Love the permaculture, but I worry that this comes across as quite colonial in that it's always foreigners (mainly USA) who buy up land in CR and develop businesses. What happens to the locals? Just providing service jobs for them doesn't cut it . Imagine if you were a US citizen living in the USA and all your local permaculture farms and business were Chinese or Russian, and these same people offered you menial jobs their businesses.

Calendula...So concur...even for us very dry desert climate guys, green dreams are alive, as we attempt to incorporate many of our own Subtropicals, etc. My garden is eclectic but I have been a huge fan of Pete's video's since the very beginning...and they only get better :)

@ 10:10 in the Caribbean (especially the Southern Caribbean and Spanish Caribbean) we use it heavily. Known as Shado beni, Chadon Beni, culantro or bandania.. more pungent than cilantro and I don't think it affects people with the soapy taste thing as normal cilantro

I live in Hawaii and rather then buy coconut milk which costs money and is in a tin, I make my own. I gather the dry coconuts and cut them open with a machete. It really is a lot of work.

Really cool Pete, that is a really great place, this is another one I missed. I like the idea of people being able to make their own meds and doctor themselves if it's safe. How difficult is it to buy and own land down there if a person has the money? I don't have the money but you never know what can happen. I think Peru has a more moderate climate both on highs and lows but I don't know what a person can grow down there.
Punta Mona is amazing! Land ownership is great in CR and quite reasonable. Making a living is the hard part...

Hey guys me again. So I was thinking about the microphone issues, and how you interact with many different people on the farms, so a lav mic might not be the best.
My newest thinking is just going full out and mount you’re Rode in a boom stand and have one of your guys hold it independent of the camera. I know it’s a huge change, and fairly unpractical but that might be the best solution for capturing all aspects of sound.
Another option would be messing around with an Omni directional mic. A good one will be fairly expensive but that could help also. They do tend to have an odd whirling sound when you change the position though.
11219tt next trip I'm rolling with a second camera man for B-Roll of plants. My only job will be audio and speaking in front of the camera. I think this should solve most of my problems.
I used to run stand up comedy tours. for a vocal mic the Shure 58 was my favorite. Simple, affordable, reliable. But I have no idea how it handles outdoors - probably not great?
Urban aquaponics sm58 is incredibly directional. I believe the pattern is super cardioid, not the best for capturing moving people and wide areas. It also requires being close to the mic to avoid funny sounds.
Something with an Omni directional pattern might be better. The make some 4-in-1 cardioid mics that face in all different directions.
Thanks I appreciate the info. Explains why the 58 worked so well for me (cut out alternate noise) in pub and hall environments. Might have to get a new mic myself when I move into a bit of mycology/microbiology/permaculture teaching - that project will be both indoor and outdoor for most subjects. (mad scientist/comic/permie I can't wait hehe). Would two mics, one for each purpose, be better? Or do they have (affordable) mics that handle multiple environments?
Urban aquaponics yea the sm58 and 57 are great for stage mics because they prevent feedback from monitors and speakers. They’re also great for drums for close range isolation of toms and snares. They’re also super durable so strangers night after night at a comedy club can get drunk and drop them :)
Hmmm, for your question it depends on budget. You can buy clip-on lavaliere mics that plug into an iPhone for like $30 each.
You can also get the wireless battery pack lavaliere mics (same style as the iPhone ones) and get one per person, then feed the receiver boxes to the camera or a separate recording device and sync the audio during editing. There are wide price range and quality of sound with these types of mics. Don’t be fooled by the 6 pack of mics for $50 at guitar center. They sound horrible and also can drop a signal from time to time.
Another option is what’s called a shotgun mic. These are usually thin and long and very directional. These are the type used in movie sets with a big fluffy cover over them and a sound guy holding it in a boom arm. These are what you want if you have the budget for all of the accessories needed (including personnel) to operate.
But if it will be an interview type style with one person at a time then the lavaliere mic might be the best option. This allows for range of motion and freedom for the people to move around. The only downside is you have to hook it on them and some people don’t like their personal space invaded.
Another option is one mic mounted on the camera for capturing sound in the direction the camera faces (much like these videos) and the. A second mic either Omni directional capturing a wide range of sound or the shotgun mic and an operator for the overhead sound.

Punta Mona, like Finca la Vida on the Pacific side, seems to be basically just a tourist-oriented show place. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But, I prefer the real deal like...Peter Kring's Finca La Isla, which is an actual working permaculture farm.
Benjamin I would have to disagree. I haven’t been to Finca La Vida though. This was definitely a working Permaculture Farm and community, one of the few well working ones in the country to my knowledge. I just returned from a 2.0 tour and we revisited Punta Mona and Peter Kring for Durian 😉

OK, all those places that are permaculture havens are in places where you can plant a corn turd and it would grow, they have a 365 day growing season and never ending rain so it is no challenge to grow there but can you make a permaculture forest in Colorado or Maine?
Candide Thirtythree watch the back to Eden guy. His is set in a northern climate. There are many other perennials that he doesn't cover, but it is a good starting point.

search 'regreening the desert' or similar - i agree with you as i'm in South Africa which has more extreme weather conditions, currently enduring a severe drought and our forests, estuaries and fertile lands virtually stripped of life. Much trickier to regenerate than just plan in fertile, untainted soil.

If your going to tell the story.. tell the full story. These people came from jamaica.. they came originally to build the panama canal. These brave men and woman brought there knowledge and lets tell the true stories of who they were. Not just some random people. JAMAICAN people
Most indigenous populations suffered extreme hardship before learning sustainable practice. Deforestation, plague, famine, erosion and floods... common fare in history long before the industrial revolution. Stating permaculture is a natural extension of indigenous systems is, at best, questionable. I often meet people who take this misinformation and go on to state science (because big Ag science) is the problem. Ecology and environmental science is the basis of permaculture. Indigenous culture methods are adopted when they are sustainable, not by default. That said, indigenous gardening is our best 'library' of alternate methods and many traditional methods are not only viable, they're quite brilliant.
I can be a bit of a dick about accuracy. Truths require vigilance, or they can get distorted, then they're discarded.

rhadames asenjo I didn't find the bugs to be bad anywhere in Costa Rica. I think because it's suck a diverse and natural ecosystem. The mosquitos are way worse in Florida, I feel your pain.

TannerMiller that's like saying why hasn't everyone moved out of Florida? Sure climate change is real but no one knows where or when. At least Costa Rica has plenty of high ground and mountains, unlike Florida we are screwed.

I would love to see more of the plants and less of the guys talking, they are usually nice people, but too close to them, I would not be able to identify most of the plants they talk about because I can barely see the trees, or see them just briefly returning always to the person talking as the center focus in almost all the shots. Sometimes we can't even see what they are showing in their hands because the camera man focuses just on the man talking. Otherwise I love your videos, well of course except for the total focus on the guest talking and barely the plants :P .

I love your videos but have been disappointed by the lack of diversity in the humans you interact with. Virtually all of these costa rica vids are white men taking over land and all though this one seemed like it was done in a respectful way at the end of the day the video was all white people holding hands/I didn't see one native or indigenous person - feels a bit like colonization.
