Coming off an emotional victory over San Francisco, the 6-4 Cowboys are back home to play host to an 8-2 Green Bay squad battling the injury bug. Can Dallas extend their dominance over the Packers, or will Brett Favre and Co. finally dispel one of the strangest NFL curses of the 1990s?
Frank Gifford, Al Michaels, and Dan Dierdorf tell you all about it for ABC's Monday Night Football. Enjoy!

This was Barry Switzer's best coaching job with the Cowboys. The list of issues with this team was staggering, yet they somehow headed into a meaningless game at RFK with a 10-5 record. Irvin was suspended for the first 5 games of the season, back issues led to the retirements of Novacek and Haley, Lett was suspended for the latter part of year after being the front runner for Defensive Player of the Year, Smith played the entire season with bone chips in his ankle, and Aikman suddenly morphed into a JAG. Despite this laundry list of obstacles, Switzer's Cowboys dominated the Vikings and one could argue that if Irvin and Sanders were not injured the following week in Carolina, Switzer would have coached in his 3rd straight NFC Championship Game.

These Cowboys-Packers matchups of the mid 90’s are so fascinating to me.
From 1993-1996 they played each other seven times and the cowboys won every single game… 7-0. Not only that, they won every single game by double digits! This is insane because of how good Green Bay was at the time. Every single year from 93-96 Green Bay was top 5 in offense AND defense. They were a truly great team in those years and it just didn’t seem to matter against the boys.

1996 Cowboys one of my favorite teams ever. No Novacek and Haley. Irvin suspended first 5 games and we start 1-3.
Later in the year Lett who was playing like an All-Pro is suspended for 16 games. Then in the divisional vs Carolina our first offensive series Irvin breaks his collarbone.
Just having Irvin we probably beat Carolina in a tight game. If the others guys were in the lineup we probably give Green Bay a legit fight for best team in the NFL.

Very underrated... Beat Green Bay, New England, and San Fran... Went basically 9-2 with Irvin back, they rested starters for playoffs in last game... Annihilated the Vikings and would have won vs Carolina... Gotta go to GB where at the time the cowboys had never won at... Would have been interesting. But such a underrated team thats been labeled the start of the decline so it gets looked down on.

Really? The horrid offense of the Cowboys was the reason we didn't win another SB. Let's see how this narrative works.
Troy Aikman, Moose Johnston, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, Kevin Williams, Eric Bjornson, Mark Tunei, Nate Newton, Ray Donaldson, Larry Allen, Erik Williams.
Bunch of lazy ass players on offense with no disipline?? I blame Troy Aikman couldn't keep his offensive players accounbtable.
Odd how on defense where there were far more of "Switzer's guys" They led in the league in defense until a meaningless week 17 game. The defense happens to be the only reason we made the playoffs in 1996 as well.

@@supersexysega Jimmy was ruthless. He said himself “I don’t need friends, I need wins”. The team doesn’t lose the discipline and doesn’t become horrid on offense under Johnson. If they do, he replaces them. Switzer was a player’s coach and his attitude led to a lazy and horrid team.

Aikman and Emmitt just couldn't score points. Without the superb defence they wouldn't even have made the playoffs. I'm an Aikman fan and I think he was still a great player in 96, he beat the 49ers at Candlestick. But overall he had no luck on getting points.
