We honour a pianist of immense talent, who left us too soon and who, to our knowledge, was the interpreter of the last part of the 20th century most possessed by the world of Scriabin (we recommend the excellent review by 'The Piano Files': www.thepianofiles.com/remembering-joseph-villa/). Without making us forget the legendary Vladimir Sofronitsky (we are in the process of compiling and remastering his best Scriabin recordings to present them to you), Joseph Villa was not one of Claudio Arrau's last pupils without reason. Like his master, his pianistic touch is of infinite poetry. His technique is terrific, and his palette of expression and sonorities are of a permanent creativity. He was supposed to record the complete works of Scriabin, but these two hours of recordings allow us to measure the extent of his talent. We begin to enter Scriabin's world through the easy door with poems and short pieces. Then the Mazurkas, easily accessible, take over. Finally, the etudes begin to reveal the world of maturity of the Scriabinian world to finally give way to the sonatas, a universe where the exploration is endless.

I'm so moved to find this on CZcams which helps make this incredibly gifted artist live on. I was a close friend of Joseph and this recording was done on my piano, NY Steinway & Sons, Concert Grand, "CD-226" (serial #345281, case # J-1399, circa 1954) here in New York City, at The Church of the Holy Trinity, 316 East 88th Street. After the Liszt albums, which were recorded in my tiny apartment, we decided to move my piano up to this far more suitable place for such an undertaking. To no surprise to those who knew him, these were all done in one take with no piecing and splicing together, as is often done. Only an outside force, such as wailing siren would cause a retake. I miss Joseph, taken away far too soon.

Joe was ny teacher at UCONN. Always available for his students, and many times he would pop into my practice room unannounced, with some insight or thought on the music, or he would play through something for me. Cherished memories of a great artist and a truly generous human being.❤❤❤

I am incredibly grateful that you have put all of these online! I was friends with this great artist in his last few years, completely in awe of him (as were many) and sadly aware of his impending departure... I've put a long tribute to him on my website and will add this link to it - thank you very much for this!

@@classicalmusicreference Thank you SO much! The moment I heard his playing in 1991 I was committed to doing what I could to help him reach as wide an audience as possible, and I have continued to do so after his passing with the gracious support of his partner and other friends. I am so glad that the internet has made it possible for his playing to reach such a wide audience, something that was not possible when cassettes had to go from person to person... Thank you again for this great upload!

Thanks for the excellent hommage to Joseph Villa, which I didn't know and is certainly a genius. If you are interested in another exceptional pianist which recorded many of Scriabin's piano works, I can recommend Ruth Laredo. She was the first pianist to record the whole Scriabin cicle of sonatas, or so claims Connoisseur Society, and also recorded preludes, etudes, poems... She also recorded the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff for CBS MAsterworks label.

"Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you don't feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day!"
