- The story takes place in Spain during the occupation of Napoleon's army. The heroine is the young Gypsy girl, Paquita. She is really of noble birth. She was abducted by Gypsies when she was an infant. She saves the life of a young French officer, Lucien d'Hervilly. He is the target of a Spanish governor who desires to have him killed by Iñigo, a Gypsy chief. Paquita discovers that she is of noble birth. She is in fact the cousin of Lucien. She and Lucien marry.

the book the ballet is based on as a child. I have one question about the Polish dance in the final act,
is there a connection to Poland? That is where I read a book, I believe it was of Cervantes.
It's a Mazurka. Originally a Polish dance, it became (according to Wikipedia) very, very popular around Europe, also in countries such like France (then also probably Spain?), but also in other countries besides Europe, such like even Mexico!
@@felicity1877 I am very well aware of it's origin. I lived in Poland 25 years :) Just couldn't figure out the connection of it to the French story at the time. Now I know why it's there . Now I know why it's there, Galicia was a part of western Poland and today's Ukraine that belonged to Poland at the time ( I was born there). I didn't know before that the story was taking place there...
@@BytomGirl Oh, okay. I didn’t know that the ballet was based on a book! 🤔😲 the ballet version is set in Spain under French influence and so I thought always it would be simply one fashionable dance of this period..,so, do you know which book this is?
@@felicity1877 The book was written by Cervantez (he also wrote Don Quixote) and it was called A Little Gypsy Girl

I believe this is Paris Opéra Ballet, and the ballet is choreographed by Pierre Lacotte. They performed this at Bolchoï in Moscow; there is even a documentary about it!
It says it was performed at the Palais Garnier at the beginning (also looks like the Palais Garnier)
I know; this doesn't look like Bolchoï anyway! Also, the dancers are different than the ones seen in the documentary.

At Bolshoi was performed only Grand Pass with Bolshoi premiere dancer Nikolai Tsiskairdze and
