    When of the things that I admire about the kids from this "show" is the fact that none of them got messed up like so many child stars over the years. Michael Landon should be given "props" for that because although he was strict, he was fair and when the kids weren't on the show, they had to study because school to him was very important.

    That moment at 3:28 when Mary slaps Nellie.....I do believe that is the ONLY time I have EVER seen Mary do something like that on the show. They establish it very clearly on the show that Mary is the good girl. She's the quiet, well-mannered, beautiful young lady who always keeps her clothes neat and gets good grades in school and doesn't usually get into trouble (she is her mother's daughter) and Laura is the tom-boy with her braids flying free, who isn't afraid to get into a fight or speak her mind. To see Mary haul off and slap Nellie is hilarious because it is so out of character for her.

      There was suppose to be a fight between Mary and Nellie. The tension between Melissa Sue and Alison was so bad that they changed the fight to a slap because they feared a real fight would have broken out between the two girls. Melissa Sue threatened to harm Alison during that scene and pull her hair from the roots. Even many years after Little House wrapped up, these two had their moments. Melissa Sue threatened to sue Alison for liable and slander in 2010.

      Per my understanding, at the time, Missy Sue and her real-life mom were more like Nellie and Mrs. Olson, and were not very polite to anyone, including Michael Landon and also Linwood Boomer later on. Starting in Season Five, she didn’t want to appear in any episodes where Mary, with or without Adam, are just off-to-the-side, unless she actually has a major part. She was against creating another Nellie character after Alison Arngrim left the series, which is part of the reason Mary and Adam are never seen again after A Christmas They will never Forget. Thank goodness over the years she has changed and the cast has considered her former behavior as water under the bridge.

It is actually the law in the U.S. that all child professionals, whether actors, musicians, etc, are required to be schooled a certain number of hours a day. That's why whenever you hear about child stars they always say that they went to school on the set, or on the road for musicians. It's definitely a good thing.

      In the first few books, there were times the real Laura was jealous of her older blonde sister and felt left out because Laura’s own hair was brown. The late Laura Ingalls Wilder also mentions that prior to her late sister’s blindness, Mary seemed to get all the boys and attention. It doesn’t surprise me that both Melissa’s were like this for the series’ first seven seasons (even though Melissa Sue’s appearances were limited during season’s five and six, and very limited during season seven, mostly because she was getting tired of the series, still being difficult to work with, and pursuing other projects). After reading Melissa G’s biography a little, Melissa G is happy to say that Melissa Sue is different nowadays, more like Mary, and thankful she had the opportunity to work with her.

    I think the cast members who were more like their characters, that is, the late Ingalls family and friends, were: Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, the Greenbush twins, Kevin Hagen, Dabbs Greer, Charlotte Stewart, Karl Swenson, Victor French, Richard Bull, the Turnbaugh twins, and Dean Butler.

      And Jim Jeter, Tracie Savage, Bonnie Bartlett, Radames Pera, Brian Part (when Carl was behaving himself and not getting into mischief), Kyle Richards (then, that is), Merlin Olsen (minus the drinking), Hersha Parady, the Labortyeaux brothers, Moses Gunn, Linwood Boomer, Dub Taylor, Ketty Lester, Michelle Downey, Ruth Foster, Steve Tracy, Jason Bateman, Missy Francis, Stan Ivar, Pam Roylance, Lindsay Kennedy (only when Jeb wasn't acting obnoxious), Dave Friedman, Shannen Doherty (then definitely and a few years after, maybe in recent years too), Leslie Landon, and for the most part, Mr. Landon himself.

      Besides Katherine "Scottie" MacGregor and Alison Arngrim, I think the other cast members who were not like their characters were Jonathan Gilbert, Wayne Heffley, Don "Red" Barry, Lucy Lee Flippen (I sure as hell hope she's not like Eliza Jane! She looked and sounded normal in "Flashdance.") and Allison Balson.

    In reality Mary Ingalls was blind due to an infection (not Scarlet Fever) she was never married,and she lived out her life with her little sister Carrie and died before her little sisters (Laura, Carrie,& Grace) all around i feel Mary's life was so unfortunate and i do not favor the way Micheal Landon scripted Melissa's character, she was a better actress than Melissa Gilbert but because of the books Melissa Gilbert got top billing. As a fan of the show i guess i'll always have sympathy for Mary

    • @38yofrmut
      @38yofrmut Před 6 lety +8

      Well it makes sense that Melissa G would get top billing and something to look for when auditioning. It was Laura who wrote the books, not Mary, although Melissa Sue was more popular as a teen idol than Melissa G. Per my understanding, Michael Landon and Ed Friendly of NBC were so interested in the books and Laura Ingalls Wilder’s surviving family. From day one, Melissa G took the role seriously and developed a strong father-daughter bond with Mr Landon just like the real Laura and Charles did in the books.

      @kaydee1696: How can you say Melissa Sue was a better actress? I think she was definitely good--everyone was good on that show--but Melissa/Laura had a special quality that was both cute, spunky and touching. And I do believe Michael Landon and Melissa G. had a special relationship. Even on the show you can see that play out in the plots. That's just how life is! Michael created and wrote the show and obviously felt a certain affinity for Melissa G.

    Rather disappointed that there were unfavourable comments on her personality when she was filming this drama..
    Always thought Melissa Sue Anderson and Melissa Gilbert were best of friends then.

    I meant to say that Child Labor Laws require all working children complete their education up to the age at which they can legally drop out, then it is their own choice, just like with other kids. I did not mean to say that they all finish high school; they finish the minimum required. But of course you are right, the influences from their parents, guardians and adults who work with them definitely make a difference, and that includes the environment that Michael Landon created on his show.

    I remember being in 6th grade during '88-'89 school year, or maybe it was 7th grade the next year, perty sure it was 6th, I'll need to use a lifeline before making it my final answer, just messin', 😂😂😂😂😂, but I went to a book fair at school. It was then I became aware of the thesaurus if I recall correctly. I sure bought it, and I would make it my personal bees to look up different synonyms and actually used some of them. I would die laugh at some of the slang, like, flatfoot for police. In HS, I would use some synonyms, or "big words" to try and fit in with the adults. I need to get a thesaurus again.....
