I have one of these. Easy to work on. Yours looks in good condition probably just needs the motor to be cleaned up. Mainline ceased in 1984 when the parent company Palitoy decided to leave the model railway business they then evolved into Replica Railways and finally Bachmann. Thanks for showing. Regards Paul.

Looks great most old ones need a run in 1/2 hr each way.you may find it has a split chassis,CZcams Sams trains shows how to service them.
Good luck with your purchasing and enjoy the hobby

Be VERY wary of Mainline locomotives. They used a split chassis design which suffers from a whole host of problems.
The most common relates to the driving wheels. Each wheelset is made of two wheels pushed onto a plastic separator/axle, also incorporating the drive gear. These plastic axles (and the gears) are prone to splitting, especially if too much, or the wrong sort, of oil has been used. When the plastic splits, the wheels turn independently of the other side, the 'quartering' goes out, and the mechanism jams. Replacement axle sets are available for at least some of the models, but that's £8-£10 for parts and a full strip-down to fit. If you see a loco for sale where the coupling rod between the wheels is not parallel to the track, steer clear, unless it is very cheap (!) as that is a clear symptom of the problem
The second major issue is that the metal plating on the wheels can wear through where the electrical pickups touch. This is a problem, as the metal wheel under the plating is not conductive! (Crazy design!!) I think in this instance, replacement wheels are the only option, which means buying a second donor loco.
Replica and early Bachmann locos continued the same design, and suffer the same problem. Learning to recognise the different couplings fitted to early/later Bachmann locos will help you work out if the model chassis has been re-engineered, or if it is still a re-badged Mainline split chassis!
Looks like you were really lucky with this model. The Collet Goods is a very sweet-looking engine, and a nice size for a modest model railway layout.

Seems fine. Usually when they are like that they just want a bit of basic TLC. £25...Awesome. :)

I like Mainline locos - dead easy to service - no wires anywhere.

  • @stevenpeaketrainsandstuff3682

Very tidy for the price mate. I find the Mainline motors can be a bit sluggish, but they are dead easy to service. Enjoy your vids, it's interesting following the progress of those getting back into it.

Every second hand engine really needs a service. If you like that engine then the Mainline Dean Goods would be a good buy for you as well.

A lot of older mechanical things just need a bit of cleaning and some new grease and oil and they're good to go. Getting practically new things for cheap just by using 15 cents of oil and 15 minutes of cleaning is great.

For servicing videos on CZcams, I can strongly recommend OOBill: very clear and easy to follow.
He doesn't do very many Mainline models because of their inherent design flaws (see my other comment!)

Beautiful locomotive! Are these difficult to give them a clean up?

    • @ooheaven8491
      @ooheaven8491  Před 4 měsíci +1

These ones can be unfortunately, as the chassis is very delicate on this model.

@@ooheaven8491 I understand it's a metal split chassis? I had a Piko V100, it was often causing shorts, I gave up on it and sold it cheap as a non-runner.
