he’s probably connected with “knowing they’re in danger” from how much he, ykno, dies
I’m just so happy they’re all fully realized characters now!
Can’t decide who my favorite is bc of how much each member adds. It really is the three of them
@@sammygecko_ I really don't know since I'm not a hardcore DHMIS fan. I just personally think since he's the most aware, he could put an end 2 it. But idk 4 sure.
i don’t think they’re self aware, i just think they were forgotten or something. they seem to be in Leslie’s head or something, with the only way for Leslie to progress/accept what happened is to climb up that 5th flight of stairs after a hug from yellow guy.
Y R U speaking like dat
[28:15/1:52:22]
I love how even though the show is batshit crazy and nonsensical. There's still a level of consistency even to the subtlest of details. In the "Death" episode, The Shepherds Pie recipe requires a "Rat Egg", now you'd initially see this as a mispronunciation of "Raw Egg" or an absurdist joke about needing the egg of a rat. But when we see Yellow Guy's dream sequence about living in a new neighborhood, The Narrator directly mentions the bird given by the neighbor as a "Rat" thus explaining the recipe being twisted in Leslie's perspective not a mispronunciation or absurdist humor.
And Yellow Guy's maiden name is "rat eyes"
@@coarte8242 DUDEE FRR
A little baby pigeon...
Furthermore, when yellow guy describes Warren’s eyes as looking like those of a rat. Yellow is actually saying that his eyes look similar to those of a bird. Such as an eagle who’s wings are taking a little longer to sprout.
Damn people in this fandom are really observant I absolutely love it keep it going guys :DD
I really enjoyed the approach to dark comedy they took the show with, it’s absolutely hilarious.
Duck is my favorite character, his sassy personality makes me laugh out loud every time without fail 😂
The fact that the intro keeps on slowly getting darker and darker is just so good
we live in an actUAL NIGHTMAAAAARE
@@alfonshedstrom9859 it's true
Only thing about this I don't like is they took away that auto-tune effect from duck's voice. Other than that, I love it
That isn't an effect, the voice actor can just do that with his voice! You can see him doing it on an interview
@@charliecaulfield6472 can you please tell me what interview that is? I can’t find anything about this series
@@charliecaulfield6472 they mean in the original episodes
Hmm, I agree. But also Bobby? What are you doing here!? /j
OMG thank you for the comment
This is so unsettling and charming and horrific and funny at the same time
Briefcase: "A big guy like (red)?"
Duck: "Hes not that big."
Self conscious of something are we duck?
Duck is also the shortest one, makes sense
what scared me the most from all these episodes is the fact that roy still appears at the end of the credits and as well him making appearances in some episodes.
His eye is visible peering in through the drywall during the opening.
Can you time stamp all of his appearances?
@@cringegirlartist1164 1:08:38 in the window
What’s interesting is that Roy seems unwelcome on the show now. The twins insult him, Red Guy kicks him out of the car, his sightings look as though he’s hiding rather than in control, hell he even disguises himself to tag along after the gang takes Episode 5’s plot off the rails.
Seems that whoever’s in charge now clearly doesn’t want Roy to be involved. And he’s not happy about it.
53:14 I feel like the chair falling over happened on accident and I love that
I notice new details every time I rewatch this. The amount of care and artistry put into this series is incredible.
01:19:40 - The pie chart and "nothing" being references to the original web series
01:27:15 - There's a decoration in the background that looks like Yellow's ear
A lot more I can't remember off the top of my head. A lot of things that should've been obvious on the first viewing but flew over my head because there's just so much going on in every single frame, and so much to digest with the dialogue and the underlying themes. I love this show.
I like how the main characters are calling out the stupid unnecessary things the weird characters do
The "did that fall out of your anus?" Kills me every time
Unironically couldn’t stop laughing at how suddenly dark duck gets when he puts the bread child in the toaster when it’s mom denies him the role of the father in her family lol.
Jesus... The scream at 1:52:37 is so blood curdling and genuine.

It made me so scared it was so realistic they did such a good job

The worst because i laugh at this part and i didn know the story for now i know the story make this got creepy

I remember watching these as a kid and being terrified but now as a 23 year old adult you realize how deep and philosophical this show was/is. It hides its deeper themes under a creepy child like theme. A true form of art.
You know, for people who claim to be starving, Lilly and Toddney sure don't mind wasting food at the beginning of the family episode.
Brain friends before it goes dark is literally the most kid friendly part of the whole series

Pretty impressive they made the main trio an actual cast with their own character and dynamics like wow
In transport red guy's voice actor played the part so well it's genuinely sounded like the voice actor was experiencing actual pain tbh
i love the fact that if keeps referencing everything being a loop. that they are always being told how or what to do by something, that they are always in the same place, that yellow guy has memories of when he had gone up stairs before and met the bigger ones, but doesn't remember. it feels like duck is the only one oblivious to it, yellow guy is the only one with the answer, and red guy feels miserable with the current situation, and knows something ids wrong.
All three of them can tell when something is wrong, just in different ways.
Red Guy is the first to call out stuff or be antagonistic to the teachers, but rarely does anything substantial. He knew the score when he and Roy ran the show, but now he feels trapped, confused and helpless.
Yellow Guy seems to cryptically “get it” sometimes, but he’s too immature for it to stick. He’s easily distracted, and the teachers abuse this.
Duck Guy knows when danger is coming and will usually be the first to point it out. As the only hired member of the cast, he may know more than he lets on - but unfortunately, he learned a long time ago not to go off-script.
@@TheSpaceCommunist that last part, were you referring to the first episode 5?
I’ve watched this at least once a day almost every day since October 2022. Hyper fixated is an understatement. So many Easter eggs I’m still finding new ones. I love this thank you so much for the upload
The way we all ignore the Lamp’s bit about dead people coming back as their favorite object or animal when all of the teachers are objects or animals.
Can't forget the main 3 of course
yeah, I noticed that too! everything that's an object may have been someone Lesley knew and they likely died, but got put in the body of an object to teach the main three what she wants them to know, and they might be able to move on.
the lamp mentions a group of sorts, which could be the versions of the main 3 in the upper levels with Lesley determining if they deserve to go on. clearly, that's not how it works though because they still have to come back, but they still end up contradicting what they had said previously because they likely know they will never "do it right."

I love how a big part of this show's horror is taking very human experiences, like family, and defining them to the point where they feel dull and monotonous. It makes you feel like instead of those events being an essential part of life, it's instead just another thing to do on your agenda. It gives the show an uncanny valley like feel in a sense that you know what's going on but you feel no emotion towards it. You're left with the husk of something that you should be relating to, which is reminiscent of the expressionless puppets they use on this show.
the existential dread and the longing for normalcy ever-present in this series is unparalleled.
Nothing's ever okay in DHMIS.

this is one of the first youtube videos that has made me genuinely laugh and feel scared in a while. All the subtle humor with cut off screams and references of previous dhmis' especially the pesky bee are funny to me. Whenever the characters raised their voice suddenly it made me feel scared like when the neighbor announcer screamed at the car crash and when the producer raised her voice.
this show has had moments that have genuinely disturbed me and made me feel so uncomfortable, but it's still such a phenomenal and witty show. i love the direction they went from it and i really hope they continue.
