the show is also top tier so don't let the fandom affect your opinion, it has a basic idea but it explores it to every extent possible, it has a really realistic resemblance of society, it's core is heroism so you don't cringe when the characters are heroic, because they are actually what heroism is supposed to be. the show is breaks SO many shonen stereotypes, has every single one of its characters using their brains and being a main character, it also gives value to realistic elements in fights and events, like most likely the fights are what they would be if quirks existed in our world, the show uses them as we would use weapons in real life instead of your typical shonen power-ups and power of friendship. the show also has a subtle and consistent storyline that actually hides unexpected depth to it. people do complain about the slice of life parts which sometimes do take a lot of time, but they only would bother someone who doesn't understand that there's an anime about school life that happens to have action in it. literally anyone who complains doesn't value healthy teen life.
anyway back to Midoriya, which was easily one of the best shonen protagonists once he came out (because he was the only one at the moment with the following qualities) he did have that very heroic inspirational aspect to him, but at the same time without the airheadness and stupidness that we were used to. he came out actually smart, actually attentive, he noticed things on people and actually used them. he also is a polite, helpful, well-mannered person that knows how to act with others. all while having that special fan-boy face to him which made him adorable and relatable. he is your typical 1000-push-ups a day protagonist, but he actually is the realistic embodiment of it because you can see him developing along the way. he is one main character that doesn't irritate me with his stupidness and mostly acts right in every situation. he is one character that you can get inspired by because of his determination, seriousness, devotion, gratitude, kindness. he is meant to have a good heart in his anime world and he has one of the strongest ones no denial. all while being so realistically flawed like crying easily etc.
boku no hero academia is an anime about pursuing dreams, going beyond, and "plus ultra". it is literally here to teach the youth those valuable lessons. and it does perfectly with its fire hype scenes while not being cliché or unrealistic. the fact that it has that weird fandom is only a proof of two points: 1- the characters have perfect chemistry between them, all while having so little romantic interactions (because the show is mostly so clean and it isn't romantic focused), which is why all the thirst for ships. 2- the fact that it got all the 14 years old held by chokehold is only a proof that the anime succeeded perfectly in conveying its message.

Where the fuck is Gintoki from Gintama?
personally, Kaiji from Kaiji Ultimate Survivor is my favorite anime protag period. Close second and third are Guts and Goblin Slayer for their on the fly close combat reflexive thinking. Kaiji has a lot of personal growth and flaws and overcomes some insane odds, engaging the viewer in his thought process in ways I see few other shows attempt
