RVK Newscast #92: The New Fissure And Its Long Lava Flow

  • Two new fiery cracks appeared in the earth on Monday, only 500 metres from Geldingadalsgos. The lava has now flowed to Merardalur, more than a kilometre away. But after we visited the area a third fissure also appeared.
    The area close to Grindavík is changing rapidly; for example, the lava around the original eruption is now well over ten metres high. All of these eruptions are connected to the same volcanic system, and scientists say that there could even be more.

  • @nonmihiseddeo4181
    @nonmihiseddeo4181 Před 3 lety +77

    Our geologists here in Montana USA are calling the area where these volcanoes are forming a "rift valley." They are predicting the continuation of the type of volcanism we are seeing now, going into the future.
    EDIT: Relative to the length of the lava falls, it's possible that Hawai'i with all its many volcanic eruptions has something to rival the falls in this video. Mt Etna is currently erupting. Its lava moves a lot slower, because it has a lot of silica in it. I don't know how far it is downhill to the sea, and no one has posted videos showing that (maybe it's too dangerous). Mt Pacaya in Equador is erupting, but there's no video of lava fall(s) there, either. If Mauna Loa goes, it's a shield volcano, basaltic lava like Meradalir and Geldingadalir, and that lava will flow with gravity following the path of least resistance to the sea, however far that is. These are interesting times, for sure!
    RE-EDIT: When basaltic lava cools, it forms a shell over itself of black glass. When the lava is flowing slowly and is subject to more cooling away from its vent/volcano, you can hear that glass shell breaking as the lava flows. It sounds like glass breaking.

      Etna when she puts out lava flows is faster then this due to the one mile drop right off the bat. Kilauea tends not to have lava falls through the fact that it's relatively flat but that said fissure 8 during the last eruption put out more quantity of lava in a day than the original cinder cone here could in a month. Her lava river was up to a half kilometer wide moving at up to 30 kilometers per hour.

  • @richard--s
    @richard--s Před 3 lety +2

    Wow, what a great insigt into the vulcano system there! Thank you very much!
    At 5:20 we can see the lava "waterfall" (no, the lavafall ;-) flowing out of the new volcano in the background on the left base of the volcano into the lava "river"... wow... and at 8:40 again...
    And at 6:36 you can see the place where the lava flow later split up into a second path which would be a bit more in the background, flowing around that last small hill before the final valley for now. So if someone was on that last hill, he would have had no chance to come out other than with a helicopter. Oh, you were standing there at that exact hill at 9:50, maybe you were just around the point where the lava flow split in two flows later that day ;-)
    And that's why the area is closed for the general public, because if there are hundreds of people watching the volcano and another fissure would open up behind them or another lava flow would flow down somewhere behind them, they would be trapped. And now try to evacuate hundreds of people from there. It is not possible to improvise a bridge over a lava flow, it would melt and burn. But with just a few people between two lava flows, it's still possible (but expensive) to evacuate them with a helicopter.
    Oh and 12:30 looks like there must be magma not very far below the old surface - or is it already a subsurface lava flow at that point... anyway, it's really fascinating!
    Thank you for showing this to us!

    13:41 An adult female horse is in fact also called 'mare' in English, so the name can very well be translated as Mare Valley. 🐴

    Anywhere else you’d need a hundred million dollars and a team of computer artists working night and day for months to produce something looking half as awesome.
    In Iceland, this is just another Wednesday.
    As for lava flows, Piton de la Fournaise on Réunion in the Indian Ocean is also producing very long, fast-moving lava flows, but I think your new flow is even bigger.
    Stay safe Valur and thank-you for sharing this extraordinary sight. Yes I’m still jealous you can get so close to the volcano.

    Valur, Thank you for such amazing reports. I found your channel right before the first eruption occurred and quickly subscribed. Please don’t put yourself at risk, though. I’ve been learning about Iceland through your channel and look forward to Your next report.

    That lava river is one of the neatest things I've ever seen. From the aerial shots that I've seen, the river looks quite narrow, I'm wondering just how deep it is and if it'll leave behind lava tubes after the fissure dries up.
