Lillian Gish, who played Rachel Cooper, was one of the biggest silent screen stars in Hollywood. Her first film was in 1912 and her last was in 1987. If you ever want to check out silent films, take a look at Broken Blossoms (1919), Way Down East (1920), Orphans of the Storm (1920), The Scarlet Letter (1926), and The Wind (1928). The acting style in silent films was very different and she was really, really good at it.

    You watched it! Awesome.
You can see when you look back at these older movies there’s a range of stories, acting, visual, and dramatic styles.
This film is very theatrical with the acting and heightened dramatic lighting.
Robert Mitchum who played the Preacher is a Hollywood legend.
And this was his most iconic role.

“Pearl, if you don’t get your booty up these stairs!” 🤣 Thanks for a great reaction to this classic and very unique film.

  • @PeterEvansPeteTakesPictures

Thanks for reacting to this P.I.! It's one of my long time favourites. It's a film unlike any other, and you can tell that the Coen Brothers and Tim Burton probably watched it a lot. The director Charles Laughton was a big English character actor at the time, a big rotund fellow who also happened to be one of the greatest actors of all time. It's a crying shame that both audiences and critics didn't know what to make of this film. I love its mix of German expressonistic lighting and set-design, the parable / fable style of the story, the almost Simpsons like satire (the mob at the end is straight out of Springfield) and just the delliberately heightened emotion and drama of it all. Mitchum is superb, his sleepy eyes like two still-water pools of corruption. At other times he's like Wiley Coyote. Certain shots are legendary - the dead woman in the water. The children floating downstream. Finally I love the good woman who takes in John & Pearl, the light against Harry Powell's darkness. She's a little nuts, but in a good way and unlike the mob at the end doesn't get drunk on her religion, or warp it to support a selfish desire like Harry Powell. She also kicks ass. Best line? "I swear in all that time I'd just lay back and think about my canning." Damn, woman.

What these older movies may have lacked in "realism" they more than made up for with highly theatrical stories and incredibly creative, artistic visions.

P.I. great reaction. The 50s are a remarkable movie decade because of just how many great Hollywood and foreign films were made during those years, and how many that were super influential on future cinema. Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI, Hitchcock's VERTIGO, Bergman's THE SEVENTH SEAL, Ford's THE SEARCHERS, Fellini's LA STRADA and Kubrick's PATHS OF GLORY are a handful that pioneered narrative styles and technical things that have been copied over and over. And many of those films are still considered by directors, writers and critics as the best in their respective genres. We also saw a new style of acting emerge with stars like Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, Monty Clift and James Dean, coined "The Method" which reverberated through the 60s and 70s all the way up 'till today.

I watched this as a kid. I love retro movies. I'm the only person in my circle who does. I've never seen a CZcamsr react to one. Very cool! I remember being so scared for them near the end. My suggestion? And Then There Were None..good movie, fantastic book. Agatha Christie

There are so many incredible old movies, I hope you get a chance to see many of them. For a good, witty, time try The Thin Man 1934. I loved Night of the Hunter the first time I saw for many of the reasons you mentioned but also for the almost surreal portions of the cinematography and sets.

Robert Mitchum in this film and CAPE FEAR is the definition of The Bad Man. The very VERY bad man. If you have a chance, check out 1950's THE RACKET and HIS KIND OF WOMAN and see him flip that coin and play The Good Guy.

This is the only movie made by actor Charles Laughton because at the time it came out it was a financial flop . And he was sensitive to critics so he never directed another movie again.

Wonderful reaction to a truly excellent film. This has been one of my top five favorites since I’ve seen it! It actually chokes me up, the true wholesomeness of the story. Yes, the acting sometimes seems stilted, but in my opinion it’s just a form of expressionism. This type of movie isn’t trying to be completely real. But, man… the dialogue!!! So colorful and amazing. So glad you enjoyed it!

    @mckeldin1961 Před rokem +1

Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. I love this movie... there's really nothing else like it from the "golden age" of Hollywood. It actually used a lot of silent movie techniques (and the woman who opens and closes the movie is Lillian Gish who was a silent movie superstar). The artificial sets and heightened dialogue put a lot of people off when it was first released. This is the second reaction video I've seen featuring Night of the Hunter and I'm really excited that there are people today who appreciate it!

Robert Mitchum is great, and I love Charles Laughton especially in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) The Old Dark House (1932) Island of Lost Souls (1932) and of course the masterpiece, Witness for the Prosecution (1957)

This movie was so panned by critics when it first came out that its director, Charles Laughton, swore off directing any further movies. And I don't know if he lived to see it but I hope he did because, since that time, it's become iconinc and has been an influence to so many future directors it is hard to list them all.
You having now seen it, let me recommend one of the latest from modern times that was heavily influenced by it, "Promising young Woman". If you liked this movie, in spite of its flaws, I believe you will love, "Promising Young Woman". And you will also enjoy seeing not just one but two very obvious references to this movie in it.

There’s a lot of prejudice against black and white films because the average movie goer today has the attention span of a goldfish. Most of them have little to no appreciation for good acting, good dialogue, and good story telling and aren’t satisfied unless they’re a bunch of explosions, gore, swearing, toilet humor, and tits.
