1988 - A skinny 15 year old kid used to ride his bicycle every evening to the DBKL field in Brickfields to watch his heroes train. The KL FA team put together by the Datuk Bandar at the time Tan Sri Elyas Omar. Rashid Hassan, Razip Ismail, Serbegeth Singh, Lim Teong Kim, Mat Zan Mat Aris, K Kannan, the unforgettable high-pitch screeching of Malek Awab down the wing. All legends of the game in their own right. But one footballer stood head and shoulders above the rest…Fandi Ahmad. Fandi used to drive to training in his Honda CRX. One of the most humble guys you could meet. Always took the time to say hi and a little word of encouragement to that scrawny little kid, despite already being a superstar in the region and one of the most famous strikers in Asia at the time. Every time KL played Selangor, that little kid went up to him the evening before the game and begged him to score. He didn’t disappoint! A hero to that little kid. 34 years ago. I was that little kid.

Most importantly, it has to be reiterated that Fandi Ahmad was offered a full professional contract after impressing during his trial with Ajax Amsterdam. At that time,Ajax had a certain lad by the name of Marco Van Basten in their ranks. Unfortunately, Fandi rejected the offer due to extreme homesickness.Nonetheless, the fact that this local kampong boy managed to leave an impression speaks volume of the man himself.

Those days were different. The paper chase hasnt begun. Only 1 English University and 1 Polythenic at that time. The fields at Farrer Park were open 24/7. Football culture was at home. That era has passed. How we camped overnight for tickets. How a fan died and many injured from stampede at the ticket booths. How we climbed the National Stadium walls because tickets were sold out. Football will never be the same again in Singapore. Our heartfelt thanks to Fandi and all his generation of footballers for giving us those fond memories. The Kallang Roar is now extinct, dead and buried.

Interesting fact about fandi in his early days, he indeed scored spectacular goals, surely he knows how to be calm and composed, he once played in defensive midfielder....now we know this living legend don't talk nonsense, 3 of his kids played simultaneously on national team. You don't see it regularly, world greatest football player also doesn't have that privilege....but Fandi did it to Singapore..
