He did. Fan of both fighters. They're equally great. But De La Hoya deserved the victory in this fight. However, as many have said, and he later admitted, you don't take rounds off; and he did.
Trinidad had absolutely no idea how to slip a jab.
Against Oscar, against Hopkins, against Winky, all he did was run head first straight into jabs.
Cause all his weight was on his front foot. 100% of the time. That's what made him such a huge puncher, but he was also SO vulnerable to jabs and short shots. He was so front heavy he just couldnt get out the way. DLH jabbed the hell out of him, Winky jabbed the hell out of him, and Hopkins did too. Massive weak spot.

Oscar fought the championship rounds just like Mayweather fought fairly recently .... by running and not attacking.... but that does not mean he was getting mugged and beat up. He clearly won that fight fair and square...
It's just that De La Hoya, if you notice, was tired. It's not easy to move for 36 minutes, but in the initial rounds he did enough to win.
I remember these days, although Oscar was a good fighter he would gas out in the later rounds.
The thing is that it is not easy to maintain the pace of the fight for twelve rounds.

To me, this was DLH at his absolute peak. I believe the fight was fairly given to Tito because Oscar’s strategy for the 2nd-half of the fight was bad and because Tito kept coming forward effectively. This should have been a DLH unanimous decision by a considerable margin (and the most significant victory in his career), but instead, he fought not to lose rather than fight to win while Tito’s sense or urgency, and relentless aggression definitely put him in a position to be considered the winner.
The strategy wasn't bad, but De La Hoya got tired. It's difficult to maintain a rhythm like that for 12 rounds.

Esa pelea fue un fraude. El De LaHoya que estabamos acostumbrados a ver, buscaba las peleas decidido a noquear a sus oponentes. En este combate se dedico a correr y lanzar golpes desde lejitos, "El propio gallito correlón" era evidente que le tenía miedo a la pegada de Trinidad. Los jueces fueron justos al quitarle la pelea, "Pa que sea serio".

When I watched this live I thought surely Oscar won.
After watching it objectively after all these years it was much closer than I thought.
Basically both boxers defense was excellent and no one really got hurt and did much damage.

This is a 12 round - 36 minutes CHAMPIONSHIP FULL FIGHT SHOW. Oscar spent too much time going backwards on purpose avoiding the confrontation. That is a very miserable boxing showmanship. Therefore, Oscar deserves to lose. Period. End of Story.
