I remember having CP24 in the background in the morning while staying at a hotel and John Tory literally attended and gave speeches at three different cultural events in three different places in the city all before noon lol While Rob Ford was the customer service mayor (personally returning phone calls to indiviudal constituents) John Tory was the community outreach mayor attending any and all cultural and city events
Yeah, I've probably watched 20 hours of him Torying around town at this point and he fundamentally "did his job" of representing the city very well. If no other scandalous news hits, I get the sense that breaking that fundamental principle and the potential for a rolling cloud of bad representation is what prompted him to quit.
@@PaigeMTL Yeah and he was surprisingly on top of his brief. His politics and personal failings aside he always answered questions (including hosting a call-in show once a month pre-pandemic) and was able to give surprisingly detailed responses. He was like former British PM David Cameron in Prime Minister's Questions that way (again, despite the politics) but I think Toronto is ready to move on from someone (as you rightfully point out) was old Toronto establishment personified (including having a paid position on Rogers Communications). At least that's one nepo-baby down (there's still Ford and Trudeau lol)

@@Amir-jn5mo I think that may be to naked of a power grab move by Dougie and may feed into the conspiracy that he was behind the leaking of the Ford affair (though if the long-standing rumours are to be believed, dude shouldn't be throwing rocks in a house made of glass lol). I think if Michael Thompson hadn't had his own "improprities" to deal with, he probably would've been the backed candidate. I was surprised they didn't get a Ford to run in Ward 2-Etobicoke North during the last municipal election. You'd have thunk that they wouldn't let Rob's seat fall into non-Ford hands lol

lets go. Excited to see the rest of the series. You should also look into bill 23 i think that MPP Mike Shrier proposed to make 4 story housing as of right province wise and has been ignored by most media sadly.
While I wasn't a fan of Tory he did draft a great housing bill quickly into his new term which makes me sad now as to what the faith of this city is going to become now that he is gone.
Whoops I made a mistake in my comment. Seeings your video on bill 23, My last comment I meant bill 44 and 45 that was proposed by Mike has been under the radar. It's set to end exclusionary zoning province-wide, allow multiplexes of 4 units and 4 stories as of right everywhere and permit 6-11 story buildings on every major road. Obviously I haven't read the bill in detail so I would like to hear your take on it.

Loved the video. I really agree that it's not up to toronto to fix the housing problem. I think the issue is really dependent on the suburbs to accommodate much more density. Which means a stronger (and smarter) premier. The province needs to realize that infrastructure is needed to not just support the growth and the rate of growth, but to create better incentives to housing development, e.g. less parking, better parks, etc. Transit projects need to be based on need, not political maneuvering.
I always imagined Dougie gave Tory strong mayor powers on the hopes that he would basically run densification for him. Meanwhile in places like York Region, Dougie is firing MZOs at developments like RHC that are significantly more ambitious than what Richmond Hill is proposing.
At least they’re doing something. the NDP’s housing plan was good on feels but they weren’t making the actual policy changes we need and that is rapid densification to solve this crisis.
Man yea.. I live in Melbourne (Victoria, Australia) where all the major infrastructure projects and other policies are mostly controlled by the state government. I didn't realise how much a good thing that was since I took it for granted

I knew the nimbys weren't going to give up easily they have holded Toronto hostage for decades and they're not about to give up easily, not a fan of Ford but he maybe next with the proposal he has passed
IMO that's speculation about the nimbys. We don't know for sure at this point what the motives are of the tipster. There is opposition to other aspects of Tory's politics while there seems to be little public opposition on housing.

Great video, and I agree while Toronto can help in the housing crisis, it probably is still too small to solve it, that can only happen through the province or if the other municipalities in the GTA come to their senses

I'm so glad Tory's gone. I've never seen anyone who loves the sound of his own voice more. During the COVID grift he sanctimoniously virtue signaled at length and delighted in the imposition of illegal and unwarranted restrictions. Hopefully, I'll never hear from him again.

I didn't know John Tory was going to upzone the Single Family neighborhoods. It's kind of a shame he's stepping down then, right? Unless the next mayor is even better. Yes, the Province needs to remove most zoning ability from local jurisdictions. But just upzoning all of Toronto would go a hell of a long way.
it will happen, even if the next mayor doesnt set it as a priority, they can only slow it down not stop it, the demographics are just heavily against single family zoning in the city of Toronto, since every year the share of people living in single family homes goes down
Your videos are fantastic.
Political ambitions notwithstanding, where I disagree with you is that a single actor with a lot of conviction who “controls” the most important city in the region could very well have set off a chain reaction after some years of tangible results.
To bake a good load of bread, sometimes you have to add something that smells awful before it can rise into something we can all eat.
And what exactly did John Tory know, it certainly wasn't about how to run a city, or about city planning or about people in general. It was only about how to wield power over people and on how to retain and take advantage of power. Certainly hope that his replacement will be a fiscal conservative.

He didn't believe in cyclists having more power than car owner's on streets or roads. He didn't believe in multi-billion dollar glorified streetcars (the LRT)

Good riddance! Toronto's infrastructure and crime has gotten much worse during his time as Mayor.
I will argue that Mayor David Miller who held two terms and desperately begged for Strong Mayoral Powers but kept being shut down by the councillors as a counter example. Furthermore, as much as one may dislike Tory's housing policies, it is essential to recognized there were numerous times he tried to expand housing rights but was shot down by councillors who represent NIMBY voters and suburban areas. It got to the point where Mayor Tory was forced to water down his budgets due to the brutality of the councillors.
I will also argue that mayoral powers are weakened significantly because of the lack of strong powers which forces them to work with everyone and since there are more suburban councillors, it prevents them from taking on more aggressive housing issues. This is especially exemplified by the fact that a lot of suburban councillors receive less votes and to be honest, only get votes from NIMBYs as they are the most vocal and likely to vote in a municipal election.
I am not a Ford fan and do not claim to be, but it is clear to me that we need a mayor to have strong powers to ensure that NIMBY councillors can be steam rolled, especially as by the nature of the job the councillors are more likely to be NIMBYs

Having studied city planning here in Toronto the biggest thing I learned from this video was that not only the "WHO'S BETTER THAN BADBOOY? NOOOOBOOODY" was the owner and that it was a local business. For some reason I always assumed it was American. Living in York region the rate is densification is definitely increasing compared to when I was growing up. 10,000 units to be built across the street from me.

John Tory was brought down by the Curse of Dundas Street!!! He tried to rename it and it bit back and forced him out. Olivia Chow decided not to rename it for that reason and just rename Dundas Square after some Ghanaian slave-traders (her favorite people) but Dundas Street will get her too!!! Dundas Street is the "Main Street" of my life and the roughest, toughest, meanest critters in Toronto traditionally lived along it and if you mess with it you die!!! Don't mess with Dundas Street!!!

Have you looked into regional government? Something similar to the regional municipalities, but covering the whole region...something similar to Metro Toronto prior to amalgamation.
Personally I don't think Queens Park is equipped to act as regional government for the GTA which is effectively what they are today.
Yes, found that fascinating while I was in Toronto because I actually stay in Hamilton when I go to visit which means you really notice the dynamic. Although Montreal is home, I hope I can get back to Toronto every once and a while to make a video.

Idk if you have the time to read a book on the topic. But there's a couple good ones "Governing Toronto: Bringing Back the City that Worked" by Alan Redwood, and "The Shape of the Suburbs: Understanding Toronto's Sprawl" by John Sewell.
Toronto's political organizational history is truly fascinating and I think a video dedicated to it would be a boon for urbanist CZcams.
Especially considering the present organization has only existed since basically 2000. And it *just so happens* a lot of the dysfunction of our municipalities has come about after that point.
Regional government is basically gutted as of Bill 23... no more elected regional chairs and planning is all centralized at Queen's Park...

It's so crazy to me that Toronto covers an area about 50% larger than Montreal, with about 60% more people, but they have 25 councillors, and Montreal have 65 plus another 38 boroughs councillors, for a total of 103. I don't know if Toronto has the equivalent of Montreal's boroughs councillors but the difference is pretty staggering.

Strong Premiers? Sigh. Well, yeah, if the goal is to get movement. What worries me is direction. Do you want strong societies, or strong corporations. Strong corporations only require funding, not strong premiers. But if you want strong societies, you need a strong premier with a vision. Ford only seems like a corporate sellout. He's pretty strong at putting on strong airs of being "for the people." I don't get the impression that's who he is, though. And his statement against "lefty mayors" is kinda telling. Well, that and that he's a conservative. But that anti-lefty rhetoric is reminiscent of the MAGA platform south of the border.
