Learn how to play Just What I needed as performed by The Cars from their self-titled debut album from 1978. Great power pop / rock tune with an interesting verse a/b section and a super-hooky solo from Elliot Easton. He is amazing and crafts great solos that are "singable" and interesting. In this lesson I'll cover the rhythm and lead parts and talk a little about his approach to the guitar solo.
Got a suggestion for a piece of a song to cover on an upcoming episode? Leave it in the comments, would love to hear ideas.

The cars is where it all started for me,early 80s,my sister's bf gave me the first cars album.i picture sitting with my guitar, record player, picking the needle up n down trying to figure it out.those were the best days
Another fantastic song 12 I saw the CARS / wang chung in 1984 at the CNE in Toronto ♪♫♪♫♪ Elliot Easton is so under rated 🎸
I remember back in 1978 when their self titled debut album came out, followed by Candy-O in 1979! The CNE opens this Friday, “let’s go to the EX oh baby”! Seen a lot of concerts at the old CNE Grandstand, good times!🇨🇦🎸
1978 what a great year for rocknroll .
meet me at the 1050 chum booth , over by the chum wildcat .
just off the midway
Not underrated, he's considered a legend
My goodness...what a solo..everything about it sings. No fluffy filler nonsense. Such a great player!!
Nice...again,...Elliott was way underrated...🍺🍺😉🤘✨️
Hahaha.. ya can’t fool me..! Left handed..?! 🤣
Cool guitar tune..! I wore out this 8-track in the 80’s..! Damn I’m old..lol..
Thanks man.! Great breakdown..👍🏼❤️
Having grown up in Boston, I’ve been listening to the Cars since the late 70s and I’ve never heard that melodic guitar part in the chorus until Rick Beato did a video on this song. It’s a GREAT lick that (like pretty much everything else Eliot plays) fits perfectly in with the song.
Another great demo/ lesson from 12 foot chain! Thank you once again. 🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠
Pefect! had attempts at learning this on and off for the thick end of thirty years, but always got lost at the fast climbing run at the end of the solo. Not any more! You Sir, are a legend! Thank you.
Love the music of The Cars. This song has a great heavy sound.
Who underrated Easton? Not I- just the folks who make mention of it is who. Wish I could play guitar as good as him or you, sir. However I am an excellent driver of my car- just underrated is all.
Your Awsome…Love your style of teaching and your song choices…I’m a blues purist and rock infused blues but love all the early 70s 80s classics…one thing I never see much of is the style of Johnny Winter slide and delta blues rock…would love to incorporate songs with this type of playing asap…hope to see some real soon…thanks again your my favorite teacher❤
Thank you!
I just love that Les Paul you play.
George Harrison played one like that. So cool
It’s a very unique colour
Thanks very much sir for your generosity in sharing your knowledge
More Cars, please!!! This is awesome! 😎😎
Thanks, one of my All Time Favorites!! And, since I'm a Lefty, Elliot Easton is Up There as One of Inspirational Influences, along with Jimi Hendrix. I just got a Harley Bentley, budget SG Style Guitar specifically for Open E Slide, and I'm working on Victim Of Love with it, but this a Song/ Guitar Part I want to Learn.
Thanks very much! It’s definitely just what I needed ❤️
Sweet
Great lesson of my favorite Cars song!🎼
I'm with you regarding Elliot, great player! The Cars was my first concert in 1979, they were touring for Candy O.
You mentioned the R&R HOF ceremony. If anyone needs a lesson on thankfulness and grace, watch their acceptance speeches. I thought they were fantastic! Very appreciative and joyous!
Absolutely. All smart, respectful guys. Only wish Ben could have been there. It was cool they all have him a shout out.
great teacher
Thanks! I like Elliot as well. I think he’s super melodic.
GREAT VIDEO. This Helped my cover band learn the parts... VERY Un-assuming player. Can you do a video for 'You might think" - The Cars?
Thank you.
Great coaching cheers
Great lesson…I love the cars…one of THE best bands I ever saw live…I have a hard time copying Elliotts licks cuz a lot of the time they are so hard to hear with the drums and keys going!!!
These are really good video lessons. I follow a few and this is more like it was when I began playing in the late 70s. Same tunes, and the way we learned was the same. Listen to the notes, chords. Try to figure out what Keith or Ronnie was playing, etc. Thanks, man. Brings me back to when I was in my early teens: no iPhone, tabs. Just a 33/1/3 and some guys to jam with.
Thanks!
Always learn from you. Like the figures during chorus. BTW, your merch., Gear Acquisition Syndrome is real. There is nothing wrong with us that years and years of therapy can't prolong. More amps please!! 😃
I'm bingin' yer content now😂 first heard this when I was 12, on a greatest hits cassette. Love this and 'best friends girlfriend' so much....also, I feel pretty cool now as I'm also a lefty😂👍👍 really enjoy yer clear and accurate soundin' lessons. Thank you!
Rock on!
Great lesson (as are the others) -- my old high school band in the '80s used to cover all these old Cars hits; thanks for the refresher on the solo!! Eliot Easton was a beast -- I saw them live at Poplar Creek outside Chicago in about '84 with Eddie Money. Great show. If you're open to looking at other melodic rock guitarists in that era, was wondering if you might want to take a crack at Berton Averre's work on Oh Tara or Heartbeat from The Knack (I know My Sharona gets all the play ... but in my mind, these other two songs are what I loved about The Knack -- although the Sharon guitar solo. and outro are legendary and high quality too).
Sorry to comment twice. I would love for you to do driver's seat sniff and the tears
Yes the leads over the chorus part is key.i use a ditto n play over.
I always put Elliot, Neal Geraldo, and Jeff Golub together...some of these licks sound like turn arounds in Hit Me With Your Best Shot... are they the same key? Awesome channel!
Great lesson👍. Is it me, but you resemble Andy Garcia.
Candy O please.
I don't know if Elliot, was specific on which guitar he used, he had a les paul and a SG, I just know that he said it had humbuckers, but I do know that he played through an ampeg, not a Marshall amp.
Hahaha! You could have achieved "Guitar God" status on the switch to lefty, had you used a different guitar and changed to a shirt with no letters!😉
o-cass-ek?
Given that you designed that T-shirt yourself, you totally could have made one with the text mirrored so that your left handed guitar solo was more convincing :)
I never heard anybody pronounce it that way. Seems like I hear people, even close to the band say it, “oh-cass-ic.” 😮😅
But I always thought it was, “Oh-case-ic!” 😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸
Kinda like Neil “Pert!”
Elliot E. put the drive in the cars😅😅no seriously they
would've been kinda synth pop without him.
Um, do you actually know the notes on the neck? I’d review them if I were you.
No im not
I was going to watch your vid but got tired after 4 minutes of nothing……take note of anyone can play guitar, his format. He plays the entire lesson first. Then he breaks it down. I want the presentation first. Not trying to be mean, just think it’s more effective.
Stop talking and play. I wanna see you left hand, not your room.
