RVK Newscast #88: The Geldingadal’s Volcano May Last For Years

Sdílet

  • čas přidán 23. 03. 2021
  • The basalt lava from the volcano at Geldingadalir comes from a deeper place than any that has come from volcanoes in that area for over seven millenia. It arrives from around 20 kilometres deep, meaning-as one scientist said-that this is like having an express connection to the centre of the earth.
And this volcano could be here to stay. Scientists are saying now that it could be an effusive eruption, and historically some of those have gone on for decades. This-and more-in our latest newscast.

I'm in America. I had no idea that this week I would be watching a newsperson from Iceland and absolutely loving it. I don't know if newspeople in Iceland are all like this guy but I love his personality and the way he reports his news stories. Even his dog is adorable and entertaining. The camera man does such a great job. He always positions the camera in the most interesting angle possible and how he walks through this terrain and the wind while keeping the camera steady I'll never know but it's great to be watching something moving without getting motion sick.
Whether this volcano keeps going or stops, I will still be taking the time to watch this everyday just because it's so interesting to see how people are that live in a county so far away from me. I am so glad that forever reason that CZcams recommended a video of this team a few days ago. I am hooked!!! Great work all of you. I hope you get rich from your CZcams channel. You and your team deserve it!!!

Compared to the volcano and lava the people on the hill side all look to be so small! Lucky with the weather too, you missed the snow storms. As a DIS (Danish program) undergrad student heading for semester studies in Copenhagen, we landed at your capital's international airport, but only had 2 hours so could not venture far!🤣
Living in Hawaii years lateri I visit Kileaua Volcano on Big Island several times close up over 7 years, and once got to see it eventually pour lava into the ocean! Watched this volcanos activity from Mainland wishing could visit there back in 2018.
Now your volcano has renewed my great interest and if continues just where the lava goes once the valley is filled! I'll will be watching in wonder from Missouri, USA!

Id like to suggest that Icelandic National Parks set out the trail with red flags on metal stakes. If the clouds come down and heavy fog, as happened the first day, people may miss that path you have so nicely made, (Thank you!) so the little red flags fairly close together to see thru heavy fog would be helpful. I heard many people in Iceland get lost out in the wilderness when the clouds come down, or heavy blizzards and thick fog obscure the trails, so you should know best how close they need to be. This is so wonderful! We love your reporter and his dog Polly. He is such a great guy! Polly is a wonderful 1st National Pathfinder Doggie! I just worried about dog lungs and volcanic fumes. • @epincion
      @epincion Před 3 lety

In another video he said the reason for being asked to move was worry about gas, mostly carbon monoxide (CO) which is odourless and heavier than surrounding air so tends to fill in any depressions in the landscape. Humans, animals that went into a depression filled with CO would lose consciousness in a few seconds and soon die, so rescue officials want people to keep away from depressions such as the areas down next to the edge of the lave lake.

Nice reporting. There is a live stream of the volcano but the resolution is not great. Your video is beautiful. More raw footage of the volcano would be appreciated. Thanks Mark

Wow! Valur! I can't believe how much more lava filled up the valley since you first took us there! And even since just sundown last night! GOOOOOOLLLY! Please show us a piece of the lava and how sparkly it is! It always amazes me to see things of brightest color from a place of utter darkness! I hope the volcano will keep on erupting until I can come to see it!

It's incredible, right? Also, it does feel possible that the eruption could go on for months, even years. So you could be in luck Wendy.

@@TheReykjavikGrapevine ...you know, it would add weight to your journey from there, but a few rocks, busted up when home, and offered on your site for sale would more than pay for your expenses going out there....just sayin

Valur great commentary and have enjoyed all the jokes about how difficult your place names are to pronounce. I played with a translation app and have come up with a possible name: Þú getur borið það eldfjall. “ You Can Pronounce It Volcano”

Thank you so much for your calm and rational report. I'm so happy for you...your excitement is obvious. Glad too that you're mindful of the dangers and set an example. Enjoy your volcano...such history in the making! ps....I don't think your clothes will suit my sunny climate here in Australia, but when I finally get to Iceland, I'll know where to buy :)

That entire mound is liquid underneath. That is also know as a volcanic field because there are several fissures tied to one magma chambers.

We so look forward to your broadcasts! Maybe show a couple of drawings of the volcanic process on divergent plate boundaries -

Another good video, I enjoy your commentary and descriptions. . I think it looks like everyone in Iceland was there today. I saw someone was riding a bike there so they must have had a hard time going up the mountain. I understand they will put a road into the volcano so us old people can drive in. I see your subscriptions has increased a lot in the last 2 or 3 days, good for you . The world knows who you are now !!!

I hope it is still there in a couple of months so I can see this volcano maybe on a day trip to Iceland from the UK if I can get a really cheap Easyjet flight there and back from London Luton Airport. I heard it is not too far from Keflavik International Airport. Having to stay longer is very expensive in Iceland!!
We have been stuck at home far too long here in the UK due to the national COVID lockdown, I need break, it is just getting so boring here!!
