i play horn, and started to play trumpet just so i could play jazz, the horn is just not a really jazzy instrument most of the time, but when it is played well the horn is good for anything lol
Giovanni plays the horn so great that his artistry is one of my greatest finds via any media. I played horns and reeds and dreamed of playing a French horn. Playing these CZcams video's of Giovanni's is an important part of day, I watch all his motions while playing and I watch for the cool ways he takes leave of his horn at the song end. I would love to have transcriptions of all his recorded solos. Too much. One of my biggest finds on the internet is Giovanni Hoffer. Eric
this guy seriously inspired me to play on with my french horn not saying i'am quiting but his like inspiring me more even when i'am already inspired lol
it's just that you don't see horns in jazz bands, i mean it's usually only trumpet, trompone, all the saxes, a rhythm section, keyboard, and some guitars and basses. I play the horn and i have nothing against it to play in a jazz band, although i prefer the french horn sound in an orchestra or concert band (i usually play trompone parts that suck, cause when i transpose the notes end up being in the lower register, which some hornists aren't good at)
I started on French horn in 6th grade, but then switched to a "cooler" instrument as I knew jazz was the thing. But if I had heard Gio wail with his horn... my life course would have been very different. Way cool, Giovanni and crew!
Perhaps you should've read his comment. He said, "You have to really dedicate yourself to get this good and get a scholarship." You can't just say "I'm going to get good." If you play the horn to get a scholarship then chances are it won't work out. You should play the horn because you love the instrument, you love the sound, the music. Any other reason and it's likely you won't get far with it.
Keep dreaming kid, you have to really dedicate yourself to get this good and get a scholarship, and for full rides you need to be perfect in all ways, also stay academically strong because with an academic education even in music you can't go far, realistically speaking of course.
And you shouldn't judge the instruments difficulty if you're only in seventh grade, unless the school systems have changed drastically since I was younger and you guys play at a professional level... and I know it hasn't. The things that make the horn more difficult then other instruments don't become as apperent until you get into more difficult music.
Steinway Horn is harder for beginners because there are more partials then any other brass instrament. so it's alot harder for them to hit the right note
