Metal thieves target Los Angeles cemetery

- Nearly two dozen headstones have been damaged or stolen by vandals who struck a cemetery in Compton recently.
Video taken Friday by Aisha Woods and shared with KTLA shows empty spaces and rubble where the headstones, some made with copper or bronze, were once placed at Woodlawn Celestial Gardens cemetery on West Greenleaf Boulevard. Woods estimates roughly 23 headstones were taken, although the exact number is not yet known.

This is honestly one of the most disgusting stories I've seen in a while. My dad is buried in Los Angeles, to think of his grave being disturbed (or anyones for that matter) is beyond sick.

I am an avid hiker, one that has visited a multitude of locations, including ghost towns that sometimes have old (or even abandoned) cemeteries in them. When I walk through these locations, I look at the gravestones, and think about what this person may have been like in life, and the history that they lived. I recognize that the people resting there were once like me, a living breathing person, with people that care about her, making her mark on the world. I always felt a sense of respect for these folks that contributed so much to the history of my region. These abandoned mining towns I often visit were once a major part of the lifestyle here, and helped form what life is like today.
It is almost incomprehensible to me that people could show such blatent disrespect and disdain for the people of the past. To destroy these memorials to lives that are no less important than ours our. To destroy monuments that have been there for decades or centures honoring those that came before us, all for a few bucks. My mind just cannot comprehend doing this.

Meanwhile in Texas we had a law passed several years ago that required anyone selling metal plaques related to graves to provide two forms of ID and one of them must have your picture. But, in California they protect their thieves by NOT passing such a law!

THEY DO require ID and often fingerprints at California recycling centers for selling most anything. Where did you get your information?

Anything over 100 dollars a recycling center will ask for a form of identification. I dont see thieves getting away with it.

The cemetery is in Compton so...
We had a bronze memorial stolen from the Phoenix Library for our friend who died. We had a tree planted with a plaque memorializing our good friend who was a librarian and loved books. These people would steal the last dime their Mother had. They only care about themselves. People who melt memorials down need to be prosecuted and have mandatory jail time.
Ashamed to be Californian with all these crimes.

My parents have a granite headstone but my father a Marine for 30 years has a military marker thats metal. If fact there are hundreds of them in the cemetery where he is buried.

There is a metal yard called atlas metals it's always crowded it buys metals the place is on the west side of the street on Alameda st next to a shopping center south of tweedy street.

This has been going on for a while up at the Verdugo Hills cemetery-they sell the metal plates and buy drugs. This is what people do. Nothing unusual about it.

I had to pay $1200 dollars for my mother's headstone.I was scared they was putting more than one person in grave.Please do not steal headstone.Looks like no person is buried.
