- Hetfield VS Hanneman (Guitar Riffs Battle)
For this one I only picked songs for which both of them got the music credit only, or at least they were the only guitarist involved in this particual song.
While i only like the older Metallica stuff i concentrated on the first 5 albums of both bands.
Songs :
Hit the lights
Die by the sword
No remorse
Fight till death
Fight fire with fire
Necrophiliac
For whom the bell talls
At dawn the sleep
Leper messiah
Postmortem
Battery
Raining blood
Blackened
Read between the lies
The shortest straw
Spill the blood
Wherever i may roam
Dead Skin Mask
Sad but true
Seasons in the abyss
Hope you guys like this shit !! - Hudba
The metal world wouldn’t be anywhere near as good without either of these two adding to the history. RIP Jeff Hanneman.
So true!
RIP AL
So true 🤘 !
Yes! Two of my favourites!!
That’s a fact.
You look like if Lars and James had a kid
christian D when? So they actually had one? Nice
I fucking knew it! Those two are totally humpin.
I was about to say this
not when, *if*
maybe he doesnt know english, like me, and wrote that with translate or whatever hahaha
I prefer JH riffs
Good choice mate !!!
:)))))
Jimi Hendrix?
Nah your just saying the opposite of what you think people will say. Makes you feel special?
I prefer JH but hanneman was a legend also
Now that’s a riff duel. No fancy techniques, tunings, or pedals, just two raw players who could melt your face off with their riffs.

No Master of puppets. Blackened
@@panossamaras9160 Okay thanks! I was really stumped on that one and I came to the conclusion of it being MoP. I spent about 30 min. trying to figure it out and didn't want to waste anymore time on it. I figured if I was wrong (which I was) someone would come in here and correct me. Thanks I will edit and make the correction.
@@slayer5813 hey mate I didn't want the credit on the comment, I just corrected it but thanks anyway.Helpfull to put the song timers anyway. Greetings
@@panossamaras9160 Okay no problem, I removed it. Thanks for the help.
Die By The Sword will always be one of the coolest riffs I've ever heard
Fuck yeah!
I really like the riff where they harmonize before the solo. I think that’s a Kerry solo. But the harmony Jeff added makes it even better
Show No Mercy is one of the best metal albums ever!!!
I liked necrophiliac better
In your opinion
Okay, here's what really floors me about Jeff. By his own admission, he was way behind Kerry as a guitarist when the band started. He's on record saying he had to learn fast. Yet it was Jeff that wrote most of Slayer's best songs. Goes to show, it isn't what you know, it's what you fucking do with it! RIP! JEFF! SLAAAAAAAAAAAAYER!!!!
He had the most creativity and memorable sounds but Kerry was the workhorse of the band and made sure they sounded extremely tight on record, playing 90% of the guitar tracks in studio. Riffs like Piece by Piece really show his dedication to rhythm and intensity.
@@2000Doriyas 90% WOW. I would not have called that one. Thanks for the info, dude! Really puts things into perspective. Cheers!
Most dont know that, thanks for adding. Jeff.H did in fact write all the great slayer songs!!
Keyword: FAST. Jeff was punk/into punk just like Dave Lombardo (hence why punk was a common denominator for them both). Which is why I like to believe is why Jeff was able to play better than Kerry. Jeff had speed with the harmony, where as Kerry always went into overdrive when he solo's.
I also like to believe that Jeff's family background (war veterans) made for good metal material.
Fucking SLAYERRRRRRR!!!
@@SPILLTHEBLOOD_ Yup! That's the LA hardcore influence on Slayer! Jeff found a way to make it JAM like none of the others did! ^_^ Cheers!
Two JH's ruled metal music.
Serdar Yumer hahahahah that’s true!
Also, as James said after Jeff passed, they were both shy blonde kids.
Mustaine shits on both
@@axxion231 I do love Mustaine and respect his technique. but no Bro. Mustaine will always remain the third.
Serdar Yumer lol hetfield and hanneman cant write songs like dave, ull see the truth eventually, listen to more megadeth and play guitar cause u obv dont
Lombardo V Ulrich would be much shorter.
I think Justin Bieber would wiN ooohh he plays drums
LOL LARS BAD
Ulrich couldn't lock the sweat off of Lombardos balls.
If you watch Metallica Seattle 1989 Lars was amazing
@@sloppyjoe8718 well there's nothing special there, he just had tons of cocaine
Postmortem and Raining blood are the 2 best consecutive songs on any album and I appreciate you playing them together
All of seasons of the abyss i feel like was a good bridge to the next song… throughout the whole album.
As always, Hetfield is the personification of the RIFF that grabs you immediately, with immense hook power and charisma. Hanneman is the lurker RIFFER that is more sinister, more complex, and creeps up on you. Both are AWESOME RIFF masters! And you should use the fact that both are Initial J.H. in your post description!
Word !!
Word. Jeff's sound more like death metal riffs to me, which i like. But james has heavy, chugging, headbanging riffs which i can certainly see the appeal of
Could you imagine if these two collaborated on a song together in their prime??
It would be so 😷
collaborators face a summary trial ,they are guilty there can be no denial
It would be like a cross between Angel of Death, Necrophilliac, Fight Fire With Fire and My Apocalypse and it would be the best metal song ever
Yes and the result would be very bad
@@mijnheerw7253 χαχχααχαααα
Hetfield riffs are kinda Heavy Metal, A mix between Nwobhm and 70's Punk. Hanneman sounds like an Evil Judas Priest with US Hardcore. I mean, Slayer is pretty unique, very innovative for its moment.
Slayer is very primitive like a school band
Vyacheslav Artemov Ur primitive
Metallica >>>> SLulyer
Both bands are great stop arguing
That's what I appreciate about Hanneman, his mix of metal and punk. It's very cool. As where Metallica draws from Thin Lizzy to Bob Segar to Slade or Budgie. Slayer pulled from hardcore like Black Flag, Verbal Abuse, Minor Threat in addition to 70's doom metal like Sabbath. I'm more based in skatepunk and hardcore, so naturally I connected with Slayer way more. Metallica after Kill 'Em All was just uninteresting.
The breakdown riff in Angel of Death is probably the most iconic Thrash riff ever made, it takes some beating.
it´s not in the video.
It's written by Kerry King not jeff
@@sinahejratypoor8598 No, the whole song was written by Jeff including the lyrics.
Ya theirs way better riffs by hanneman than what's in this video.
Hanneman melting ALL !!! Long live Hanneman!
Hell yeahhhhhh !
Slayer would have not been nearly as good without jeff's song writing. and also on a side note slayer had a way better drumer to lead...
Well he was great just those first 5 metallica albums, they are perfect
No s*** there's no comparison here forget about it!
💪Jeff Fucking Hanneman!!💪
Best day of my life was when I got to shake Jeff Hanneman's hand. Sorry to my wife if she see's this post... but she'll understand.
We all understand 🤘🔥🤘
Much envy 🤘🤘
I didn’t know a young Thomas Jefferson could play some sick riffs!
LoL good one
Always been a diehard Metallica fan since they came out but Slayer has some of the best riffs ever. When I 1st saw the title I was like pfft not even close, but Hetfield wrote some major riffs. So it ended up being damn close. But Slayer took it in my book
OGPokey151 my thoughts exactly 🤘🏽😎🤘🏽
For you......for me metallica is the best band......better Riff better songs.........are the kings of metal
@@rodolforodriguez6230 you mean kings of thrash metal? Because the gods of metal is Black Sabbath
Yeah , I agree bigger hanneman fan but I can't deny hetfields contributions to metal music either and this video confirmed that
Herfields riffs are better imo
Why people give thumbs down to this man's videos? They are very enjoyable with a little bit of humour, his guitar playing is excellent, the sound is very good and compares the riffs of different musicians who are in the same genre. I don't really see a point of giving thumbs down. I enjoy all of these "VS" videos.
We’re blessed to have had two such amazing guitarists in our lifetime fellas
The winner is...... HEAVY METAL!!! :)
Thrash metal?
@@shaunrawson6555 also :) MUSIC :)
You mean thrash metal?
Definitely a way more difficult one to decide a winner than Hanneman vs King
Hanneman was the main riff writer for Slayer so probably would destroy King in a battle imo. Both guys were perfect for Slayer though. Metal is the best.
Nah. Het ALL THE WAY.
At Dawn They Sleep!
I think that blackened riff if from Newsted...
It is. Some people don't research before doing these versus videos lol
Read the desc and complain after.
Joey Miller Read description lol
@@linkdorf376 not a complain :) the video is awesome!!!
Miguel Braga there is bass on the album?
I'll take dead skin mask, Any day.
And Raining Blood

Dave lombardo vs lars ulrich , wtf lol moment
Didn't know Burton C. Bell had a youtube channel

Welcome dude !
SLAYER
Sorta stumbled across you a few days back it's so cool that you can play like every metal song I grew up listening too
It takes a lot of talent to bring out the qualities and differences of the musicians featured and with the comedy and mimicry and re-tuning between songs. Much appreciated. Inspiring.
Much respect to both, but Jeff had a certain something, that others didn't have. The Slayer sound wouldn't have been as iconic without him.
Awesome video man, love the concept and obviously, Hetfield and Hanneman are 2 of my favorite riffers. Killer playing and love that tone!!!
This is awesome!!! I love how the the guitar tone changes between Hetfield and Hanneman plus the Gibson Explorer and the ESP. Great video!!
This has blown me away, you're not just a metal guitarist you're one of us. Shortest straw, what a riff.
SLAYER !!!
Both are amaizing! Love both bands for different reasons!
Dude this is great man. Love to see more of riff wars.
What a great side-by-side comparison of the different styles of two legendary bands
Uhm Creepin death, dyers eve, ride the lightning, horsemen...
Hetfield didn't write the four horsemen, it was stoled from Dave Mustaine. Listen to Megadeths Mechanix .
@@MasterofLightning And possibly the main riff in Leper Messiah, if it's true, just pure shitty of Metallica
Tom Wexler you realize that rtl riffs were made while dave was with them still. It was not like dave did all the writing and james just watched. Mustaine got propz where he did the work, ride and call od ktulu.
Mustaine and Hammet...
Kirk wrote Creeping death bridge riff for Exodus, you can hear it in die by his hand demo
Damage Inc, Disposable Heroes, Dyers Eve
Love both of these guys James is my favorite though.
Jeff is the riffmaster and James the singer songwriter master. Also I think Dave Lombardo influenced Hanneman riffs in the band playing together, pushing each other to extreme.
I didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did, great job!
I vote for Hetfield's right hand...only reason is cause he sings too....that's 2 times more difficult than just jam the guitar...p.s...Jeff was a guitar God!!...R.I.P
Yes, for writing and riffs, but him and King aren't very good at playing solos.
AlwaysSomething People criticize Kirk a lot, but he’s actually way better at solos than Jeff and Kerry
@@johnp.smithasimpleman7281 the popular is always more criticized
Ork _ oz of course
Kerry had good solos. War ensemble, born of fire and chemical warfare.
Ah dead skin mask and seasons in the abyss. I never tire of thee
So glad you played "Read between the lies" this riff is awesome.
i love it !
Great comparisons. Both have unique qualities that actually accentuate one another. It was a sad day when we lost Hanneman. Thanks for the time you put into these videos.
Thanks a lot mate !
Hannefield vs Hetman riff battle \m/
The dual thumbs up for Fight Fire With Fire is how I would Imagine Jeff Hanneman reacting IRL to it. It's the most "Slayer" Metallica ever got.
Awesome to watch these.
All respect to Hetfeild, Hannneman, Mustaine and Ian.
Skolnick, Holt, Waters, and Cavestany too!
I must say Hanneman. I find his stuff more interesting because of his finger work. And despite Slayer is straight forward thrash band, Hanneman really made most of their classic riffs. For example his first shot on this video has a lot of variety.
You, my Judge Reinhold looking friend, have mastered your craft.
this is probably one of my favorite vids of yours!
Both J.H's honestly kickass but I still prefer J.H 😁😝😆👍👍💀
Hanneman was the best extreme-metal - hard core guitar player and song writer of all time...but even from a slayer fan point of view Hatfield is a guitar player at 360%....well I will give this one to the metallica's singer
Metallica is awesome and let's remember Kirk Hammet played all the difficult stuff
Phenomenal dude! Well played throughout, brought all back my childhood! Hahaha! Keep it up!
This was awesome. Hetfield and Hanneman are two of my favorites. New subscriber here. Killer video!
Damn, this was a really great side-by-side. However much I love Slayer, when you're listening to the riffs side-by-side, Metallica really damn shines!
Hanneman played hard thrash speed riffs very well. Hetfield plays more melodic riffs. Like them both
Fantastic playing and choices, but "Hanneman's" facial expression commentary really makes this haha!! Well done
You and your “challenger’s” facial expressions are the best!
Wie immer sehr geil hier!
Danke Adrian !!
Er kann deutsch?😱
Great video! I would personally include Dyers Eve as well. That's my favourite example of James playing incredibly fast yet still managing to make EVERY note easily readable. I usually name this song when friends ask me why I dislike Slayer in general - because neither King nor Hanneman could play this like James did.
Metallica could never have written Raining Blood. That's the winner for me.
@@drew3030 Raining Blood is big unreadable mess, especially when the third riff starts. I say this as a musician.
@@stam1ska There are you tube video's from musicians that cover how to play the crazy fast part. I say this as a statistician.
@@drew3030 haven't seen a single one. I mean, good riffing is when you manage to pull powerful attack and low-end punch out of the guitar, when your riffs are crushing and easily readable at the same time. That is about amp settings, correct palm positioning for palm-muting, while precisely integrating into the song rhythm at the same time. Of course it's about composing too (Slayer are terrible composers, and Raining Blood is mostly terribly composed song). The thing about James Hetfield that makes him exceptional is that he was the first metal guitarist who managed to get amazing in ALL these areas. The second one was Jeff Waters from Annihilator, then Dimebag Darrell from Pantera (Dime is literally the best riffer in metal ever). No other thrash metal guitarist could get even close to these three guys.
@@stam1ska feel free to watch them then, then comment on them. You obviously have a closed mind because you strictly are only interested in one style. Metallica and pantera are not thrash.
I honestly can’t choose between them, great video
Awesome riffs! How can one choose?? Luckily, we don't have to......we can enjoy them all ☺️
Fantastic job with your video, as usual......I always look forward to seeing what you are up to.
🙏🎸🎶🤘
I ❤️ those Kill em All riffs more than anything.
We want Mile Petrozza for the naxt one
Both intricately talented, unique on how they expressed their different approach to rhythm.
Thank for putting Fight 'til Death in this!!!
These two old lesbians are so supportive of each other's riffs. It's good sportsmanship.
The hetfield riffs are more clean and "perfect"
The Hanneman riffs are more chaos, more aggresive
Thats what i feel
Agreed
Hanneman 🤘🏿🤘🏿
agreed, james has the godly precision while jeff has the aggressive feel in his riffs
Wow. Amazing play~!
Nicely done !!
Dude its ridiculous how many metallica haters there are just because they dont want to seem mainstream they are that famous for a reason they seriously have the biggest assortment of amazing riffs its amazing
Absolutely....agree
Well...most of Metallica's best riffs were written by Mustaine. It's not that we're hating on Metallica, it's just that we don't believe the hype. Hands down, any time, any place, Hanneman is a better guitarist than Hetfield. Slayer is a better band than Metallica, especially during the 80s era. Currently Slayer isn't the same without Jeff or Dave, but they still hit you in the mouth much harder than Metallica and can still be called a metal band. A metal band who is doing Bob Seger covers kind of lost track of what metal is, and people who looked to Metallica for quality metal take issue with this because they simply don't produce metal anymore. Has nothing to do with being seen as mainstream. It has to do with a former metal band calling themselves a current metal band and playing radio rock n roll in place of metal. That would be like Slayer covering Lynard Skynard....just not metal.
To put it in simple terms, Metallica is the Nickelback of the big 4.
@@laurenfazenbaker9777 you sound bitter bro and i do not agree that any of the big four are better. And mustaine only wrote kill em all riffs and 4 riffs from ride the lighting so your wrong about that. Metallicas most recent album is better then the last 3 albums megadeth have put out, and anthrax sucks, and slayer has never had as many good songs as metallica. Plus who cares if they did covers of bands and songs they like, it doesnt make them any less metal the lead singer of cattle decap said he listened to britney spears the entire time he wrote Monolith of inhumanity, and that didnt make it any less heavy. The dudes have inspired more heavy metal bands then any other band in history and you have to respect that forever no matter what you think they are now. I Saw Metallica 2 years ago live and im seeing megadeth live in September with lamb of god and i will get back on this comment and tell you who was better but its guna be hard to top metallica they were as good as ever live even in there old age.
they are famous because they intentionally went soft to cater to the mainstream
@@jamiehayn naw bro they were already one of the biggest bands in the world when master of puppets dropped.

Yeahhh ! James does everything to win this battle 😁
Man these styles are so completely different.
It's what I love about metal. Two guys who are from the same era and subgenre can play completely differently and both can still be great.
I don't know if "Crionics" was created by Hannemann (I bet it was), but you should've included that riff... so amazing. Anyhow, what an awesome compilation you did. Cheers man and keep it metal!!

My favorite tone will always be RTL
Hanneman. sad but true...
The winner? ME! Getting to listen to killer music for so long. Nice Jeff axe BTW.
This was really good . James and Kirk are a part of my childhood. However if it wasn't for Hanneman and King I wouldn't have picked up the guitar back in 97. Decade of aggression taught me a lot. Then you did a Chuck Shuldiner vs the world..Yngwie locked and loaded . Yeah I subbed.
