  • Today will will be looking for moose in Alaska. We will be using an Argo to travel through some serious mud and go places that a normal ATV would really struggle to navigate. You will find that a tracked Argo makes mud holes and tiger traps look easy. Additionally, we will tour an old hunting camp and have an easy trailside lunch. Come along for a fun backcountry adventure.

    Pretty country, nice machine, tough trails, I am glad you have an Argo with Adair tracks. People just don't understand what these machines will do until they see it for themselves. In my area it's swamps, take two tracked Argos because if you break down your not walking out.

      Agreed. One Argo shouldn’t go anywhere that you can’t get with a four wheeler, but two Argos are invincible. I have some plans this spring to get in the real stuff.😁

      @@RaisedinAlaska I believe it was fun. I am looking such videos with Argo in heavy mud, because I am considering buying one as well. I am from Latvia countryside, bought big 2ha property nearby huuuge and massive woods, small river flows trough it (originally 1m wide, but beavers made it like 300 m wide in all of its length creating like 20 damms, it was my hobby to go out, seek them and destroy damms, for some time I hired some hunters, but they are now busy elswhere. In woods are many roads what to discover, only they are across the river, down the river are old and abandoned Turf mines who are now like a swamp. I look videos Argo owners driving in swamp, river and deep mud and I think this vehicle would be ideal for navigating up and down the river, exploring nature. But moustly I think about all the wood mass in damms what I throw in bushes and it is wasted, with Argo I believe I would be able to drive it out and pile up along road, mulching truck would pay me like 2000$ for all what I have pulled out and thrown away, better now to start bringing it home. In worst case I will have plenty of free energy firewood. :) How You think as Argo owner would an Argo fit good for my intended purpose? I gather some beatiful beaver damm logs who I intend to transform into a huge chair.

      @@WILDBEES_LATVIA I hate to do this to you, because I don’t like when people answer my questions with, “watch my other videos”, but I’ll share four videos that have a couple different perspectives. I’m not trying to drive up my views but it might be worth fast forwarding through the videos to find places were we are using the Argo. In the first two videos, we have tracks on the Argo and we go through some pretty good mud and a couple small river crossings. We do tear one track loose from the hinges, and have to deal with that, but that’s pretty rare. In the second two videos, we’re out with the same Argo, but it has no tracks on it. Contrasting the two trips it’s easy to see that an Argo is a totally different machine with tracks on it. Tracks make it like a mini bulldozer that will go anywhere. That said, the tracks that I have will swim through water and real thin mud, but not all tracks swim. Further, even with tracks that will swim, an Argo will not go against the current or upstream. With what you are describing an Argo with tracks would be a pretty rockin machine. I hope that helps, if you have other questions I’m happy to answer.

    Love your videos! Could I bother you on some thoughts on the Argo? I’m sure you get this question a lot but I’ll ask any way. I thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

      I do a general service every time I take mine out: grease all fittings and check chains. I do a full service at the end of each season. I have 130 hours on mine and just lost a bearing. I removed all 16 bearings and found one that wasn’t perfect and the rest were fine (I have a video on that process). I have broken chains, but that’s not a huge deal to fix in the field. The major thing I find about the Argo is that they don’t go anywhere very fast, 5 to 10 miles an hour, but they’ll go anywhere. If I were to get a new one there’s a few modifications I would make before I ever took mine out in the field and I have some videos about those if you scroll through my ATV Argo maintenance videos. None of the mods are big, but each will save you later. I’m always happy to answer questions.

    Got a 2013 750 Hdi with 18" tracks this year. New to argos. Should I be in low gear on those mud trails all the time or just when towing trailer with camping gear? Would the argo run hot in high gear?

      When I bought mine new from the dealership, I talked to them about high versus low. What I was told is the only time you would use low gear is if you’re going up something super steep if you’re stuck trying to get out. I was told that cruising in low gear would overheat the transmission.

      It seems like there’s an endless amount of swamps in Alaska, but generally you have to find a trail to get past the thick trees, and what not. That said this fall I’ll probably go in 20 miles or deeper and I’m lucky I want to see many people.

    Is it hard to judge a legal Moose in Alaska? I'm moving up there hopefuly this year or next year and im big into the Hunting and Fishing and just being outdoors. We dont have any antler restrictions on Moose here. Is there a lot of places where you can acess decent hunting with a four wheeler or do you really need a plane?

    • @RaisedinAlaska
      @RaisedinAlaska  Před 11 měsíci

      In judging moose: Spike fork is easy. Some more remote areas are any bull so that is easy. Most areas are 50” or more: this can be difficult. I tell my hunting partners there is no such thing as a 50” bull, but there are 54” bulls. This means do not shoot a bull that you think might be 50” because it will be 49 1/2. Then in the 50”+ units they are generally either 3 or 4 brow tines on at least one side. This just requires a little time to make a determination. There is a lot of land in AK so you can access areas by 4 wheeler. There are also transporter flight services that will drop you in areas.

      It depends where you plan on going. A few years ago, I hunted with a guy who did not have tracks on his Argo. To get to our hunting location we would go through countless mud holes. Basically we went through enough mud that no other vehicles could make it. I towed him on enough occasions the first year, that he bought tracks for the second year. Basically, they give you floatation in the mud so you do not get high centered. After a couple trips, you will know if you need them for where you plan to go.

    • @nvgun40
      @nvgun40 Před 3 lety +1

      @@aarondonham6041 I too live in Alaska. Congrats on the new Argo. You will love it. I concur with Raised in Alaska regarding tracks. It depends on where you are going. There is guy in Wasilla that makes really good tracks much like the Adairs (unfortunately I do not know his name or contact info). Myself, I run the 18" heavy duty Argo rubber tracks. I ran them on my previous Argo and I run them on my new 2021 950.
      As was said, it really depends on where you are going and when...
      Some things to keep in mind and consider when running tracks. Side hilling.... Not good, especially if you have a lot of weight in the Argo. three things can happen. 1) excessive wear on the tire sidewalls from the track guides, 2) potential breakage of track guides, 3) it can cause the tracks to rub against the tub (body). If you have to sidehill long distances, use a zig zagging pattern to reduce the potential for whats mentioned.
      Ruts: ruts can cause the tracks to flex a lot putting pressure from the track guides on both inner and outer sidewalls of the tires and can lead to breaking track guides. Try to minimize riding in ruts by offsetting to one side or the other, or again, zig zag back and forth across them.
      Hard rocky terrain: bad for tracks. Especially sharp rocks.
      Finally, speed. Especially with the Aurora 950s. I know mine can reach 25MPH+ with the tracks on, on hard pack surfaces. Don't do it. high speed with tracks can cause chain wind up and damage the chains or sprockets.
      Do as much planning and scouting whenever possible so that you have an idea on what the primary (most) of the terrain you will be travelling through is.
      We recreate a lot with our Argo. Often times during the summer months I will remove the tracks (we like to get into mountain lakes and boat around fishing), and not put them back on till hunting season and throughout the winter.
      Tracks are spendy, but they are worth every penny. Good luck to you.
