Was just about to have a nap here in England saw your video looks like the nap can wait. I have a aquaclear 70 which I converted into a refugium. Works great I used to laugh at these HOB filters but this aqua clear is something else. I couldn’t source it here in England so had it sent in from Germany.

prolificbreed yeah from what I found out was it was here in England but didn’t do well, most Hagen equipment is kind of laughed at here within the community. But the retailers have seen the cool refuguims and special builds and have been asking crazy money for there last ones that they have in stock. I saw one for over 130 pounds!

I feel like the water closer to the bottom of tank will be a bit more stagnant and less filtered as it's made further away from the where water is intaked.
I actually have this same design set up with one of my Fluval fx6 filter Intakes....works good but make sure you keep the water level topped off or that thing will be sucking air.

Michael Tartaglia III you can go either way but i prefer the box because it eliminates the ugly pipe in your tank. In my case i don’t have to worry about the clogged mesh any more

Im starting a 20 gal long with soft corals. I bought an AquaClear 30 but I also will have 40lbs of sand and rock.
Would you recommend I get a larger aquaclear? Id have more options, more room for media and possibly a refugium.
Just worried that the larger filters would have too much flow and disturb inhabitants.
But IDK?
Well whatever I do, I plan to contact you friend about getting a skimmer box.

Fugitive Irons congrats! If you plan on using an aqua clear go with the larger aqua clear 70 for more media and space like you said. You can swap propellers with an aqua clear 20 or 30 to slow down the flow.

Charles Dill if you dial it in you don’t hear it at all. I have the water level all the way up so the filter is not splashing water back down. Having an auto tip off keep everything consistent
In the beginning of the video you have the flow set to low. At the end with the skimmer the flow is set to high. Did that might have an affect on it? Was it dirty in the beginning of the vid. Just curious as to why you made the comment of flow. Because even on low setting I have a tremendous amount of flow.
Hi Nicolas, i had to rewatch the video. The start of the video i just had the tube and some mesh I zip tied over it. It was pretty much clogged and restricted a lot of water from flowing. With the skimmer in it just freed up up the flow I to the Aqua Clear. For the Aqua Clear 70 If you have too much flow you can buy a Aqua Clear 50 propeller and swap to slow down the intake.

It will start sucking air. For this tank, I have an auto top off made by smart aqua on the side
No different than a tidal brand filter. Watch the water level or use a ato.
what are the dimensions of this surface skimmer?
Sorry I haven’t had a chance to measure for you. Are you trying to gauge how it will look inside your tank?
Does a surface skinner still pick up the stuff in the water colum or just surface stuff
