And in terms of scale, sure, the top 0.1% do pollute way more. But while they may pollute let’s say 100x more per capita, there’s 1000x as many people not in the top 0.1%. Idk the exact numbers, but the point is, there’s a lot of people, so if each of them does something small, it really adds up. Just because a small handful of people pollute a lot, doesn’t mean polluting a little doesn’t matter either.

If everyone besides them stopped polluting, emissions would drop 84%. Everyone else's pollution also metters. We should put more scrutiny on the rich, but that shouldn't mean that other people should be careless about their pollution.
And to clarify, the global top 1% is about $900,000 net worth, including about 19 million americans. We are talking about a much different group of people than the 15,000 americans with private jets.

I’ve flown a private jet before from the right seat since I had a connection give me some training on the job in one. I didn’t want to tell him, but I just low key felt a little disgusted by the whole industry and shifted to wanting to move boxes or go to the airlines. The only exception would be if I flew important medical supplies or something similar.
See the airlines in general are **relatively** CO2 efficient, because CO2 efficiency means fuel efficiency, and fuel efficiency saves money and makes you look good to congress when they want to fuck your shit up.
Meanwhile Rich Folks don’t really care about spending the extra pretty penny to get there 10 minutes faster, so most of the time you’re jamming that throttle as fast as it will go without the wings ripping off. Most of the time they don’t want to pay for the pilots to go out with them so they’ll send the plane back empty once they are done.
Most of the flights we did were just. “Let’s go take this family on a luxury vacation in Florida”. Or “lets go take this family 100 miles for their daughter’s boyfriend’s football game”. Meanwhile you’re basically a butler who can fly a plane. You have to make sure Mr. And Mrs. OCD don’t see a spec of dust on their countertop or a hair on the floor. Then they hop onboard and you are a butler racing to get the plane running so you are giving that “top notch service”. IDK there’s good service and then there’s whatever the fuck that was.
I’ve also heard horror stories of certain clients not understanding safety and pushing their pilots to do dangerous things. Something that airlines have ton of contingencies for.
That all being said I get it. With how rabid Swifties are, you couldn’t have her standing in line with the general public on a Delta flight. It would be dangerous. Also with how much she flies at least she’s using her jets on a more than regular basis. Most people I see will buy a super pretty jet and fly it maybe once or twice a month. She’s flying hers constantly and its being used for things like tours and concerts which means its doing something useful other than being a vacation tool. This isn’t a Taylor only problem, this whole side of the aviation industry in general is just the most wasteful.
Also General Aviation they Cram 100+ people into one flight so for however much CO2 they create you are transporting far more people then a private jet

Most of her emissions are probably indirect, from merch. As a fan, I've seen the quality decrease and the volume of products on her website skyrocket. And shipping and delivering hundreds of thousands of low quality hoodies and tshirts is definitely killing the environment (and I doubt the workers are having a great time). Her friends like Lorde have tried to be very environmentally conscious, but it feels like something Taylor is content to ignore. UMG do manage her merch, but that doesn't absolve her of responsibility.

If you want emissions taxing to work you'd have to introduce a progressive tax that allows a decent middle class living standard but makes excessive emissions financially catastrophic. For 1200tons/year/person try 5 dollars per kg. That would attach a 6 million dollar price tag to private jetting like that. And even that would be gladly payed by a professional like Taylor.
That would make a 60.000 $ tax for her. Even if you make it 10x bigger, it's still nothing to her.
All of these things are only a burden to those who emit GHG to go to work to not starve to death, not for these ultra-privileged people...

Would’ve been nice to seen this made on a globe, or at least a better projection than what seems to be Mercator? No need to make the plan flight paths look so curved when it is so zoomed in.
Curious to see this combined with locations of shows. One could argue that the CO2 emission for a show is to be divided over de crowd, whilst private destinations are not. Sidenote is that a private jet will be emittingg more than a line flight, although I can see this would both be difficult how famous she is and no direct flights available amd having to be at the next venue in a certain timeframe. Interesting video!
