Message from Nito:
"Hi everyone! ヽ( ´ ∇ ` )ノ
Thank you so much for watching this video and for giving me lots of fantastic heartwarming comments!🥰
Right now, I have been running the Kickstarter campaign to secure the development of my game Pull Stay.
I would really appreciate it if you check my campaign and back my 3 years long passion project.
If I can have a lot of backers, it will give me not only financial stability but also give me powerful leverage to negotiate with business people in the future, like porting to cosoles and such.
I really want to change my life with this game. Only your support can make it real. Thanks a million! ヽ(≧∀≦)ノ"

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is Nito reading a script?
Yes. Nito wrote his answers out in English since he is not quite conversational. He uses grammarly when he writes, so he won't sound quite natural. I wanted him to speak Japanese, but he felt it was too embarrassing if Japanese people watched it.
How does Nito afford to live?
Hikikomori are usually supported by family. In Nito's case he was originally supported by his Aunt, but is currently living off his savings from Doujin sales.
How does Nito get groceries, haircuts, etc?
Nito gets delivery for groceries. He leaves once every month or two for haircuts (and presumably yearly for the doctor).
Where can I find Nito's game?
Thanks to everyone who funded his Kickstarter campaign, Nito made $34,000 in sales! We're so happy that this video gained so much traction. Thank you to the kind people who donated to make it possible for him to finish and publish his game. Below are his links

Oh my gosh thank you so much!!! I just cant wait for this game to come out!
Thank you for such an interesting interview and to Nito also for participating.
I found it of note that he said he doesn’t feel lonely much. I think it’s because he is always keeping his mind occupied. He is always concentrating on his task which is a bit different than other hikikomori that I’ve seen. The other documentaries I’ve seen focus more on those who are mostly unable to take care of themselves and lack motivation to be productive. His case is a bit different.
In terms of productivity it seems like he is more productive than a lot of social people I know..
I agree. I believe there is a saying "Those who have a why can overcome any 'how' "

I have a friend who have been Hikikomori for about 4 Years, he never get any job or go to college in his entire life. I was helping him to find a new job but he keep refused and ignoring me. One day i started my own small business selling street food, he was my first employee.
My God, i never thought he was really good at his job and helped my business to grow bigger, he even invented half of my store menu.
He spent his time at home researching new recipe for my store. Now i owe him big time. This Hikikomori people it's not useless or lazy they just don't trust other people and sometimes push themselves too hard. I would love to hire them as my employee and friends.
Thank you for being such a good friend. 👍
I hire my freinds too. 😁
Post a video of your store

Massive social anxiety or insecurity is what keep this talented people from doing what 'normal' people suppossed to do. I can say that seeking medications from psychiatrist or getting help from peers can change these people lives. Being shut in is a form of mental health issue, not "lazyness".

So its his fault that the work environment in Japan has got people killing themselves over how stressfull it is? Thats not to say that i support lazyness, but its not always the persons fault that theyre in the predicament theyre in, a lot of times these people make a genuine effort to break out of their shell, but it either takes a long time, or it unfortunately never happens, which is a darn shame @@Chadius_Thundercock
All people are "valuable" regardless of anything.
Hi im japanese. He is so much more talented than people who are concerned as HIKIKOMORI by "normal" japanese.
HIKIKOMORI we discussing(and criticizing in incredibly most of case) are people who earn to small money to live alone, of course no spouse, share the house with their parents due to they have no money.
Thus, the atmosphere in a house is dim and tense. Parents worry about their decendant, and HIKIKOMORI have a concern about future.
The case of worse, HIKIKOMORI can't do anything but sleeping and eating so totally depending on their parents, or in some case domestic violence are seen.
Moreover, the worst is the time their parents broke limit."dragger" will come home. dragger demolish the door and literally drag HIKIKOMORI out of house. Dragger promise their parents to make HIKIKOMORI suitable for japanese society. But who on earth can do so magical? In fact, some of HIKIKOMORI were found dead several monthes after.

@@thesunshinegirl_1343 look at the man, he isn't comfort with it, he's just made a habit of it. He is basically just living to survive at this point. He seems lonely and sadly gets very little interaction in the year even if he wants it. This may have started out as a comfort thing, but it has evolved into routine. He can't go out into society even if he wanted to because he would be shunned for his lifestyle.
I had very limited interaction for a solid 2 years and it sucked. You get sick of yourself, you don't know how to talk to people. You can't be understood because you're too low and mumble, you get flustered easily, you overthink anything that happens, you literally just sit for a while out of sheer boredom but you can't do anything about it so you just find a way to fill in the boredom.
Granted I never got to this level but I was able to last 7-12 hours a day without saying a single word, which is not normal. I have gotten much better at it now over the last few years and I am so much happier in general nowadays.

"being alone for a while is dangerous. it’s addicting. once you see how peaceful it is, you don’t want to deal with people anymore"

shit, this cuts deep
Very unhealthy!!! I don’t like being around people but we’re community beings.
@@mrdave777 facts we are definitely social beings
@@iomd4527 yup, one thing I do struggle with though is staying in relationships. I got my friends I go out with and it’s nice to keep that social desire in check. But I’ve been along for so long that I know I’ll have to compromise on time with relationships. Hooking up really is the only thing I’ve been content with.
All I see is a very creative, talented person who isn’t interested in the rigid path society wants him to follow. That kind of independent spirit is highly valued in a lot of places and is nothing at all to be ashamed of. In fact, it’s unique people like this who make the most difference in this world.
I agree
I think it's more weird to conform to some arbitrary notion that having lots of friends and going out all the time is normal. It becomes mundane and routine just like any other lifestyle

Yes he isnt typical Hikikomori who hoarding garbage and only playing videogames , but by definition he is Hikikomori because he never or rarely leave his room
In japan, they has no self-employed term thus they called them hikikomori. You know.. That asian stereotype that they should get good grade to work at some high lvl company of some kind, thats why that self-employed is non-existent, atleast that stereotype is applied to east Asia region tho.
You obviously didn’t bother watching the full video. That was address near the end.
@@TheIncomingVirus1 i watches till the end. I said about the general Japanese opinion which they even said that stereotypical hikikomori is someone who is rely on their parents to live on, & all that. He graduated from the fucking University of Tokyo, I’d call him an elite
I don't understand why he apologizes for eating a snack. That made me sad. He's so intelligent, talented, and humble. Please eat as many snacks as you're hungry for, sir.
societal shame, it's not just a japanese thing but certainly more pronounced there. He doesn't generate income, or, in his own understanding, contribute to society. I'm guessing he feels guilt and shame for just existing at this point. Which likely makes it all the more difficult to go out and interact with other people.
@@louismendes4743 that has ruined my day
@@louismendes4743 I'm sure you're right. Honestly, my heart hurts for all the men all over the world who feel like they're worth nothing if they're not making a lot of money. It's a capitalistic lie that causes isolation and suicide.
@@flowerface3913 I don't think capitalism is solely to blame.
All throughout human history, adult males would be ostracized if they didn't contribute. I think because of that, the guilt is more of a deep-seeded instinct, felt by all men, regardless of culture.
@@Fermion. the suffering of all people can be traced back to misunderstanding, randomness, or greed. Most commonly greed.
Greed is the root of capitalism.
So when I say capitalism, I don't mean the few modern systems that actually claim that title openly.
I mean the system of greed that's been killing humans and the planet since long before the Industrial Revolution.
He's talented in art, game design, and programming. He supports himself and doesn't mooch of public assistance. I don't see a problem really. I mean isolation can be a sign of an issue but only if it severely effects ones ability to live their life. Nito seems to be satisfied with how he's living.
If he is cool with it….it’s fine. But often it stems from the insane pressure of social and work culture in Japan, which could put even those with normal mental health may despair, be beaten down and end up self isolating. And in a less harsh culture, many would prefer more social interactions or friendships.
The work culture in Japan is so difficult that if you graduate in a bad economic year and don’t get a job within a year of graduation, you are often shunned by the professional work force for the rest of your life, as there is a strong preference for hiring new grads only.
And even if employed, there are strict hierarchies in which more senior workers or managers are rarely questioned (ironically, Japan work places often use outdated tech like faxes and older software, as their is resistance to change). Then add in grueling work hours, a culture of public shaming for any mistakes, etc (or so say some YT videos, O don’t know personally).

I found it interesting when he said he's not the misanthrope type.
While not on a hikikomori level, I do like to keep to myself. I've spent many years trying to branch out socially, without much luck. Like Nito, it's not really driven by a dislike of others. It's just that whenever I do go out, I eventually started asking myself: "Was that better than staying at home, petting my cat and playing some video games?" The answer is almost always "No."

I find it quite admirable how after failing many times and being told he's a failure by his society, Nito continues to alter his work strategy and never gives up. I think that is what it's all about at the end of the day.
I had severe social anxiety and didn’t leave my house for 7 years, now I’m 23 and recently I lost 80lbs and pushed myself to do my driving lessons and got a car and now I have started college. I’m slowly but surely getting better and getting my life back.

Entering and graduating from the university of Tokyo is definitly not by chance at any means. I don't know what to say about Nito's life but life is always unpredictable. No one can really predict what's gonna happeen in the next few years, good or bad. However, I truly admire the attitude of Nito, he's definitly living a not so easy life. Still, he just keep working on his projects and looking forward to his future. That's amazing, it is not something a loser would do, he's gonna make it one day. Wish you the best Nito!
