I've played through three of those, and I totally agree. The Howard side mission from Spider-Man 2 had me curious about his phrasing, but if I recall correctly at some point during the mission Spider-Man tries to call him and gets no response, thinking nothing of it. By the time you find the new home for the pigeons there's been enough context clues to make me go "oh...oh no" about returning. And for God of War, it's very fitting to have a clear lesson that actions have consequences and sometimes there is no making it right again. A lesson Kratos had learned and taken to heart at that point.

In the Fog From Horizon Forbidden West, That side mission that has broken and stayed with me. Basically, you're sent into the woods to find this old man named Garokkan by his daughter. When you find Garokkan, he mentions that there will be an attack and asks for help to stop it. After following him around, you start to notice that things Garokkan is saying aren't adding up; finally, after some fights, you end up at the Memorial site. Turns out Garokkan is suffering from what is mostly likely Dementia and has been reliving an ambush that happened years ago that left him the only survivor of his squad.

My favorite side quest in the entire game. Reminds me of the Brom side quest from Zero Dawn. The one where the guy tries to make people think he's dead because the voices in his head might tell him to hurt his sister Olara, like how they told him to smash the asshole who was bullying him in the face with a rock.
Side note: It's not Garokkan. It's GarokkaH. With an H.

Honourable mention: in Mass Effect, if you choose Colony Kid as your origin, there's a sidequest with a woman suffering severe PTSD from years of brutal slavery. You have to try to talk her down from killing herself (she grieves her "beloved master", she's been so traumatised by years of abuse), and it's all just awful and heartbreaking, especially when you consider that that could have been your character

I feel like Borderlands did look into the more real aspects of life throughout it, though almost always in a joking way. Loneliness, insanity, living on a post apocalyptic planet, grief etc. I always think about Claptrap's birthday in Borderlands 2. For all his faults, that was heart-wrenching

    • @dorabrooks76
      @dorabrooks76 Před měsícem +2

Yeah, I think a lot of people can relate to Claptrap. I know someone who had a birthday party where about 6 people said they'd come, and no one showed up. None of them called or texted. Nothing. Just no-showed. Horrible. She was a really good friend. I was working that day, unfortunately, otherwise I'd have been there. I can't imagine how she felt. I was pissed. She wasn't even an outsider or outcast, and I know it's worse for them (folk like me).
I think that's why so many people love Claptrap even though he's (intentionally) annoying- he's relatable.

I about died laughing at the Red Dead entry with you and Psy 😂. And I saw it in the intro with the mission in Final Fantasy XVI with the girl who treats her slaves as replaceable playthings and makes them use their powers until they die of exhaustion. I think that one brought a tear to my eye but I did the mission right after the one about the boy and the wolf.
You're told by a boy's father that his son is in danger of being eaten by some wolves, but the father oddly doesn't sound too distressed. You get to the location and slay the wolves, all for the little boy to scream that you weren't supposed to kill them, they were supposed to kill YOU. You then see the bodies of the other Branded who have also listened to the father...and were killed by the wolves. The little boy, no older than ten, gets sick enjoyment out of watching the wolves murder people and the father encourages it.
The mission ends with Clive being absolutely disgusted but doesn't hurt them. Instead, they get a new shipmemt of wolves, brought in by a Bearer who...fails to mention to the father and son that these ones are by no means tamable. You hear what happens rather than see it, but if you go to the location of the screams, you see the blood left behind.
I think this one hit me hard as a black person, knowing the idea of this mission didn't just come from nowhere. It was done to slaves, has been done to others as well and is abhorrent. The ones killed in the mission were nameless NPC's, but I still got teary-eyed. The game warns that the closer to the capitol you get, the worse the classism and bigotry gets and they weren't lying. It almost makes me wonder how the heck Dion didn't become like that, but maybe as a gay man who could turn into a dragon, he was already well aware of how different from others he was and could empathize. Him not being a pompous asshole when he had every right to be is what made him one of my favorite characters.

There's a long, non-voiced world quest in Genshin Impact that follows a girl and her father through the deserts of Sumeru. The quest is called The Golden Slumber. At first it seems like a very short quest to find out what's going on with a commission. Eventually, you learn that Jebrael (the father) abandoned his old tribe because of learning that their tribe's leader, Babel, was planning on committing genocide in order to attain supposedly divine power. There's a lot of twists and turns the story takes. I won't post what happened to you just in case, but it is the best side story so far in the entirety of Genshin.

When she's losing her faculties and tells you the story of her affair with Jin's dad, then starts mistaking Jin for his dad (who she was in love with), I start the waterworks and don't stop until she's passed. It reminded me of my grandmother in her last years suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's, and how she seemed to regress and once mistook me for her long-dead husband. Hell, I'm crying right now just thinking about it.

I agree, RDR2 has some S tier side missions. My favorites revolved around the Downes family. It was probably the first time I've had a game really make me think about the consequences of the MC's actions, and on replays had me wishing I didn't have to beat up Thomas, but that's a part of the story that had to happen.

When I started this video, I was hoping to see Tales of Syphonia. The side quest where you find out that the siblings' mother did not abandon them because she didn't love them, but because she did not want them to grow up as slaves. She was so heartbroken that she went round the bend and now thinks the dolls she has are her children. The worst part is you don't get any closure because after you find out why she abandoned them you go back, and she's gone.

    Xenoblade Chronicles, the named-Telethia-killing missions.
So. Telethia. You first see one in the confrontation after the Ether Mine, where it helps you out of a scrape. The next time you see one, a cute girl (who turns out to be an Emperor's daughter) is fighting it. While gathering ether crystals to revive her, you find you have to fight two more, and are given an additional tool to do so. Cut to several chapters later, when you find that Telethia...
...are pure (or close enough to it) High Entia caught in a field of high concentrations of ether. Many are named, but others... depending on how much you hoovered up the sidequests, you may have even helped some of them. And now you have to put them down to complete these sidequests, such as the one with a brother and sister who've had to escape and landed in Frontier Village. The brother wants you to retrieve something from Alcamoth. When you get it, however, you're confronted by a Telethia with the same name as their father, the same father you may have helped find his children. And now, you can't even give the item to his son unless you kill him.

Honorable mention for the quest in Pillars of Eternity where you have to find the body of the child in the water that passed protecting prostitutes while his dad was getting drunk. Followed by having to inform both parents of what you found.
