Johnny Mackay had broken up with his girlfriend in late 2008 which explains the sudden influx of bitter undertones in many of their latest songs. The idea for the song was born of a dream he had, which is why this song is full of figurative allusions to all the anguish this breakup had caused him...

@Weaponfire1 You were right about 1 thing though, it's "went hunting" not "were dancing", ironically enough I thought it was the latter until I'd seen them live a handful of times and heard the lyrics more clearly!
