@Mesa Herschel was the wise old man. When things got crazy, even for Rick, Herschel always stayed calm. Plus, the man was very useful as the group's doctor and farmer. Perhaps Herschel wasn't a leader type, but he was an amazing support for the group.

True.. but the second season was the biggest haul. It was so damn hard to watch. Season 1 was an awesome introduction into this world. Season 3 on, that's when this show really hit its stride!
If the seasons were 10 episodes long the show would be infinitely better. There are so many great moments and characters but fuck me do some of the episodes drag on. I stopped watching around season 7 which is a shame because I would have liked to know how it ends.

Then glenn hid under a dumpster and I had to catch up cause everyone was going crazy about it. Now I'm halfway through the current season. I think season 7 and 8 (much like season 2) need to be watched all at once. That's the only way they become super compelling. Otherwise it does feel like it's dragging. To me at least.

Andrea got bit because she wasn’t quick enough, T-Dog got bit because he stepped up and tried to help, Lori died because she wasn’t able to properly give birth, and that wouldn’t have happened if Shane had watched his back and shot the man who would’ve put him in a coma, the group got attacked at the quarry because they were loud, and Rick actually wanted to do something about that instead of staying put unprotected, Dale died because he went out at dark, Sophia died because she left the spot and didn’t listen to Rick, Shane died because he betrayed Rick, the people at the farm died because Shane pulled a gun on Rick and it fired. If I haven’t said enough, would you like me to go farther than the first three seasons?

During their conversation they get called outside and the leader of the Hilltop gets stabbed by someone who was assigned to kill the leader by the Saviors. The Saviors killed a teenager and took what they had and called it “service”. Not to mention, Daryl, Sasha, and Abraham already encountered the Saviors. They were going to rob them and kill them afterwards after they cooperated. So they went after an outpost. So don’t say that they didn’t have any reason to do what they did. They made a deal with the Hilltop for food because they were desperate.

Agree, Rick n Daryl are basically equals. They feed off each other and play off each other, like brothers. Except Daryl let's Rick take the lead because he is a vocal leader, while Daryl is the silent partner, this would be obvious to everyone in the group. This should have been Shane's roll.
Don't think that was a smile. More of a concerned look checking out how the others would stomach this situation. Also, Rick formally taking over full leadership also means a lot of responsibility is taken of his own shoulders.

To be fair the "dictatorship" mentality ended in season 3 when he said to the group that together they were the greater good. In S4-5 they just trusted him and were used to the apocalypse so they followed him as leader.
A dictatorship is necessary to survive though. You need a strong competent leader to choose and select strong useful people, you can’t have obese lards, physically weak people, immunocompromised, essentially people that are so dependent on others. Food and water is a must for everyone, but obese are going to eat it all, weak will take all the meds and water, you see what I mean?

Poetic. Shane hated Rick's leadership because he felt that Rick didn't have what it took to keep people alive and couldn't adapt to the new world, but by betraying him, Shane turned Rick into the leader he needed to be.
Shane become a part of Rick,his lessons and some of his habits stuck with Rick,it also helps since Shane wasnt deranged or psycho,he just adapted TOO fast to the apocalypse while everyone was holding onto a pipe dream,that everything could be the same as before.Killing Shane matured Rick alot.

If you go back to the scene when Rick kills those two guys in the bar you can tell after that Herschel realized that he needed Rick. He was always trying to get rick to be the leader he knew he could be.

I think Rick and Lori were having problems before this all happen. he got shot brought them closer again yet she ended up thinking he was dead and moved on with Shane. I actually think Lori was happy with Shane they got along even made a child in a very short time period, she loved him me thinks even though Rick was her husband. All the fans think Lori was mean or bad to Rick, I see it differently Shane was there for her and Carl no matter what yet Rick ran off all the time for no good reason in her eyes. Telling her he killed his best friend and wanted too is the key here then her own son put him down broke her heart its pretty simple really Lori loved Shane and Rick yet Carl just put down the father of her baby. YIKES the look she gave him was how could you do this to your own son, you couldn't kill Randal because of Carl yet you kill your own best friend! SAD REALLY. Rick should of never killed Shane, banish him yes kill him no.

Looking back, he kept talking about Shane and justifying what he did and ended it with “my hands are clean” then looked around. He was looking for approval because he felt guilty. What I love about this scene is tht not only did Rick confess to the group about killing Shane the night after, but he also admits that he wanted the best for EVERYONE and despite their situation he’s still clinging onto hope in finding safety for everyone he’s even willingly giving them a chance to leave but they know they can’t because Rick is their only hope of survival
What I love is how Hershel knew and understood what the power structure was instantaneously and was on-board. He knew a group in this situation needs a leader and that leader needs uncompromised authority - Dale understood it too, but had a penchant for petition rather than middle-ground. And through the series, Hershel was integral to helping the rest understand why it needed to be this way.
Rick Grimes is the whole reason I kept watching the show. He made the show what it is today, even when he went away. It's like he was still with the group...
Actually the show struggled for viewership even more with his departure, hell if Lincoln had stuck with it the show could have ran for 20 Seasons like Kirkman wanted.
Rick was such a compelling protagonist in this show, overall I think he's my favourite tv show character just for the amazing acting from Andrew Lincoln

Jon Bernthal actually wanted it to be revealed that Shane was holding an empty gun but they refused to do it but Jon still thinks that Shane sacrificed himself and it worked Shane's death created the new Rick Grimes who took down Negan and Terminus, Joe, the wolves he became a badass.

To be fair the "dictatorship" mentality ended in season 3 when he said to the group that together they were the greater good. In S4-5 they just trusted him and were used to the apocalypse so they followed him as leader.

A dictatorship is necessary to survive though. You need a strong competent leader to choose and select strong useful people, you can’t have obese lards, physically weak people, immunocompromised, essentially people that are so dependent on others. Food and water is a must for everyone, but obese are going to eat it all, weak will take all the meds and water, you see what I mean?

Poetic. Shane hated Rick's leadership because he felt that Rick didn't have what it took to keep people alive and couldn't adapt to the new world, but by betraying him, Shane turned Rick into the leader he needed to be.
Shane become a part of Rick,his lessons and some of his habits stuck with Rick,it also helps since Shane wasnt deranged or psycho,he just adapted TOO fast to the apocalypse while everyone was holding onto a pipe dream,that everything could be the same as before.Killing Shane matured Rick alot.

Counting the two in the bar and including Shane his self he let Rick know what type of people are out there now and eliminating them without hesitation was the only option. He did that all the way up until he met Negan in the forest that sad night. Abe and Glenn were not the only ones lost. We lost old Rick too but it transformed him into a new type of leader.

Never caught it before but the look on Herschel's face after this, he looks somewhat, proud and happy to see Rick stepping upto the plate and being the leader the group is desperate, considering Herschel is trusting rick with what remains of his family, I think Herschel is happy that he clearly choose the right man for the job
If you go back to the scene when Rick kills those two guys in the bar you can tell after that Herschel realized that he needed Rick. He was always trying to get rick to be the leader he knew he could be.

Lori’s facial expressions every time Rick gave a lecture pissed me off. It was as if she didn’t want to believe in him but she did it anyway because she was his wife.
The actress that played Lori did a good job of really giving off bitchy vibes.
She always looking at him like he was not enough or he was a monster. She was never happy with him.
Meanwhile, he’s doing exactly what she wanted him to do. If y’all remember the flashback in season 1 where Shane gives her the notification that Rick was shot. She tells her friend that she wants him to tell her off, and be more assertive. There you go Lori.
I think Rick and Lori were having problems before this all happen. he got shot brought them closer again yet she ended up thinking he was dead and moved on with Shane. I actually think Lori was happy with Shane they got along even made a child in a very short time period, she loved him me thinks even though Rick was her husband. All the fans think Lori was mean or bad to Rick, I see it differently Shane was there for her and Carl no matter what yet Rick ran off all the time for no good reason in her eyes. Telling her he killed his best friend and wanted too is the key here then her own son put him down broke her heart its pretty simple really Lori loved Shane and Rick yet Carl just put down the father of her baby. YIKES the look she gave him was how could you do this to your own son, you couldn't kill Randal because of Carl yet you kill your own best friend! SAD REALLY. Rick should of never killed Shane, banish him yes kill him no.

When he talks about him in a much later season, you can see that he never forgave himself, and until he saw Shane in his vision just before he “died” he wasn’t able to even try

kinda a shame that the show takes a nosedive in quality after the first few seasons.
What I love is how Hershel knew and understood what the power structure was instantaneously and was on-board. He knew a group in this situation needs a leader and that leader needs uncompromised authority - Dale understood it too, but had a penchant for petition rather than middle-ground. And through the series, Hershel was integral to helping the rest understand why it needed to be this way.
I was so happy for Rick at this point. He was trying to please everyone and everyone was questioning his decisions.
