The whole issue with the PSN account mandate was that it makes Helldivers 2 inaccessible to people outside of the PSN supported countries. Removing the mandate but keeping the game unpurchasable in non-PSN countries does not solve the issue. And now they're going to do the same for Ghost of Tsushima's PC port. Are they allergic to more money and players?

You should inform yourself better, there's a world outside the US. Remember, unsupported does not mean unavailable, and it's hilarious that you think people in those countries haven't been playing for the last 18 years. The TOS is not enforced, it exists just for legal reasons.
It's the reason why you only see people from supported countries complaining about it, and no one from unsupported ones making a scene about it. Y'all need to grow up if you don't think MS, Google, Apple and a few others don't have this on their TOS/EULA's as well.

It's the same for older Nintendo games: if the company doesn't profit from those products as they're not available to be bought, then piracy isn't stealing any profit.

AAA gaming is not about making games, it's about making products and selling services. Once you understand that, it becomes much easier to ignore corporate generated hype.

    • @zericle1
      @zericle1 Před 21 dnem +7

The problem though is when a AAA game is good. AAA games aren't all made equal. As gamers, we should fight tooth and nail for good games and tear apart the bad ones. Otherwise companies will see what they can get away with and the others look and take notes. If we put our foot down enough, AAA gaming wouldn't be this hot mess. But that's the inherent problem, most people would rather keep playing their game that they like instead of worrying about the industry around it. And that's mostly that people don't know, don't care, or are too busy with their lives to care. Personally I think that if you want to call yourself a gamer, you should at the very *least* be advocating for better games, and not be complacent with trash.
Indie games right now are better than AAA, but they don't have the budget that AAA games have. With the right leadership AAA games can be amazing.
And I think it's silly to write off all AAA games, because it's not true that they're all bad. There are plenty of bad indie games, and to be fair, all games are products at the end of the day, *including* indie games.
Movies have trailers. New music albums are excessively marketed. The news. All media is a product.
The question is not what company it's made by, what matters is what passion was put into it. A game made by EA, for example can still be good. They just need the right leadership. Obviously that's lacking right now, but it can happen, is my point.
If you mean to say that the passion for making games as an artform is dying, then I think you're right. Games are much more watered-down of late, and on the safe side (for the most part). I hope that changes.
But gaming has always been a business from the start. As you mention, they're just products. But some are passion products. Products that have transcended being just a product, that we should protect from becoming just another product. As gamers we should be doing that, otherwise we lose, If that makes any sense.
We should judge a game by the guy at the helm of the ship, not whether the company making it is a AAA company. Leadership is what matters in all this, nothing else. As is shown time and time again, it's these CEOs that we need to take note of. We should be looking into why these types of people end up running these businesses. We should be demanding that ethics courses be taught in business schools. We should be rallying politicians to implement more laws to protect consumers and employees from these people's decisions. Video game employees should be forming unions.
My point with this text wall is that we shouldn't just ignore everything from some company just because they're AAA. Some of the best games were AAA, and to say that AAA games will always be just products and selling services seems a bit dramatic to me. Yes, the trend shows that AAA games are in the rough, and yes selling and producing is what AAA does, but that will eventually change. Someday people will have enough, and someday what is a AAA game will be of quality again, and have meaning. Right now that isn't the case, but that can change and will change. The rampant greed isn't going to last forever, at some point someone's going to come in and do something about it, regulate it, the whole 9 yards. At the current pace these "leaders" at these companies are making awful decisions, their AAA empire will fall and a former indie studio will rise in it's place. And hopefully they can make better AAA games than those before them. They just need a head on their shoulders. It's my belief that the passion that devs have for their game is what truly makes the sales of games, along with a bit of smart marketing. People wanna play something good, not something bad, and most people aren't going to get fooled twice. There's only so many times this will happen until it boils over.

Sadly, we players are not Sony's customers. We are their products. Sony's customers are their shareholders. Same with EA, Microsoft, etc. It's not just about making money now, it's about showing that the company will make money in the future and having PSN expand further into the PC world is one way to demonstrate that. Data collection leads to targeted marketing, which leads to potential increased sales, which is what they're "selling" to their shareholders. Sony probably figures it will make more gains with its shareholders if they hold the line on PSN linking being mandatory than by letting it be optional, even if they burn down the house doing so.
The only thing that changed this course was the massive and very very public backlash that Sony couldn't sweep under the rug and hide from their shareholders. Now that things have settled down somewhat, Sony is most certainly planning to reinstate the PSN requirement in the future, which they will tell their shareholders means those fat future sales aren't gone, they're just a little delayed. Even if it is stupid. Even if it is a lie. Even if everyone knows that this is an incredibly backwards thing to do. So long as their shareholders think that line go up, Sony will do whatever it takes to keep them thinking that.
TL/DR: All Sony cares about is creating value for shareholders, even if that means setting fire to a golden goose game and ruining it's own reputation. Same with MS, EA, etc. Line must go up, no matter the cost.

Just because the PSN requirement for HD2 is rescinded for players in certain countries doesn't mean it's a 'win'.
The negative reviews were basically the devs' main weapon to dissuade Sony from enabling the PSN requirement on HD2 in the first place.

Pretty surprised with Nintendo being honest. The one company i thought would really go down some silly paths was them. The switch ecosystem is incredible though. Banging out titles every year, never really any discounts ever on games so not much incentive to wait for sales unlike Xbox & PS titles and that leads to a good resell price for you. I think even Mario Kart 8 is still a full priced title despite it originally being a wii u title. Consoles running on ancient 2015 mobile nvidia tech and not killing the company financially making games or consoles either so it seems a secure place to work and make games for. With the wind sony got up during the PS4 i was really expecting them to come in hot with the 5.
Sucks what they're doing with copyright stuff & Modding scenes but just from a consumer standpoint i feel Nintendo and Valve are the last two. Heck even with Steam though i'm incentivised to wait for sales meaning less growth numbers for devs. 24' has another 7 months to go though. Could have another wii u disaster with the switch 2.

If your partner does something insane, your first question to them would be, 'why are you doing this?' The fact though that they're fighting Sony on this, regardless if they're keeping mum on Sony's reason(s) forcibly or not, is the more important takeaway of course. Just saying he also ought to share what he knows from their discussions, ie if he isn't legally bound to keep silent about it. What did Sony say in response, and when did they say it?

That's why Sony backpedaling on PSN linking issue was not a victory yet, just a partly winning act. The demand should have been about bringing it back to stores but nooo, let's change our reviews back, "operation cleanup', yeah. If you do it, do it 100%.

They learned that if you want to force people into doing something dumb and counterproductive, you don't start on a beloved IP. You start with the ones that won't make too much noise so "dumb" becomes the norm.

I think it's clear why Sony did this. They want to put back the PSN requirement but they are going to wait 6months or so till things blow over. With those countries banned from purchase, they think it will be easier to accept once the requirement is reinstated.

Yup. Once country hits about 50% of the base in that area form people that signs up willingly to psn. They're say it requires there now.

    • @davidl6272

@@beezzarro Steam will, if Sony tried to add it again they'd get mass refunds again, all people have to say in their refund request is that "Sony altered the user agreement, I no longer agree with it." and Steam will 9/10 refund you, that's how a lot of people got refunds who had like hundreds of hours when all this stuff first started. They *might* try again, but I find it doubtful. They're not used to dealing with a third party platform like Steam, it's not just a storefront, its an entire ecosystem, they can't just change stuff like that out of nowhere. It might be their IP but it's being played/bought on Steams ecosystem, and that gives Steam a lot of power because they control refunds etc, Sony hilariously tried to do what they've been doing for years in their own playground, good thing they're not there anymore. Now if Sony made their own storefront...well that'd be a different story.

I think the main thing stopping Sony atm is the EU's GDPR (and UK's equivalent).
Sony has a pretty solid foothold in those regions, but if they slip up, there's a good chance they'll get sued by the EU and UK, and potentially get the game, or even the whole of Playstation, banned from operating within those countries.
In other words, there's a good chance they lose even more if they pull this shit again xD
