    • @TwoBs

Yea, most gyms I have gone to over the years here locally (pretty rural area, so there isn’t always packed gyms) has been extremely accommodating and welcoming to anyone coming in that’s overweight just as they were helpful to me when I came in extremely underweight at 105.
It can feel intimidating at first, but once you get to know most there, you start to understand we’ve all got our own issues and we’re all trying to do what we can to be healthier. Like I went one time and there was a girl who was extremely buff … she talked about weighing 370 and started going to that gym and is at 200, but is real toned. She power-lifts and even helps other women going there who want to try. She talked about how she had times where she wanted to quit because nothing seemed like it was working, and some of the guys there at the gym gave her a meal plan and she was able to lose weight while still putting on muscle.
I’ll always welcome anyone at a gym. Just as long as you’re not sitting there filming yourself the whole time and getting more worked up over someone in your shot more so than getting worked up over your workout, then you’ll be fine at most gyms … and I hope anyone that is overweight that is looking to go to one knows that the majority are not there to pick on you or mock you. Trust me, we’ve got our own flaws to obsess over at times. If you go a gym and there’s people there who stare and laugh and they don’t get called out for it, leave. No gym is worth your money if they don’t call that shit out.

Heart disease is the number one leading cause of death for Americans. (Cancer is 2nd) That's not accounting for other leading causes of death that correlate with unhealthy eating habits such as strokes and diabetes. Now you don't have to be heavy set to die of these conditions however it has been proven that a heavy set person would be at greater risk for these diseases and less healthy than the same person would be if they lost just a few pounds.
However we do often eliminate them from our dating choices and/or say mean things simply because we find visual cues of unhealthiness unattractive. It's actually related to us subconsciously seeking out partners with more desirable genes to pass on to our offspring (even if we don't want to have kids). This goes for a lot of people with less treatable disabilities too. It's kinda cooked into our DNA.

I am all for providing nice clothing for overweight people, as someone who has struggled with weight my whole life finding well fitting clothing can be difficult and when I had decent clothing I felt more confident and was more likely to go outside, go for a walk and exercise instead of shutting myself in and feeling ugly. So there is definitely a benefit to helping overweight people feel more confident, but confidence can be gained without denying reality.
Nearly everyone I know who has struggled with weight the core issue was not the obesity but self esteem issues, depression and motivational issues, we can argue about chicken and the egg but generally when you deal with the underlying mental health crisis usually the weight reduces.
Denying there is an issue, denying there is real longterm consequences, denying science and medical knowledge is beyond a joke, you help no one by just denying there is an issue. You need to acknowledge the issue, find the underlying cause, and then work with that person to rebuild their image of who they could be.

I hate when they say it's only fat people who get talked about in health settings. In school they taught us about obesity AND anorexia. And they worked much harder to teach us how to identify and report people with signs of anorexia and bulimia than they did obesity. Gym teachers told us that basketball players have had heart attacks and it doesn't matter how you look, you need to eat right and exercise.

It's so true with the age thing, when I worked in the home-based carer industry the amount of people I had to visit and move in their later years due to their size was already creeping up and their ages were getting lower. They obviously didn't like it and could tell that most of them felt really embarrassed, especially when they're hanging from a person-lift being moved around their home. A lot of these people really don't think about 20 years down the line, and when that 20 years down the line creeps up on them, they usually regret it.

Aba is speaking the absolute truth 💯about the health risks of obesity! At 5'7 (woman), between the ages of 25-36 I went from being overweight to Morbidly Obese (BMI @ 50%) with my highest weight peaking at 332 lbs. My labs were all off the charts (i.e., hypertension, diabetes, etc.); however, I disregarded all of that because the whole Fat Acceptance Movement was 'in' as I continued "doing me." It wasn't until I was dropping my then 6 yr old son off at school one day, and right before he gets out of the car, he turns to me and say, "Mommy, I think you're getting bigger because you keep eating food and I don't want you to 'pop' (lol) and die." The look of distress on his little face when he told me that was heartbreaking and that's when I knew I had to change. Needless to say, he is now 10 and I'm down to 185 lbs. While I still have roughly 30 lbs more to lose, I can't tell you how much of a difference losing the weight did for my overall health & quality of life. 💫

This whole fatphobic shit pisses me tf off because my mom used to be a bigger women and she was always so sad and depressed and it was going to cause her to be in a wheel chair…I would never wish that on nobody… and she even agrees after she lost all that weight she’s so much happier and healthier and feels so confident and can do everything she couldn’t do before. And now we don’t have to worry about losing her at a younger age.

Also that is often sth that keeps older people alive , being able to do stuff, having a passion, or just an activity they can do.
My grandfather isn't obese or anything, but once he could no longer take care of all of his animals, you could watch the life slowly disappearing inside of him. The fact that he still can do some things keeps him barely alive. Now imagine him being severly overweight. He wouldn't even be able to get up and go feed his chickens etc. He would have been dead a lot earlier.
But that is sth all those influencers in their 20s don't want to hear. They wanna live in DeluluLand.

I truly believe this "body positivity movement" has contributed to these very real results.

When you check carefully, you see that's also the cause for the high mortality rate of black women in child bearing. Yes, there is an effect of racism in the medical industry, but a normal healthy pregnancy should not require major medical intervention in the first place...a midwife should be able to handle it. The question is: Why are black women not having normal healthy pregnancies that don't require major medical intervention? The answer is: Obesity.

This was something that was started by BW to combat the skinny white aesthetic. Being “thick” is celebrated in black culture. I honestly believe it was started w the best intentions , this whole body positivity movement is now out of control.

@@rdkirk3834 it’s not that…a lot of discrepancies in the prenatal and postnatal services received that result in Black women dying during and after childbirth….hell Serena Williams almost died and we know she’s not obese, however her concerns post birth were not taken seriously. That being said obesity is a very REAL problem in the Black community and needs to be addressed. Just be careful with correlation equaling causation…it’s not, in this particular case

I really don't understand why it has become a trend to berate others for wanting to live a more healthier lifestyle, when these are the same exact people who will complain about the same thing happening in turn when it comes to personal trainers. Just as you don't want to be belittled for being overweight, people also don't want to be belittled for also wanting to lose weight.
Or maybe I just go to the gym regularly, so I must hate fat people. I don't know.

Because berating others for wanting a healthier lifestyle removes the accountability they should have so that they can live a longer, healthier life. That’s it. There’s no other reason behind all of this nonsense.
