This is indefensible from Southgate. Maguire,Phillips and Henderson all being there while Sterling,Ward-Prowse and Watkins are sat at home is a disgrace
Southgate has always had his favourites. The talent that England have had for a few years now Another manager would have won something by now
Not only does Southgate have his favourites but it sends a message to players who dream of playing for England, that regardless of your form or the amount of games you are involved in, I will always select my favourites ahead of you!
That message is the opposite to why a manager selects players for a team.
Sterling and Warkins are forwards, ward-prowse an 8. Maguire is a centre back, given Stones and Mings are injured, White is not in his good books for his actions at the world cup and he never picked Smalling then the only other guy who could rival Maguire was Adam Webster of Brighton. Philips is the backup CDM(a role JWP can't play) and Henderson is England's most experienced Midfielder .
I agree in regards to Watkins. I think it's to early to be outraged by prowse, he's looked good in his first 2 games for Westham but was nothing special for South Hampton last year, they were a relegated side.
Never rated sterling myself. Very fast sure but s*** at passing and way to greedy. Scores goals sure but for every goal he scores he could've set 3 up if he'd just passed.

The problem with the whole experience argument is if you don't pick other players, they won't end up gaining any experience and when your experienced players are gone, you'll end up with a bunch of inexperienced players who, if they had been given the game time, would actually be experienced by that point. It's just another reasons why Southgate is absolutely clueless. As a Gooner, I'm absolutely happy for Eddie and I hope he plays well but it's baffling what more Watkins has to do, same with White, Ward-Prowse, Tomori and a bunch of others
Yeah but also there's a fine line between experience and inexperienced. Most of these players are used to playing at the highest level in the most difficult leagues.
Even if they lack international experience. They're still experienced enough to play and cope with it.
Watkins finishing is dreadful at the moment, so what he has to do as a striker is score, so totally get why he's not been selected

Tomori and Coliwell are probably our best centre backs at the moment.
Tomori has had 2 good seasons in Italy, coliwell is coming off the back of that u21 success and is looking really good for Chelsea and I bet he starts Maguire and who ever the next weakest option is. I'm surprised he hasn't taken coady. It seems the championship is his limit.

Southgate likes to integrate players into the camp before chucking them into games, letting them get used to everything. Coliwell imo is promising but needs alot more prem experience before making the step up to England, Tomori flatters to decieve and I have no idea what people see in guyhe honestly.
Maguire isn't just England's best CB, he's one of England's best performer's full stop and has been for several years now.
If I was Southgate I'd be playing Maguire against Ukraine and then rotate in the friendly against Scotland.

Villa Fan, The omission that baffles me the most is that of Raheem Sterling who`s looked electric for Chelsea this season so far.
It’s cos he’s in form and Gareth doesn’t like that
Don't rate sterling myself, never have. He's fast and has a half decent shot on him but his passing is beyond aweful and he's way to greedy.
For every one goal he scores he could've had 3 assists if he'd have passed instead of shooting the previous times.

If Gareth really thinks he has picked the best players for his squad then its time for him to go. His job is to get us winning trophies and move the squad forward, He seems to have forgotten that.

You have a short memory, we were well in that game and in periods were taking the game to the defending champions.
In the end they did just enough to beat us but we gave them a battle that's for sure.

More shots on target, more possession, more big chances created, we hit the woodwork, essentially every conceivable metric apart from the final score which is football unfortunately 🤷

The squad choices are directly affected by Southgate's tactics. He tries to play like City one game then Liverpool the next. International football is about getting a system that gets as many of your best players on the pitch and out scoring the other team. You dont have the time or guarantee of players to try to play club systems.
Thats why England needs a manager that just picks the best players available, plays the system that gets the best players on the pitch and attacks.

The biggest problem in Trent's career has been Gareth Southgate getting in his head. Joe Gomez got an almost career ending injury in a Southgate training session, then on his return got most of the flak for allowing Sterling to commit GBH on him. I hope he leaves Quansah alone but the U18 England side he captained won the Euros, after he scored the winner in the semi-final and provided the winning assist in the final itself. Hopefully Southgate will have gone if he improves, as we Academy watchers expect, to the point where he draws international notice.
Worryingly though, there is already no club team on the planet in which he would not be higher up the order than Maguire.

The thing that concerns me (and should concern SafeGate) is that opponents noticably target Maguire. You can see them sticking their lightening quick and most skillful/technical/clever players to get into Maguire's airspace. You can pull him out of position, press him (to force errors), amd get in behind him. Even the opposing nation fans take the piss out of Maguire with memes on social media, and piss taking us (and him) during the games.
Southgate picks Maguire because he suits his defensive style of play. You cant play any other way with Maguire in the team. He is ususlly protected by at least three players around him.

I have been saying this for what feels years now...the only time Southgate said we pick players on form was literally the first year he was in charge when no one cared, no one gave England a hope and the guy said the right things to get the fans on side....then he went back to what every other manager has done and picked favourites who don't even play!!!
Phillips and Maguire getting game time for England for the past year to year and a half is a disgrace to the setup!!! Not picking Dunk and Tomori for like 3 seasons was bad enough as well!!! Now he leaves out JWP yet again....how many tournament squads did he drop the guy from?? Also no Watkins and I think Solly March should have had a shout too!!
