I think hikkikomori are simply people with autisn or Asperger's. Japanese society is loud, pverly broght, overdemanding in terms of communication and adhering to social expectations, and the work hours are long and offices have open plans with no privacy so you're always staring the bext guy in the face. Plus forced socialisation late into the night drinking. I think this culture is toxic especially to people with ASD. And it makes perfect abd total sense for those who are able to become hikikomori. In my 5 year stint in japan, i went from excited to pretty much hiding in my apartment and coming out only wuen necessary or when it was possible to escape the fuss of tokyo. I realise now that as an aspie, self diagnosed, this is an impossible situation for me. And i cant be my best self. I think the best solution for hikikomori is to leave Japan and go to a country with a cukture thay better suits their needs.

What a miserable excuse for a life
Japanese society is a tough place for empathetic people. So it's why creative types typically become shut-ins. In the work place especially it's pretty brutal. Constant high expectations, competition, mobbing, etc. Imagine a society where many companies and businesses operate with expectations of those you'd typically find on wall street, Japan is sort of like that.

This guy is living my ideal life. I also never leave the house if I'm able. I'm in education only online but I prefer solitude over the harsh outside world. I don't leave the house for weeks at a time and I'm way happier then I was being around people.
