For those new to chess, or just unfamiliar with tournament chess, and unsure who won this game, here is how you can tell. In this game, and in most major chess tournaments, the players play on a DGT board. DGT boards are electronic, and have sensors in them that allow them to detect the board position and to be connected to computers and the internet, so that the moves can be recorded and the game can be relayed for live viewing on chess websites etc. Using this type of board, the result of the game can be indicated by placing the kings in certain configurations in the center of the board at the end of the game. Placing both kings on black squares indicates black won, placing both kings on white squares indicates white won, and placing one king on white and one on black indicates a draw. These configurations were chosen to indicate a result, because by placing the kings directly next to each other in the center of the board an illegal chess position is reached (one king cannot attack another since doing so would place it in check), so there can be no ambiguity that a result and not a real chess position is being indicated. In this game, at the end, the arbiter places both kings on black, so therefore black (Carlsen) won.
For those who did'nt notice Carlsen won, if you pay atention at the end Grischuk plays when he saw the clock, then Carsen realised the flag on Grischuk clock... the expresion in Carlsen face was a release because Grischuk was better so he said: "sorry" at the end!
@MagicianPugh Very good, so what would be the best openings in your opinion for both black and white? ie.what openings would you find strongest when playing with white and black??
Carlsen has no need to concern about blitz tournament result, because he is now an official world champion. Quick rating and blitz rating are nothing. The world top chess scene only cares about regular rating and ranking.
That is actually not true. Carlsen won, or more precisely, he didnt lose on time. Remember that every move brings you back 2 more seconds. Now look at his last 2 moves. He has at least 4 extra seconds. Grischuk resigned just because of the threat of g7, losing the tower
@crazysaps No problem, The same pawn move from black is called a Sicilian defence! known as one of the best defences from black! Study the English, and you will get a good idea of what to do when on black! Very good on both sides and my Favourite opening from white!
I think this channel should at least put an overlay or annotation showing who won at the end of the match because sometimes its not clear who resigned or did they draw or something. It is better than putting it on the description which could be spoilers.
People who are smart enough to keep their money safe. In crowded places like that you could very easily be pickpocketed if your wallet is in your back pocket. It is extremely difficult, however, to pick someone's wallet out of their side pocket without the person realizing what's going on.
After watching this game, I wondered: Is it required in blitz and maybe standard games, that you must hit the clock with the same hand you moved the piece with? Both Carlsen and Grishschuk don't use their left hands at all. I did not think this was the rule. but perhaps times have changed.
That's been a rule for as long as I've been playing tournament chess. Article 6.2.b of the Fide rules handbook says: "A player must press his clock with the same hand with which he made his move. It is forbidden for a player to keep his finger on the clock or to ‘hover’ over it."
@crazysaps Its a matter of experience, playing what you know best and what your opponant might not know as well as you do! But i guess if this is a start, on white play pawn to e4 first and work around that! On black, look up "Kings Indian" against a white D4 opening and look up the "French defence" against a white E4
No its not, I got the answer already. Its a radio frequency reader that tracks the moves and transmits them to a screen/central computer. Each piece has a micro-chip.
We didn't see a clock, but obviously they run out of time, cause Magnus pointed at the clock. but who lost, I carefully examined the waiting periods between the moves of both players, and had the impression that Grischuk had one longer period of thinking than Carlsen, so I think Magnus won on time
It's convention to place both Kings in the center when it's a Draw, and the comment above from infiniteunvierse is correct. I like this way of handling things, it shows class and respect for the opponent and the game when you engage in such things, though depending on the location of your respective Game, even a handshake can garner looks leading they who extended their hand with the feeling that the other individual thinks your behavior may perhaps indicate arrogance and/or superciliousness.
No, Grishuk ran out of time. Carlsen didn't realize it, but there isn't any point in continuing to play when you've already flagged, so Grishuk pointed it out to him.

thank you
i just guessed because of the face of the guy playing with white after the game :)
Thanks
Great man! Thats very usefull thank you very much
infiniteuniverse thanks a lot
Grischuk is such a character. The way he ALWAYS looks at the clock continuously towards the last 30 second rundown of every game is hilarious.
Grischuk : "I don't know how he does it."
Carlsen : "I don't know how I do it."
Too fast for me. I would need a calendar, not a chess clock.
o bien un reloj de arena jajajajaja
Magnus' sigh of relief at the end was priceless.

Wow!Thank You for this information! I would have not expected that there is such a system.Great!
Magnus's end game is devastating
The game was 8 years ago.
Now his game is tremendously improved
CARLSEN I LOVE YOU
This is the type of video you want to see. A fixed camera that show the players and pieces really well.
FYI if anyone is ever confused who won a game look at where they place the kings at the end. They place them on the color of the winning side.
Great player

your can find the game here www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1599832 where the last moves are included in the comments below....
Amazing endgame. Carlsen's face says it all.

Where's the digital board that pops-up over top?
@MagicianPugh Very good, so what would be the best openings in your opinion for both black and white? ie.what openings would you find strongest when playing with white and black??
Grischuck = blitz beast
Carlsen has no need to concern about blitz tournament result, because he is now an official world champion. Quick rating and blitz rating are nothing. The world top chess scene only cares about regular rating and ranking.
the looks of the spectators
grischuk süper man
wow what a great plan by grischuk with h4 and g4 after that carlsen had big problems
Grischuk won just because Carlsen had no time. Grischuck's face is like "clock saved me, I'm lost" hahahaha
Carlsen won..
Carlsen won just because Grischuk had no time. Carlsens face is like "clock saved me, thank god"
Grischuk won by time magnus is won the game
very good
@MagicianPugh Thanks a mil mate, trying to learn some openings for some chess comps between colleges, thanks :)
What happens if one of the players doesn't have enough time to play ?
they lose
I do. Cannot be picked and you dont have to sit on it. I've never understood the back pocket thing.
impresionante
Good job on keeping camera steady, no zoom in & out. but the angle could be better perhaps from a corner, better depth of view.
cant see the clock :(.
Oh well thanks for filming and uploading to youtube!
4:57 a little distraction there.
The old enemy of Carlsen....
Time.

Carlsen could very well be the greatest rook-pawn endgame player of all time.
am big fan a magnus

GOOD QUESTION!
huge brains do not mean that someone is more intelligent
Whats the name of the opening grischuk performs as white, with the bishop on white and then the castle kingside, whats the name of that opening??
I watch these games but mostly cant figure out the one who wins..
People who are smart enough to keep their money safe. In crowded places like that you could very easily be pickpocketed if your wallet is in your back pocket. It is extremely difficult, however, to pick someone's wallet out of their side pocket without the person realizing what's going on.

this is a great illustration of how we lose game. DO not bring coke beside you!
@crazysaps Its a matter of experience, playing what you know best and what your opponant might not know as well as you do!

On black, look up "Kings Indian" against a white D4 opening
and look up the "French defence" against a white E4
did anyone notice that when the vid goes from black and white to color it seems as if both players are stunned because of the light?
No its not, I got the answer already. Its a radio frequency reader that tracks the moves and transmits them to a screen/central computer. Each piece has a micro-chip.
no Grischuk resigned
did carlsen said sorry at 9:18?
whats the external device attached to the clock?
We didn't see a clock, but obviously they run out of time, cause Magnus pointed at the clock. but who lost, I carefully examined the waiting periods between the moves of both players, and had the impression that Grischuk had one longer period of thinking than Carlsen, so I think Magnus won on time
Well since Magnus pointed at the clock, he was indicating to his opponent he was down. Simple deduction really.
Why did the official put the king in the middle at the end ?
After the game, end why are the Kings kept in the middle black squares? Is it a convention or something? I've noticed this in quite a lot of games...
Shomik Biswas Checkout my comment, it explains how it works…the short answer is black square means black won...
It's convention to place both Kings in the center when it's a Draw, and the comment above from infiniteunvierse is correct. 4 a.m. and I watching this video. I am a freak.
yes :) thats what I ment.. I believe ,,,lol
No, Grishuk ran out of time. Carlsen didn't realize it, but there isn't any point in continuing to play when you've already flagged, so Grishuk pointed it out to him.
me too :(
was it a draw?
you are sweet chessvibes
Time out!
@gabadiel They had color all the time
Calsen win or loss ?
For all of you who don't know the result: GRISCHUK LOST ON TIME. Look at how the judge places the kings on the center black pieces.
ragazzi c è qualcuno che puo rispondere???
But why that carlsen???
Least Magnus wore a shirt. Sasha looks like he just got out of bed.
Carlsen won or lost?
@6irvin6 he won on time, grischuk points at the clock
Alexander Grischuk ( Rússia ) Vs.Magnus Carlssen (Noruega).
Quien gano
white comes out in a better position at the end, a rook sac helps white more too
in the end both kings were put on black squares which means carlsen won..
@1Deejay7 To mark out black as the winner
