As an elementary teacher you expressed what it took me a long time to realize. I never could predict how children would come to me each morning. I had to reach each child where they were that day. It was crucial that I remained calm, read body language and identified kids that needed extra attention that day. I am retired now, but am so grateful for my days spent with my students.
Schools need teachers like you. It takes a special person to want to try and understand each student, and to self check yourself to adapt to the student at any given time. I'm thankful for you teaching children even if you are retired. You give a damn to the highest level and I hope there is still many like you and will continue to be in today's world.
You appear to be very invested in the children. Good job.

Wow most teachers expect the kids to meet the teacher where they are. They see the kids as one "student body" one organism that moves together. Schools are great about removing the individualism out of the individual.

Thank you for the sacrifices you have made. Politics aside, you went through hell fighting for a better future and that commands universal respect.
I've never had any male figure I could look up to, sit a while and listens to whatever he has to share, and listen with intention and care, since I respect what they say and what can teach me.
These videos are starting to heal that wound, and I don't think I can put into words how I closely listen and reflect and be calm when you speak, whether it be about horses which is so far away from what my life is, to cigars and to mistakes and learnings.
I wish you the best and thank you for being in this piece of the internet for when people needed it the most.

Today is going to be a rare one, a physical and mental rest day. I have free time by myself to leisurely do whatever I wish, and I intend to invest a big heap of this time watching Dry Creek Wrangler School for the majority of it. It's already going to be great.

I got so angry at my 20 year old son tonight because we had an important family event, and he didn't show up to it. Instead, he went to a movie with his girlfriend. And when I called him, he said that he simply forgot. "Sorry." I didn't handle his response very well at all, and I let him have it. Now I realize that I didn't help anything by losing my temper. This video is what I needed to hear. Thank you.
As a 20 year old myself, well technically 19 but will be 20 at the end of the month, I can understand where he was coming from. He has a girl that he wants to impress and get closer to, so he goes to see a movie without thinking. It could be that he just forgot, but it could also just be different priorities. Maybe deep down he knew that this family even was that day he saw a movie with his girl, but he felt as if that mattered more, just as you felt him being there for that family event mattered more.
He's still young, I'm even younger, our priorities will change and reading that your perspective has broadened from this video, it brings a fuzzy feeling in my heart sir.
I hope he doesn't hold a grude against you, personally I try to understand why my own father gets upset at me. It's love. It always has been, so understanding his perception on me and how I believe his perception, really helped improve my understanding on how to handle his agitated speeches. He is an impatient man, he has told me this many times, so when I do things that waste his time he gets irritated. We can only try to stay calm and understand other people's perspectives on things. It's all perspective, my issue is that I take things too personally, and thus I have to learn to toughen up.

What I learn from the stories you tell, I put to use in my daily life. I lost my grandfather a few years ago. I miss his stories and advice. Thanks for taking the time to share what you’ve learned in this road called life. It’s nice to get the heads up on what’s ahead.
High expectations often do the opposite of motivating us - they demotivate us because the goal we’d set for ourselves seems unattainable. In dog training I always give dogs the tasks easy enough for them to succeed but hard enough to keep them interested and challenged. I think this applies to every sphere of life. Balance is key. And we should only compare ourselves to our past selves.
Thank you very much for your wisdom. Yours are wise words I will do well to heed as a father to my two boys. Not only that, on a mental health front, we all need to work with the self which turns up each day. Sometimes one is up to the general tasks of life and sometimes not. We need to go easy on ourselves and others.

This is so wild. Just earlier today I had to step back and manage my expectations and then I saw this video pop up and man this is exactly the perspective I’ve needed. If you compiled your lessons and pushed them into a book for younger people like me to read and learn from. I’d buy it!

My horse has taught me more than I have taught her.
Ridden horses maybe 2 or 3 weeks out of my 34 years of life. At least one of those weeks in cave city Kentucky. The rest on my old aunt Kay's farm (God rest her soul). That has nothing to do with why I watch this channel. Ol Dewayne has wise words to say and I listen. Also the episode(s) he and his wife did about marriage are absolutely priceless. (Not married but I have a child with a woman I met almost a decade ago and it has been a learning experience the entire way. ) Anyway, wise words and wisdom. That's why I've liked and subscribed some time ago and I certainly watch every video. Even if some I just listen to while I'm running the ol articulated boom crane on a jobsite slinging concrete forms and panel sets for Mike Siler. He's good people too.

Raising three small kids...I know this lesson in my brain. Sometimes it's good to have an external reminder. I'm often expecting them to be different than they are that day, morning, or whatever. But they're good kids and I would do well to remember that more frequently, and make them know I appreciate and love them. I can stand to mature just as much as they will in time.

I know you have talked about a variation of this saying, but " Expectations are Resentments, Waiting to Happen." Everything is relative. There is only preference, and people are only responsible for their own. It is possible to love someone whose preferences don't align. Your channel is literally my church 🤙
Excellent points, Dewayne and I needed this reminder right now. We’ve either said or heard a million times - “expectations only breed disappointments”. Cant thank you enough. You're talking about horses but you're also not. This advice helps me so much in my relationships and life. Im 23 and like a lot of others ive lacked this kind of wisdom and insight from older people in my life. I always get recommended your videos when it counts and find, almost like therapy that I need to watch them a couple times a week to remind myself of your lessons. She's a good-BEST girl scuse me, but she repeatedly "misses the memo" when we go to the park on the wrong day. Things will not always go how we want and none of us can grow if we give up on the first struggle. You are raising a great mare and I have full confidence that you will have her ready in no time.👍

Dewayne this spoke to me more than most and most do. I had 3 horses in particular in my life that taught me a lot about horses and myself. Those were only 3 of a number of them but just so happens those were all mares as well. Wet saddle blankets a great teaching tool. I can’t tell you how many times I’d ride out with the same expectations you spoke of only to be disappointed when it all fell into. And like you mentioned, it’s like that in life. We expect a reaction from someone or a result to a situation and when that’s not met we respond negatively. If we’re honest that’s pretty much why we get upset with others. The horse is the same. That’s not communicated so there’s a lack of understanding. I’ve ridden out thinking this is going to be a leisurely thing, no responsibilities to fulfill, nothing to work on, no schedule but just a ride. Doesn’t always go that way. And, like you said, the way we respond speaks volumes. Horses, and kids for that matter, seem to learn the “bad lesson” first and easiest. In my youth and inexperienced self those horses turned out to be a reflection of all the negative responses I had. Some had those little twerks or insecurities when out riding you come to expect but always hoped you get them through eventually. From barn or buddy sourness, picking out “boogers” at every turn. It’d seem like some would go looking for something to crow hop, jig or swap ends about. As if a Walmart bag, hung up and blowing in a barbed wire fence, wasn’t enough! How about that one mare who’d get that horse fly right in that spot above the base of the tail and her old tail was a little too short to reach it. How many times did we think, “ you know if you hadn’t been such a knucklehead today I’d be a little quicker to help you out with that!”. All the while taking a little deeper seat and preparing for that little heavier SWAT when you did! Yep, like you mentioned, none of us has walked on water! Good word today pard!

Sometimes we have expectations of people that we have no right to have. Like you said, she has the excuse of being young and inexperienced and you are neither. I am guilty of projecting my morals and behavior onto others and I get really upset when they don't live up to my idea of how they should act. Not everyone had the benefit of role models and guidance growing up.
You called me out today buddy, i needed to hear this. Work has been a struggle lately. I know that i tend to expect to much from my team and my management. My expectations are very high. Maybe i need to lower them to a level that is easier to reach.

I never struggled keeping my mind right with animals I was always calm cool collected and I loved every minute no matter what. Then after 6 years off while I was in the military I came back and struggled it has been about 8 years now and I'm finally getting my mind right to work with them.Your videos have helped me and I bet my mules and horse have noticed to as they have gotten much better
Look up Warrick Schiller, hopefully you’ll find him helpful. He says something similar that Dwayne said, “work with the horse that’s in front of you that day.”

It took me a while to figure this all out, but developing a mindset that all things work toward the good is a philosophy that gets me through many a bad day.
As you said, if we don't have bad ones, we can't judge what good ones should look like.
Resolve and gentle strength is what I rely upon to face those bad days, although I am human and don't always practice what I preach. When the smoke clears and I can look at what could have and should have been, I realize that calm would have been the better choice.
This is a great reminder and advice.

I needed to hear this today.... you pretty much described my to lads yesterday. My eldest is 6, youngest is 3. I thought wed have a good day, bowling, arcade, food then indoor soft play. Reality though is theyre both young lads that are experiencing a new world with lights, games, noise. They were excitable they wanted to be able to unleash there energy like we would in the parks. But they needed to be able to contain the excitement a little bit more than they wanted....
I couldnt relax and i expected them to be able to contain themself like an adult would.... my fault, not theirs and i shouldnt have held them to my.expectations. patience is what i need to learn..
after work today im taking them the park, they need to be kids.

Dewayne, your talk today could be applied to any animal or human situation in life !!! I will be taking my first ride on a well trained mare I've had for 20 years, but with a new twist...I have a brace on my right knee that is a permanent fixture whenever I will be doing a lot of standing, walking, etc. It will be a strange thing to her and a source of concern for me in how she will accept that hard pressure where she's not been exposed to it. I like to ride bareback so I can feel the horse under me, but maybe for safety's sake start with a saddle until I get used to riding with the brace myself and once I have a few rides under our belt, then try the bareback. She always acts like a greenbroke first ride out of the pasture, but she's also not been saddled in almost 10 years due to my work status, her pregancies, and the number of other horses I had at the time as well as relocating from Wyoming to North Dakota. Since then I've moved a lot of horses and am now down to 2 mares and 1 yealing filly foal and a 4 month old filly foal and 1 mini mare. I look forward to this ride and being mobile again thanks to the horse herself because the knee has limited my range of travel on foot. Thanks again for reminding me that patience and understanding go a long way in the outcome !!! Many blessings to you and your family and have a pleasant 4th of July !!!
