  • If you're anything like me, you've been watching every CZcams video possible while you wait for your bike to show up at the front door. Well, mine just arrived a couple days ago and there are 7 different things that surprised me, as they were different from any of the assembly videos I've seen, and up to as recent as videos from just the last batch of shipments. The new bikes have some new tweaks and I put this together so you can learn from my mistakes and save yourself any frustration on day one. Let's get you out riding quicker and safer so you can send it not only today, but tomorrow, too!
If you like this video, check out my next in this series dropping tomorrow with a complete detail of the pedal kit and whether or not it's worth it. I've got pros and cons and there are definitely at least a few of both. If you're on the fence, make sure to subscribe and check out the rest of the videos in this educational series of my journey from day one to...as far as this thing can take me and back!

Greetings from Central VA! Thanks for the vid, it helped me out when I got my Sur Ron yesterday. Left a like for my appreciation. Here is some info. from my experience.
Hopefully this helps others. I got the Sur Ron X Black Edition with belt drive installed from lunacycles.
I ordered in June 2020 and got it July 2020.
Before I start on the bike I would like to note that lunacycles gave me a face mask with the bike. I appreciate that gesture and it makes me feel like they care about their customers.
    1. Keys: Mine came attached with a zip tie on top of the fork rather than the side.
1A. Wires: My battery was unplugged and the fuze off as well.
    2. Handlebars: Great tip here, this helped me with my assembly.
    3. Front Axle Bolt: So my Sur Ron for the July Delivery had Killah Forks instead of what you have. Yours have small bolts around the axle you can tighten I believe. The Killah doesn't. I recommend using a marker (I have an oil based sharpie) to mark the axle bolt like they did with the other screws. This way you can easily visually check if the bolt is backing out and re-tighten. It might also help to use blue loctite. Also, my axle had arrows on it to show which direction to tighten. Both my spacers were also zip tied.
    4. Decals: Nothing to add here.
Thanks for showing off the Decals for people.
    5. Sport Mode: My bike also came factory unlocked. I suspected this when I examined the battery wires and there was electrical tape covering one of them. When I undid the tape I noticed the black wire sheath had a hole in it. When I tested the throttle sport mode was definitely more powerful. The limit for EP seems 30 and Sport seems 50mph. For those in the states the speedometer came in km/hr. To switch to mph make sure the bike is off. Hold the red button on the speedo and then turn on the bike. Hold the button for a few seconds and it should switch. One thing I can add is that since my bike has the belt drive, my speedo is wrong. The belt drive changes the gearing so it has 15% higher speed. I confirmed this with a gps app to measure my speed. Speedo said 30mph and the app said 36.
    6. Seat: Yeah the seat isn't super comfortable. Even a 15 min ride I found myself adjusting myself in the seat. And I have been riding a mountain bike for a month now.
    7. Installing Pedals: This didn't apply to me since I got a belt drive however there was great info especially about laws. I will talk about the belt drive as well. First of all, if you get the belt drive they don't give you the stock 48th sprocket or chain. The belt drive also appears to be a bit of a pain to install since it involves cutting the frame so I'm glad they offered that service. The belt drive will make your speedometer not accurate unless you get the super moto tires as well which was not an option at the time.
So now begins my random thoughts:
Laws: So I failed to lookup my local laws (same as yours apparently) and started kicking myself in the butt. However, I did take it on a nearby bike trail just to see what would happen... And nothing of note happened. I cruised 5-6 miles one way and then back for a round trip of 11-12 miles. This was at a speed of 14-16 mph. No one yelled at me, no one even said anything about the bike at all. I even got a few polite nods from people in the other lane as we passed by like I do when I ride my Sondors. I used to live in Northern VA and it seems like up there the folks are more... uptight? Anyways, I'm sure the story would change if I tried to ride it in the city. I'm curious to see if a cop will say anything. The odds of something happening is probably lowered if you ride in a slow and safe manner.
Regen Braking: So it definitely seems like the bike slows down noticeably even on EP mode. When I switch to sport the de-acceleration is much stronger, enough that I slide in the seat. Without bracing my arms on the handlebars and with the jeans I was wearing the brake strength pleasantly surprised me. It also seems like there is a brake curve. The de-acceleration felt constant until I got real slow, less than 10mph. This is probably enough braking for most applications. Basically anything short of "emergency" braking.
Suspension: So I never rode anything like a dirtbike/motorcycle before. Compared to my Sondors the suspension is way more responsive. It felt "floaty" to me and jumping up and down on the bike would drastically change the height. When I first rode it I though the tire went flat since my driveway has a big bump to the road. I heard hissing air when the front wheel impacted the road and the impact felt extremely soft. I quickly realized that was the suspension at work and was impressed. Again, this is coming from a guy who has no prior experience with such suspension.
Sound: Compared to my hub motor Sondors, the Sur Ron with it's mid drive motor is noticeably louder. All of the sound is around the motor. I don't hear a peep out of the rear sprocket area. At around 10-14mph it's a lot louder. Not sure why. It probably doesn't help that it has a belt and pulley system on the motor to change the gearing. That being said, it is still way quieter than a combustion motor of course. So not a complaint, just an observation.
Front Wheel Installation: To make this easier on yourself, use the cardboard piece that can with the bike to prop the front up. It's a box shaped piece that went over the rear wheel. The height is good enough for the front wheel to have ground clearance. Just put it underneath the motor area and balance it so the rear touches the ground.
Bike Height: So I'm 5'10" and the bike is definitely on the small side. I don't particularly mind it since the bike is seems well proportioned. This seems like a common complaint for people which is understandable.
Front Light: I kind of wish the front light could be turned off, unless I missed something. I aimed it down so I won't be beaming people in the eyes.
All in all I am extremely happy with this bike. It's such a joy to ride and I had to make sure I controlled my smile so a bug wouldn't fly in my mouth. My main criticism is that I wish the pedals addon was better designed so that it would be better for people trying to comply with laws in addition to an adjustable speedometer and speed limit.
Anyways, if you read this wall of text I hope this helps you.
    Take care and stay safe!

Re gen should maybe be hooked up to the braking system. So you hit either brake and re gen starts. If you want to coast then you should be able too which in effect would save battery power in itself as you wouldn’t have to get back on the throttle so soon.

I got mine about 2 weeks ago. I weigh 230 lbs. and only get about 22 miles out of the battery with very few hills. I have bought improved, wider foot pegs, a stabilizer bar in between the foot pegs, hand guards, and a rubber mud flap to protect the rear spring. Overall, the bike looks fantastic and has good power. The fit and finish is very good also. Thanks for this video. Cheers👍

The bars are long, because you didn't push your throttle and front brake in towards your triple clamp. Because on the throttle bolts too, if you over tighten they can crack the casing.

One Extra tip for the hard seat....other than finding another softer seat to install. You can buy shorts/underware that is built for bikers and has padding inside the cloth. Hope this helps give everyone another option in dealing with a seat that may not be the most comfortable. Be safe riding and have fun. As of the time/date of my text...my Sur Ron X is expected to arrive in Two more days. I’m very excited. 😊❤️🙏👍

Haha I was like, what are the chances of someone that owns a CZcams channel, having both a surron and a onewheel. You're definitely the first lol. As for myself, I had to do some research before finding out about both! Lol. Although, I have wanted an "ebike" in the past, there hasn't been one that really drew my attention until I found out about the surron, and as far as the Onewheel goes, it just looks very unique and fun to roll around on, or "float" on lol. I'm also surprised to see the global community around both the surron and the Onewheel! And that is definitely amazing in itself. Btw thanks for the tips on your videos, cause I definitely haven't seen too many videos out there going over the newer surron, just one other guy mentioned that theirs also came unlocked lol.

You want to be off the seat when hitting whoops and in the long straights. Watch some MX videos and Some Hare Scrambles you will see what I'm talking about. Congrats on the unexpected wheelie, at least you didn't Whiskey throttle it like my girlfriend and loop it then death gripping getting dragged down the field. lol

Their is an axle cap on both sides of the axle, you should remove them both and loctite them and replace them. The cap I left on from the factory, fell off on first ride, had to get 40 dollar axle from Luna just to replace the bolt. You can only get them out after tightening the clamp screws, or putting the axle in a vice.

Damaya you can get around 35-40 miles depending on how much SPORT mode and EP mode you use (more if mainly in EP). I just released an entire video based solely on "Is the Pedal Kit Worth it?" - check it out on my channel I think that'll really help you decide since the answer is different for each rider. Hope it helps! And no, the pedals are not for actual use, they're simply for compliance to make it fall in line with local e-bike laws. You're not pedaling this thing anywhere.

Did you already ride one? Would like to know which Mountainbike geometry it is like. Seems to be between downhill and trail bike. Which would be ok I think.. I will definitely test one.

    • @bigboytoysTTR
      @bigboytoysTTR  Před 4 lety +2

It's not like any mtb you've ever ridden. The best way to describe it is a 45 % downhill mtb crossed with a 45% sportbike and a 10% dash of dirtbike. You'll see what I mean as soon as you ride it...and can't stop smiling. 🙃

Its only a decent bike with the upgrades that'll take you into stupid money and even then its still got the bad geo my friend has one and for £4000 its an ok bike he's bought a controller and upgraded batt taking it to nearly £8000 with all the upgrades and my lmx p2.2 leaves it in the dirt i was expecting this to have a stronger motor than mine with less top speed than mine but faster acceleration it doesn't . im 50 /60lbs heavier than my friend and i leave him standing on his sur ron have a look at the lmx 161 or perhaps an older p2 model even the cake kalk its expensive but those 3 models I mentioned are faster more powerful and better geometry 4000 doesn't sound to bad against a lot of ebike manufacturers but you'll be better off in the long run getting a better lighter more comfortable and faster ebike electric motion make some really nice bikes also with the Astwoods / danaTM4 motor like the kalk uses those are all good machines

Thank you for being considerate enough to try & help the Sur Ron community. 1. Keys attached to bike: I think I'd notice that. 2. Wide handlebars w/cables tip: GREAT TIP, bad engineering. 3. Front axle bolt: I work on enough machines that i'd hope I'd figure the right/left bolt thing because bench grinders are already like that & I use one all the time. Good tip, tho'. "Tighten to spec." means what, exactly? That seems like useful information 4. Bike decals: ??? A whole bunch of "who cares." 5. EP/Sport: GOOD! They should always be like this. I hate manufacturers that assume they know best: give me the full capabilities. I always assume everything can kill me, many things have tried, but I don't want some self-impressed know-it-all to assume they know more than I do, because usually they don't. 6. Hard seat: Yeah, it always struck me as looking like it was hard. 7. Installing pedals: I had no plans to do something like this. When is it useful? I have a road bike & a mountain bike. This is an e-bike, & I figure if I'm out of juice I'm walking while pushing. Does it actually pedal reasonably? Don't they get in the way of brush and small animals? I have a tip for you: I put video playback speed on 2X because for me you talk slowly & provide information at the pace of someone that has all the time in the world. I don't. I still thank you for all the time & effort. Stay safe and keep the rubber side down.
