Many people, after finishing their studies are often super excited when they land their first job. This is even more the case when they start as Management Trainee or Graduate Trainee, since these programs often promise development and fast progression. Oftentimes however, people get stuck in their position as they get to comfortable in their new jobs.
Here in this video I want to talk about how the early years of your first job and your time as a Management Trainee is the perfect time to find out more about your career aspirations, and use the resources and opportunities to pivot in a different direction if necessary.

Wow. Pretty good insight. I'm in a management trainee program now, but this pandemic had put a furloughed on us. Even though I may not see myself in this specific position, I like the fact that I could move to a different department within the company. This gives me motivation to stick with the company. Would you say networking is important and how can you stand out from other colleagues?
To plan your move intentionally: Talk to people from different positions, if possible build relationships with more senior people in the departments you are interested in. Also talk to your manager and HR manager early enough to explore your options - what will it take for you to be able to move?
To 'stand out', be a top performer (as in actually contribute), but also create awareness around your achievements. Try to get involved in cross-departmental projects, so that you are exposed to more people. Build good relationships not only with you boss/manager, but also with your skip-level manager. Always be known to be someone who solves problems and get thing done, but also as a leader in anyway you can. Helping and supporting other colleagues and taking charge. Information is key. Usually it's through informal talks that you'll find out about open positions and opportunities in other departments.

Thanks for this advice! Im close to graduating and really want to make it in Management with a long term aim on the highest level ofcours :D! At the age of 22, before graduating, I got my first management job (at an SME), with a total of 15 people in my teams. I really enjoy this but want to use my Business Administration degree for a larger corporate position, I'm expecting to graduate in july.
Would it be feasible to do a management traineeship after having 2 years of management experience at an SME, or should I look for a more suiting path?
You'll never know until you try! There are rarely fixed rules for hiring, and as long as you have the right skills (and often personality) and strong intention to be part of a management trainee program, you'll have a good chance! My first impression is that you're very motivated and eager which is very important. Good luck!

I have been recently selected as management trainee in chemical industry Chennai side from my college placement with salary 39k per month + transport after 1 year salary hike will start. they said 6 month training and then operation manager. I'll be working in a specific department of my choise after I complete training. Hope I can perform good when actual training starts 🤞 Your advice seems to help me so much ☺️ thank you

Do you think you can study part time on distance learning (no exams just assesment) and work as trainee manager
It really depends on the company, as management trainee programs are not the same everywhere. Some are more time-intensive while others slightly more relaxed. It also depends on your energy and concentration levels. Some people can power through in the evening working on other things or studying, while others are just k.o. after coming home from work at 7pm.
I joined as management trainee in tcs , this is my 1st month of the project , they given role as testing analyst for workday HCM , but to be Frank I don't know what exactly it impacts my career , is it relates to my designation? If not what kind of position given by organization for management trainees commonly
Take some time to see how it fits you. If not, then talk to your HR/mentor and see if you can move. All the best!

Thanks, really appreciate it! The basic of it is relationship building (as with all people). And because of that, the dynamics will highly depend on the person. But in general, relationships with mentors go both ways, as in: Mentee wants advice/guidance/encouragement, and (good) mentors are interested in providing guidance (by teaching they also learn something), helping out their younger colleagues, and oftentimes it can also make them feel good about themselves. I think what a mentor would expect from a mentee is that they are proactive, don't waste their time, and add value to the conversation by asking relevant questions. Being appreciative of their time goes a long way.

Not sure if it’s possible after a year, it will depend on your particular program. In my MT program trainees were able to request a rotation after about 1.5 years, or at the end of the program.
I want to change my major to Business Administration. Do you think I can get this job with no management experience? I want experience this so can make my change more easily.
Do you want to change majors or get a job right now? Everyone starts at zero. And everyone has management experience (in their personal life, or perhaps in sports, school, etc.) If you don't have experience on the job yet, tell the interviewer about your managerial capabilities in other areas of your life. They'll get a sense of whether you're capable or not from how you explain it.
