This album was recognized by the library of congress as being culturally and significantly in music. Quite an achievement for 20 yr old kids I'd say.on master Kirk was not happy with many solos. He felt the recording times were rushed. Thus, sometimes he'd say it's not there and was told it's fine next ... Good example on song master there is a solo note played by mistake that was kept in. To this day he says it's hard to duplicate it. Crazy , yet true.

Patrick, an honest (and hopefully constructive) criticism. Most people who click on this video will skip to the parts where you listen to the actual songs, and they'll expect you to not talk over them.
It's much better to take it in as a viewer if you pause the songs, say what you gotta say and unpause the song (in a healthy amount, otherwise it'll be too disruptive). People who watch you listen to their favorites will expect you to give a reaction to the crucial parts of these classic songs, and when you talk over them about mixing details and such, they'll be more likely to press the dislike button because you'll miss them a lot, and it kinda looks disrespectful to the idea of "listening to something for the first time" anyways. Just a heads up, take it however you like, and be safe.

    • @parlamedia

I'd agree, he was busy doing anything but focusing on the music while the song was playing. I know that as a engineer he can pick up stuff easy, and I get it, but to an audience member like me it does come out a bit sloppy or "disrespectful". Like watching a film and talking over it, while arguably still focusing on stuff that is important to someone who is specialized in cinematography or special effects.

Maybe I've heard the songs a million times or maybe just Patrick's personality, energy, etc but I like the format. What I would suggest is that whatever crucial part of a song is coming up, the person who has knowledge of that in those group listening videos should hold up a "Quiet Please" sign like the "Fade Out" sign. Or even just nudge Patrick or give him a heads up he might want to listen to his next cool part. Just a suggestion but I think you live and learn so adjustments will be made as the channel grows. 46:37 target audiences in the 80's: stock car speakers and teenagers with boomboxes and at the best, cheap hi-fi units with two-way ported cabinets that have Q values that would rattle for days on a hard kick. So yeah, bass was dialed back a bit. You'll find that endemic, too. Remember it wasn't until the early-mid 90's when the average guy didn't have to literally hunt for music that would legitimately test a decent sound system, because producers knew that 95% of the playback methods out there would be clipping, clacking, gronking, and honking. They didn't want their work to sound like ass to the vast predominance of music buyers who didn't know of or couldn't afford a decent amp that would drive a good 'stiff' low-Q subwoofer.

I don’t need complex and technical lead guitar, and I LOATHE excessive production. If the band can’t reproduce it live, they shouldn’t do it. What I like is good lyrics, dynamic variation, and melody.
One of the things that made *Master Of Puppets* sound so great was James and Kirk’s discovery of the Mesa/Boogie C II amp. They each bought one, and those amps became the sound of the record-and the sound of metal for the next 20 years,.

Thank you guys for doing this. I have watched a lot of videos and interviews with guitarists trying to break down what gear was used and interviews with Flemming Rasmusen ( the producer). James recorded the rhythm parts and mostly he used his Gibson Explorer with Gibson "dirty fingers" pickups. He used Kirks guitar when doing the doubling of the rhythm parts ( to get a slightly different/thicker tone). Amp was Mesa Boogie mark IIC++. (the second plus was a mod done at the factory to change/increase the gain). Cabinets were 300 watt Marshalls with Celestion g12t-75 speakers per Rasmussen's studio notes. A common misconception was that the rhythm parts were Mesa's preamps slaved into the Marshall power amps, but that was only done for Kirk's leads. Some of the tracks were recorded downtuned and slower, then sped up to "normal speed" on tape. (downtuned so that when sped up they were at the correct pitch/ and slower recorded speed so it was easier to get the parts really tight etc...) This also had the effect of making the distortion sound unique/different. Most metal bands used Marshall amps at the time, so using the Mesa's really helped them to sound different. James recorded his parts first, then drums were recorded. When it was Cliff's time to record bass, he didn't like headphones. They set up Cliff in a separate room with big speakers playing the tracks, while his bass cabs were miked up in another room. This allowed him to jump around/get a live feel...Credit to Circle of Tone CZcams channel and various interviews with F. Rasmussen.

The Through the Never movie was filmed for 2 nights in Edmonton, Alberta and 3 nights in Vancouver, BC. I was at the Vancouver shows and the third night wasn't a full-on concert, rather it was Metallica doing pick ups, so many songs were only partially played, while "Fuel" was played twice in its entirety. While they did play "Ride the Lighting" and the chair descended during the song, the tesla coils were not in operation on the third night.
The stage was the most awesome setup I've ever seen, though it was created solely for the movie and was only used for about 10-ish warm-up shows in Mexico before going live before the cameras in Edmonton and Vancouver.
What's funny about the movie is it implies it took place in BC Place stadium, but it was really filmed at the neighbouring (and much smaller) Rogers Arena, home of the Vancouver Canucks. You can see the Canucks livery in the halls, as well. They did, however, play BC Place on their Hardwired tour, but the sound at BC Place is terrible and the shows are always a better experience at Rogers Arena.

Which makes sense because it was their second album with the same producer and everybody had learned a lot. I think some of the meandering arrangements from Ride were a stepping stone, they have lots of indulgent bits on Master but fewer "repeat a riff 8 times" parts and they bring back intro riffs to tie songs together.

While the master of puppets is the drug on the song Master Of Puppets, here (when you asked, Disposable Heroes) it´s the military, on Leper Messiah it´s the televangelist (or any other religious guru, if you will), on Sanitarium the psychiatrist, on Battery the anger or maybe the inner animal, on The Thing That Should Not Be, it´s a Lovecraftian demonic entity -
Damage Inc might be the only song which could have fit on the first record lyricwise, so it falls a bit out of the line, just as Orion, by which it is seperated from the other lyric containing songs. It might also be interpreted as a reprise of the first track, being controlled by rage, but maybe also the process of breaking free from the oppressive system, (as a reference to the finale of Sanitarium) what would both make sense.

I see Damage Inc more as a metaphoric way to talk about abusive companies, who don’t care about you, they don’t care if you are happy or not, just do what they say, and even if you don’t or you can’t they just throw you away and get another people to do your job “Blood will follow blood” “We chew and spit you out”
You can’t tell anyone about the abuse, no one’s gonna care and you could face severe consequences “Living on your knees, conformity, or dying on your feet for honesty”
Rest of the song isn’t that clear and may give to diverse interpretations, but that’s my take overall
      (English not my first language)

Patrick talks about all these weird things he is hearing on first listen that I've never heard after 200 listens but talks over the end of leper messiah where they say "yeah thats it" and misses it completely. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Patrick has a superpower of talking over the most important and integral parts of Metallica songs.

James records basically EVERYTHING and Kirk pretty much only records the solo’s and some of the separate lead stuff but all main riffs and rhythm is all James. Also MOP (the song) was recorded at a slower tempo and de-tuned for the sole purpose of speeding it up to make it sound ridiculously tight at that speed. That’s why it’s sliiiightly out of tune and it’s basically impossible for anyone covering the song on guitar to play it as tight as it is on the album unless they do the same thing

    • @TheJerseyNinja
      @TheJerseyNinja Před rokem +3

From watching the making-of docs, a lot of the time it seems the decision of what parts Kirk will play on the record has to do with wanting his guitar TONE to fill out the mix.

There's a time and place for all that talk. The intent for the viewer is also to see someone's face light up when they listen to it for the first time. Keep a notebook with you, jot down short hand points and let's discuss them in detail after the song is over. Cheers.
