      @tzaeru Před 4 lety +88

      This isn't reliably verified though. It's related to something Dana White said but White has a habit of exaggerating things or sometimes just coming up with stuff for reporters. He said that he heard that Silva's corner talked about how Silva's leg cracked in a 1st round check, but Silva's corner speaks Brazilian Portuguese and White doesn't, so it's all 2nd hand info. And the corner could have been wrong. Maybe Silva was just saying that the earlier check hurt a bit but it wasn't actually a crack.

    • @tzaeru

      "Many consider to be the most severe injury in the sports history"
      This is definitely a lesser known injury, since it was a less prolific fighter in a less prolific promotion. Lucky for Santos, it was a frontal sinus fracture and didn't actually cave his skull in. He broke the bones in front of his sinuses, rather than breaking a skull plate, so harder to say how much worse it was than a tib/fib fracture (since I'm not a doctor).

No matter how good his striking and kicking still was, his subconscious had to fight him every single step of the way for any future kicks, and that impacted his explosiveness... As someone who has been Thai boxing since I was 12 I just wanted to say thank you for the explanation and to my knowledge you are 100% correct about conditioning. The purpose of the conditioning exercises we do is to “kill” the subsurface nerves that are between the bone and that thin layer of skin. That way when you kick or check a kick you aren’t hopping around on one foot like your grandpa after hitting his shin on the coffee table. Thumbs up doc. Keel em coming

    He was training only a few days before the fight and he has Muay Thai training and part of Muay Thai is shin hardening due to repetitive creation and healing of micro fractures so what probably happened was there wasn’t enough time for Silva’s micro fractures in his leg to heal and the kick was kinda the final straw

    • @SamsonGuest
      @SamsonGuest Před 4 lety +16

      This is super speculative. It's not like every training session in muay thai has shin hardening. It's just something people who train muay thai periodical do.
      And I think it's quite a stretch to assume he did this very close to the actual fight.
      And you also do not need a microfracture too explain a fracture like this happening in these circumstances.
      It might aswell break without a micro fracture.

    • @Liam-yk1ww

    It's very good to point out "Kick Checks". Weidman checked *every kick* Silva was throwing. If you watch the fight again it even looks like an amateur mistake.
    I'm not Anderson but, as a fighter, I think he was setting up a high kick and that's why he kept kicking with force. So he could eventually kick high and Weidman would try to low-check and be hit by a head kick.
    Count the kicks that Weidman Checked. I was surprised his leg didn't break earlier.

    • @Keithustus
      @Keithustus Před 4 lety

      Well I don't think fighters before this were thinking that a check could actually end a fight, just hurt somewhat.

    • @Mhurilo10
      @Mhurilo10 Před 4 lety +5

      @@Keithustus This has happened before in other fights. I remember joking "That check is 6months of phisiotherapy".
      Of course I didn't expect Silva's leg to break in half but the injury was obvious (To me and my friends) so I think it's not unreasonable to think that pro fighters were aware of the possibility.

    As a PTA I’ve worked with a lot of ORIF’s and llizarov fixators and the like and all I can say is I’m glad Silva didn’t develop any osteomyelitis or any other severe infection. I’ve seen more than a few failed attempted fixations result in a later amputation.
