Monogatari really wouldnt be difficult to follow if they didnt throw the narrative into a blender
Does makes it a more engaging experience.
@@shira_yoneyeah the act of deciphering the story and arcs means you can’t just passively go through the series and grapple with all of the philosophies the author is purposing
The first time I watched it I had to look up the release order
It isn't difficult to follow if you use your head a bit
@@santiagojara8056 its quite literally out of order
This is my favorite series of nearly any media, let alone anime. I’m super interested on hearing someone else’s interpretation. This show literally changed how I interact with other people in my real life, and made me a more kind person in general. It’s no exaggeration to say this show made my life better after viewing.
I've always valued how the Monogatari series highlights the perspectives of adolescence compared to adulthood and how teenagers grow through life. Every non-adult character sees their world through fairly black and white lenses, while the perspectives we get from Kaiki and Oshino are nuanced, grey, and not always correct but broadly consistent, the way most adults live. Kaiki and Oshino both live consistently with their own values (Kaiki toward skepticism, egoism, and perspectivism and Oshino toward harmony, self-determination, and respect), but aren't so rigid to them. Kaiki's involvement in the story highlights this best, as he's seen by Araragi and Senjougahara as a petty fake villain, when he's truly just a middle-aged shabby (tsundere) conman. He genuinely tried to help Senjougahara by (though this is more implied) bringing the crab diety to her to help a young girl endure a terrible life. This ends up being a blunder on his part, but he then succeeds when he helps Sengoku move on from the life she's imposed on herself. He didn't really change across the series so much as we just saw more of who he really was.
However, we see all the adolescent characters gradually change and mature in how they view the world as they have more experiences, yet they always maintain that teenage stubborn self-righteousness. It's so realistic to how teenagers actually think and develop mentally, where most anime or young adult series fail to, either by making teenagers think and act like irrational adults, or portraying them like overemotional simplistic caricatures.
Also SHAFT is based in general, making a HEAVILY dialogue-driven series constantly look gorgeous and keep your attention.
you made more substantive analysis of the series in this one comment than this entire plot-summary video did
@@BradleytheDavisTo be fair the guy really just analyzed arc-by-arc while giving some hints here and there.
If this was a full-blown in-depth video about monogatari I'm sure he would address what that comment said and much more.
Old shaft be different man they had a very distinct style in both animation and direction that was just so unique
You... You did it. This is the first time I've seen someone talk about monogatari series so smooth and persuasive. Truly best video to describe this masterpiece story love it
We need a “making sense of Monogatari part 2” for the 2nd season - Owarimonogatari seasons
Bet you are happy, ask and you shall receive is a quote I think is fitting for the situation.
@@fitzwits thank you very much sir, I appreciate you for making these in depth vids on mono🙏🏽
@SossboyOG huh? I'm not sure I understand the joke man. I'm just saying it's cool you asked for part two and not one month later he drops a video that is equal quality with the first video and exactly what you wanted.
A retrospective on the Monogatari series as a whole ? That's an instant sub my guy
Just up to the end of Nise, sadly. I hope to see coverage of the subsequent arcs, all the way up until Zoku Owarimonogatari and Hanamonogatari.
holy, you weren't kidding. You really did make sense of monogatari
people die when they are killed.
True 😃
Yes... Yes they do, my guy.
Just because you are right, doesn't mean you are correct
_I am the bone of my sword_
Don't do suicide that shit kills you
This show’s about so much more than saving cute girls…but it’s also totally about cute girls and some uncomfortable situations. It’s like the show throws creepy fan service in your face, leaving it up to you to be mature enough to see the big picture. I love the show -and the fan service, but it’s awkward to recommend.
you're on the money there lol
I like it as a sort of built-in gatekeeping. Can't get past the loli jokes? Tough, Araragi sees lolis as defenseless and more relatable as part of his character development, just like he hyperfocuses on female bodies because he's a horny teenager. It's a stage he has to grow past. But actually explaining that to people is like telling them to "git gud" at Dark Souls. Simple words from one fan to another do little to actually help someone get past the rough stuff. Either you sit down and co-op it with them, showing them until they're ready, or they bounce off because either it's not their preference or they can't handle it yet.
Also, I never showed my little sister this series, but the mere threat of brushing her teeth for her kept her cavity free. 10/10 series, would recommend.
You know…when I first started this video I did not think it was the series with THAT scene….
what scene..
@@JosephJoestar-ld3qv cat scene?
toothbrush scene probablyyy
monogatari has so many "THAT scene"s that I don't even know which one you're referring to.
I have lost so much helping others out of a selfish self-loathing. This anime is cheaper than therapy.
I can understand that. It hurts when you do the right thing, whether moral or by sheer want/need most of the time, but things still don't go your way before or afterwards.
It's a necessary flaw in all people, and the only thing we can do is learn to disregard it sometimes, yet we don't truly know the right time to help others or to disregard it.
@@nicholasdaniel2778 I chose to become a machine and deny whatever few emotional threads I had left until I'm convinced I'm a psychopath. 👍
@@nicholasdaniel2778helping good people in need is allways right thing to do
its one of the most important lessons this story gives imo. how it deconstructs and actively criticizes koyomi's saviour complex as being a self destructive thing disguised as selfless heroics. it's not that he is in the wrong for wanting to help people, it shows that it's actually one of his positive traits, it's what made hitagi fall in love with him.
the problem is that he doesn't just want to help people. he wants to actively save people from themselves, he wants to die for their sake. he does this because he hates himself and doesn't think he is worthy of the help he tries to give others he actively denies it for a lot of the series.
this is why oshino leaves town, because he sees koyomi's cycle of self destruction and knows that there is only one person who can save him from it, himself. adhering to meme's philosophy of helping others to save themselves he helps koyomi save himself by leaving & letting him figure things out on his own.
koyomi is willing to die for anyone who's having a rough time, he puts his mind & body on the line time and time again for others because he wants to die a hero in the eyes of others, that is a huge problem not just for him but others as well and it's pretty much what the entire first main big story arc of Monogatari encompassing First, Second & Final seasons is leading towards resolving, and the way Koyomi resolves it is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in a story
@@Lin_Eileen it's easier to live for others. Easier to abandon your own interests which might fail or not live up to expectations. Easier to sleep in a haze of constant second hand survivalism.
My god please continue this, I love how you presented the flow of the story that mainly confuses on the narrative importance.
Monogatari series in my perspective is like watching a book being read to the viewer and this video covers the important story beats that makes its story interesting.
For the others who wants to watch the series itself, just go do that cause this video focused on the story but the show is action packed and hilarious if you know the Japanese word play and joke beats/references.
I have watched every installment of the monogatori series including movies in release order and got very frustrated with the pacing, koyomi's perverted acts, lengthy monologues and fan service after the first season and really fell out of love with the series for many years after finishing it.
I want to say this video essay, distilled like this and in chronological order has brought me back to realize it actually is a really interesting anime adaptation with worthwhile things to say about mental health, peoples personal motivations, flaws, and how they relate to others. Loved this video thank you so much!
getting frustrated with this story is a totally fair reaction because imo the series is transgressive, it actively is trying to frustrate the reader/viewer in order to make them look at the series with a more inquisitive mind instead of mindlessly consuming it. a lot of art house media does this because it's an effective way at drawing out more honest and emotional responses from people, but that doesn't mean those responses must be positive. having a negative reaction to things like koyomi's perversions and fan service is just as valid as having positive reaction to it or no reaction at all... it's all meant to make you think and express yourself honestly. it's the beauty of this story is it's so open for interpretation and I think the vast majority of interpretations people have hold some validity to them.
I would say "You do not know how hard it is to explain or onboard other people to this anime" but you know exactly that pain my brother. Thank you for this focused explanation i can only hope more give this series a chance.
So true, I feel awkward recommending it, even though it’s great. I think that’s why the Hitagi arc came first, it’s the least morally dubious…
Thank you very much for tackling this huge task of an anime. It really isn't easy trying to follow the main plot and timeline of this anime but that's what I love about it.
It's very EVERYWHERE and jumps around all over the place. I love how unique it truly is on telling whatever story it's telling and the way they went about it.
I know alot of people hated this anime and kinda story telling, but I always felt memorized and in entranced about the whole thing. Thx again for part 1 and I can't wait for part 2.
I remember binging through this series in one fell swoop during the pandemic, and I fell in love with the art, music and story. I remember reading through chapters of Kizu before tackling each of the movies, and that hit like nothing else
Since you started this series of videos, I was wondering when you’d tackle this especially since I knew you had a lot to say already from your previous videos, and I think you did a phenomenal job.
Keep up the great work, guy. Can’t wait for the rest of the series.
Also Hanekawa is best girl I will die on that hill
I have had an issue trying to stay on track with watching this series for years. Watching your video in tandem with each season gave me a lot of clarity and understanding without giving the entirety of the story away. Thanks for giving me the chance to fully get to experience the story by myself 😊
I'm glad you're still talking about this series. I'm currently on my 3rd/4th rewatch, this time I got a friend to watch it with me and he's enjoyed it. I watched your vids from years ago then noticed you put out this video a few days ago. Super well put together, thanks for making this. Also I'm a bit out of the loop - I don't really know what Off or Monster Season is about but I'm excited nonetheless
This got me interested in a series I never planned on watching 👏🏼 I need the rest as soon as possible
I HAVE to sub, watched this all on the bus and was just mesmerized by the quality. Thank you so much for the video and I’m now frothing at the mouth for more
Going through your videos I vastly prefer these in depth analysis’ of classics. Keep it up.
my favorite up and coming small youtuber FINALLY uploaded, and its on one of my favorite series. Thank you sock sensei
its always nice when you upload because i know what classic to watch next
Your content is both fantastic and consistent. Both being unheard of in this youtube anime sphere
Thank you so much for this. I was at rock bottom of my life when I watched this series. My life is on track now. This just gives me nostalgia.
Pleeeeease, we need a continuation, i get a feeling that im going to do a rewatch because of your analysis :3c
ANOTHER SOCK SENSEI’S MAKING SENSE OF VIDEOS YAYAYAYA- no but akndkn these videos fill me with happiness. I’ve been looking for long videos and these are just perfect- I may not ever watch these series but the way these series are explained and analysed is something I will always look forwards to!! This is also such a breath of fresh air amongst the brain rot my youtube fyp regularly sends me lol. Sending many thanks and even more love!!
Pleaseeee work on a part 2 for this when you got time. I would love to hear your vocalization and emotional/mental breakdown of the latter parts of the show such as owarimonogatari and koyomimonogatari
this convinced me to rewatch the series. its one of my favorite series amongst heavy hitters you have reviewed like serial experiments lain, monster and neon genesis, flcl and perfect blue. i hope in the future u review series like welcome to the nhk and tatami galaxy.
After viewing, I wanna add that I loved it. You do a great job of approaching each story at levels of interpretation that it was could potentially mean, then drawing all those narratives into a conclusion. Especially near Kaiki arc where you delve into the nuances of him being a pseudo antagonist. I loved it, I hope this blows up so more people watch this show.
Thank you so much for making this- it was a great analysis and a much-needed refresher on the show ahead of Off Season and Monster Season!
Incredible breakdown of the Monogatari series! You were clear, concise, and thoughtful all the way through. Can't wait to see the next video!
I remember when there was mainly just the Eva video in this series and I was so hungry for more, but now all my favorite shows are getting their own entry and I'm eating the best I ever have
Definitely gonna keep this video in mind when i rewatch the series soon
Amazing video, so much quality as always, thank you sensei
This video is simply a masterpiece thank you for your hardwork.
The beat recap video on bakemonogatari and the movies. Keep it up. 💪💪
Here I find myself drawn into another incredible video essay about another incredible anime series. THANKS AGAIN SOCK!!!
Existentialist all the way through
SOCK SENSEI MONOGATARI VIDEOS ARE BACK!!
Wow... Just.. wow. There's just so much. Yet, again I find things here and get some sort of closure to things that I deal with currently. Please continue with your analysis of this wonderful series as well as doing Steins;Gate 0 as well, man.
Please make a part 2!
Interesting viewing this later in life, when I watched it early highschool I just like the jokes and the interactions the characters had. Watching this now made me realize all the deep core values that were hidden behind the surface 😊
Hello mr. Sock, i can't wait for a premiere of this video, i hope u will be making more of them and keep up ur schedule as u did earlier, also how about u make a code Geass video next, or maybe a haruhi Suzumiya one, how about a ergo proxy one as well, nonetheless keep up the good work im counting on u
so hyped cannot wait, hope it has great story telling like his evangelion videos
Every person's life needs a monogatari experience at least once
Awesome coverage, made understand and appreciate the anime more.
i watched this video and feel moved in a strange yet familiar way. i loved this and i have a feeling this series is going to become very special to me
what an mazing video!!, going to watch part 2
You are way to good at this
First of all
Thank you for this amazing video for a series that brought sooo much happiness to my childhood and pretty much the only anime I bothered to keep up since.
But in a detailed story like this it just sticks out so much more how nadeko snake was a weird ark.
Nadeko caused her own problem, not by rejecting someone but by doing it so bluntly and by doing odd rituals in a snake shrine. And even if you watch the ark as a situation where araragi caused a problem so he has to solve it it still leaves the cursing of both nadeko and the boy as their own fault. Nadeko is the only chapter where someone got clearly and obviously saved by a unrelated party.
Nadeko didn't face anything but araragi in little cloths on.
Karen faced her hypocrisy
Tushiki arguably wasn't even a problem and more a question
So nadeko always stuck out for me
if you keep dropping bangers like this imma have to buy a billboard for you or smthn
Unreal video 👏. The script and delivery is just wow
Are you gonna make more Monogatari videos after Off & Monster Season anime starts this July? I'm so hyped for it, and there are so few videos that cover the novels that come after the main story.
Thank you for this. I was always confused as to why he didn’t go with hanakawa but you’ve explained it in such a clear way
Bless you sock sensei
Well, you got yourself a new sub and I'm looking forward to part 2.
I love a good Monogatari breakdown and I love your analysis.
Dang it dude I got super hype when I saw you covered this and now Im left with blue balls waiting on part 2 lol
I love the deep dives you have. :)
Thank you for making this.
Now I'm def subbing for the next part
What luck on my part, i had dropped the series for a long time right after finishing nisemonogatari, and you come in with a perfect refresher syllabus when im considering picking it back up.
Im pretty sure i did manage to understand the series properly on my first watch, but it was still fairly helpful to see it taken from a linear story perspective, especially without me needing to watch through borderline porn while my mind is still reeling from trying to figure out the plot.
Need part 2 ASAP need to hear owari analysis 🤩🤩
do you have a list of the music you used throughout the video? I like a lot of them, especially the song used from 35:22
Hey man I love your content so much and I think it would be really cool to see one of these types of videos on gurren lagann
And to think this is really just the first season. If you’re watching this video, haven’t seen the series, and any of this seems good to you, I gotta highly recommend you watch the series before the second season overview comes. It is really worth experiencing for yourself. If you like watching shows that have genuine deep messages on humanity/philosophy, growing up, and personal development this show will touch you… provided you can understand the subtext within and outside of the “fan service”
This video was very disappointing to me. I am a huge fan of the series, so I'm always happy to see someone discuss the series and offer their perspective. But frankly, he did not offer much of any actual critique or analysis of any of the arcs. He just summarized their plots one after another....
This is the last kind of video I'd want anyone unfamiliar with the series to watch, as he literally just spoiled the entire plot of season 1 by regurgitating it. Your comment, though, is one that I really appreciate seeing from other fans, cuz you're right about how to shill it to other ppl lol.
@@BradleytheDavis this is the last video id like someone unfamiliar with the series to watch as well.. which is why i put this comment here. But at the same time there’s certainly no shortage in the world of people who lack the cognitive ability to just sit and watch 3 seasons of almost pure dialogue and offering something like this for the bare bones of the plot I don’t think is a bad thing. I think a lot of people could benefit from the stories in this series..
Now you saying soon makes me want to see more right away y'know
Wish I came here from a far future
But yes, crazy good analyzing, take your time since this whole thing was incredible to watch ;P
I'm so happy my favourite youtuber has covered my favourite series to where it is so far!
He didn't really say anything of substance
@@BradleytheDavis he said whats needed to be said from his perspective, if you want more then rewatch and think for yourself since thats the type of seeries mono is and it depends on your perspective itself
@@tama5380 I know. you're not telling me anything i'm not already aware of.
As far as his video goes, though. I don't think he said enough to warrant such a ridiculous length. the substance of this video is razor thin
@@BradleytheDavis i agree with the video being surface level plot summary but clearly a lot of work has gone into it so stop hating on this guy's video on every reply, make your own concise video of your critical review of monogatari instead of pointless hating & I'll be the judge of it and trust me i love monogatari as much as you do
@@tama5380 fair enough. maybe i will.
Thank you sir, now I have to rewatch this show for the 5th time
Loved watching the OVAs, but I'd really love a follow-up to this video.
Yayy sock sensei uploaded
damn this video, its so well made
Oh baby. Finally someone made a comprehensive Monogatari video
I don't think anyone has made such a clear and through assessment of this series.
Amazing video genuinely have watched it twice and I love it
Great video. Might actually have to save the latter half for later.. Haven't caught up with the more recent seasons, but put on one I didn't recognize the other day to show a friend and it just so happened to be a scene with one of the sisters in the bath and he was like, "What the fuck is wrong with you?"
xD
Your "order of events" anime explanations are accessible, near thesis-level PSAs. Gratitude!
P.S. - This channel should, and likely one day will, have MANY more subscribers. Best to you on that journey
Right around ~51:00, a question sparked in my head. When do Hanekawa and Senjougahara actually become friends?
The video at this point asserts that Senjou fears Hanekawa, but I don't remember having that feeling on any of my viewings at this point. I think she's genuine in caring for her situation, or at least caring for Araragi's sake as he certainly cares. Additionally all of the kids seem pretty relaxed at comfortable with one another at the closing of Bake while they casually reminisce about Oshino.
However we do know come Nise that Senjou does fear Hanekawa, or at least fears the influence Hanekawa could have over Araragi and their relationship given Hanekawa's theat of asking him out. However, however we also know that come Neko Shiro they're very close friends, or at leasts that's how Senjougahara feels given all she does for Hanekawa this arc.
It's nothing major ofcourse, but i think it's fun to thin about and i appreciate this video sparking that train of thought. It's entirely for reasons like this that i love to listen to people discuss their perspectives on Monogatari :D
Would I end up watching the Monogatari series again after this video? Absolutely, it's like I'm reviving the moment I first fell in love with it.
it took me about a week to watch everything, i know for a fact somethings went over my head, but even with whatever i was missing i still grasped the general points and loved just about all of it thru and thru, its a bit of a hard reccomend tho just because you have to have some serious reading speed and comprehension to cover all the dialouge for subtitles.
Thank you. This video has changed the way i think about myself and others, i appreciate u and the story u told for helping me with that change
thank you for another great video :) this anime looks really great and i would like to watch it sometime. it reminds me of tokyo ghoul a little bit. im a big fan of your channel and always look forward to new uploads.
I appreciate it!
11:30 this just makes the warming Ononoki gives him in tsukimonogatari hit all the more harder. After killimg Tadatsuru, making him promise he wont become like her, that he wont become a monster
The sayounara genuinely sent chills down my spine
ill hold of watching this vid cause i just started mongatari series
and ill watch that first then make sense of it
Kizumonogatari ist probably my favourite work of fiction
I should rewatch the series man just watching the first 25 mins of video there were a lot of detaild that i missed
part two of this one day?
honestly seeing your summary of this and evangelion really makes me realise how much i’m missing, would love to see more of these vids bro
Lets go! Favorite anime ever right here, I can't wait!
Great video! It’d be a really nice watch if you did ( Black Lagoon ) next :)
What is some of the music used in this video?
MORE MONOGATARI CONTENT IS COMING????
WOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!!!
You've earned a subscription.
Absolutely marvelous
I feel like Monogatari is in the same boat as Madoka in a way.
Someone stop this man he’s too good
plz make a video on the rest ive never understood it omg
Love it even though I don't agree with many stand points in it. Like the thinking that there isn't any good and evil only shades of gray and people with circumstances. It just dosn't make sense because even in the example that was given. That being killing one to save another. Those are two actions. One of saving and the other of killing. One and the other can be either good or evil depending on the circumstances. The reasoing behind why one could choose to do those two things is what makes them a good or evil person while what they accomplish makes them good or evil actions. That's at least what I think but many other things and messages are great and I agree with them.
Holy shit, an hour and a half just for season 1, don't mind if I do
